To use MusicGPT, install the local app, start its chat-style web interface or generate a short clip from the command line, then refine your text prompt and save the result. MusicGPT currently uses MusicGen models; treat it as a way to make short prompt-based music samples, not as a verified vocal-song or full-track production tool.
Choose An Installation Path
MusicGPT runs locally and offers both a web UI and command-line workflow. The project provides installation paths for macOS, Linux and Windows. Choose the route that matches your comfort with setup:

- macOS or Linux: If you have Homebrew, install with
brew install gabotechs/taps/musicgpt. - Windows: Download and run the executable linked from the project page.
- Other setup: The project also documents precompiled binaries, Cargo installation and Docker. Docker is the recommended route in its instructions for using a CUDA-enabled GPU.
On first run, the app downloads model files and needs local storage for models, audio and metadata. Model choice affects hardware demands: the project warns that most models need powerful hardware. Start with the default model if you are unsure, and check the project instructions for current requirements and options.
Generate A First Music Sample
Use The Web Interface
- Open a terminal where MusicGPT is installed and run
musicgpt. - Open the local web interface it starts, then enter a natural-language description of the sound you want. For example:
Relaxing lo-fi instrumental with a soft beat, warm bass and mellow keys. - Play the generated sample in the interface. The UI keeps chat history, lets you replay samples and can generate in the background.
- Revise the prompt with one or two concrete changes at a time, such as asking for a lighter beat or fewer layers, and generate again.
The interface is chat-like, but the project does not establish particular genre controls, editing tools or guaranteed musical results. Phrase genre, mood and instrumentation as prompt requests, then judge what the generated sample actually contains.

Use The Command Line
- Run
musicgpt "Create a relaxing LoFi song"to generate and play a sample from the terminal. - For a longer sample, add
--secs 30. The default duration is 10 seconds; the documented maximum is 30 seconds. - To select a larger model, add
--model medium. The smallest model is selected by default, and larger models may demand more capable hardware. - Run
musicgpt --helpto see the available options in your installed version.
Write Prompts That Make The Sound Easier To Judge
A useful prompt describes a musical scene in terms you can listen for: style or mood, leading instruments, rhythmic feel and whether you want an instrumental. Keep the first request focused, then adjust the part that is missing or too prominent. These are example prompts, not controls or guaranteed outcomes:
- Quiet background bed:
Calm instrumental background music, gentle piano, soft sustained strings, slow pulse, restrained dynamics - Beat-led idea:
Lo-fi instrumental, relaxed drums, warm bass, mellow keyboard chords, understated texture - Bright retro direction:

MusicGPT’s documented examples include lo-fi and 80s pop prompts, but they do not establish that every genre, instrument, duration or arrangement request will work consistently. If you need a particular style or musical feature, try a short prompt and check the result rather than assuming it is supported.

Save And Manage Your Results
The app stores generated audio, downloaded models and supporting metadata locally. Its documented storage locations are under your user profile on Windows, macOS and Linux; consult the project page for the exact paths and platform-specific details. The project describes replay in the UI and terminal playback, but does not establish particular export formats or a dedicated editing workflow. Check the current project instructions before relying on a specific save or export option.

The application code is MIT-licensed, while its downloaded MusicGen model weights use CC-BY-NC-4.0. Those are separate licenses; the app’s open-source license does not remove the model weights’ noncommercial restriction. Review the current model terms before using generated audio, especially for commercial work. MusicGPT’s listed capabilities do not establish voice cloning or cover-song support, so do not assume permission to use a real person’s voice or someone else’s recording.

For U.S. copyright registration, the Copyright Office says applicants must disclose and describe their human contribution when a work contains more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material. It also says prompts alone do not make a person the author and that entirely AI-generated works are not copyrightable. Read the Copyright Office’s AI report and guidance.
