To separate vocals from a song, run the audio through a stem separator, select or download the vocal stem, then listen through it and export it for your intended use. The result is an estimate from a finished mix: instruments can bleed into the vocal, and parts of the voice can remain in the instrumental. Keep the original file so you can compare results or try another separator.

Separate The Vocal Step By Step
- Start with the source song. Use an audio file you are allowed to process. Keep a copy unchanged, and choose the highest-quality source you have; a compressed file cannot regain detail lost before separation.
- Check the file against the service’s limits. For example, Moises Free accepts files up to 5 minutes, BandLab Splitter uploads are limited to 15 minutes, and Stemelo signed-in uploads are limited to 15 minutes. Other size, duration, format, and plan limits are not established here, so check the vendor’s current site before uploading.
- Upload or open the song in the separator. In the tool, start a separation and select the vocal stem if the tool offers separate stem choices. BandLab’s free option separates vocals, bass, drums, and other instruments; Fadr separates vocals and several instrument stems. Tool labels and controls may differ.
- Preview the vocal and instrumental outputs. Listen to a quiet verse, a loud chorus, and any section where the singer overlaps strongly with instruments. Check whether the vocal is clear enough for your purpose and whether instrument sounds remain in it. Vocal separation is not a perfect undo of the original mix.
- Export the vocal stem. Use a format the tool offers and that your next app accepts. If format matters, check before processing: available exports vary, and not every tool’s format options are established here.
- Keep the instrumental stem if useful. A vocal-and-instrumental split can also give you a backing track for practice or a remix. Compare it with the original song so you can hear what the separation removed or left behind.

For Practice Or A Quick Vocal Reference
Try a browser tool such as VocaSplitter or Stemelo when you want a straightforward vocal stem without setting up desktop software. Stemelo also describes karaoke, instrumental, and drumless practice-track creation. Confirm that the available export and remaining free allowance suit your session.
For Editing Stems Or Continuing In A Music Workflow
BandLab Splitter exports audio or MIDI and can open separated stems in BandLab Studio. Fadr adds remix tools and MIDI, chord, key, and tempo detection; those are separate workflow features, so choose the vocal stem for the separation itself. Check each service for the specific controls and export options you need.

When The Vocal Stem Sounds Rough
- Try another separator on the same source; the tools can produce different estimates.
- Check the exposed and quiet parts separately. A split that sounds acceptable in a dense chorus may leave more backing sound in a quiet verse.
- If separation artifacts interfere with your goal, use the stem as a reference or practice aid rather than assuming it will work as a clean production vocal.
- Do not infer support for a particular genre, language, file format, or recording condition from a tool’s general stem-separation description. Check the vendor’s site for those specifics.

Use a song and voice you have permission to process, and check the selected platform’s terms for uploads, downloads, sharing, and your intended use. A separated vocal does not itself establish permission to publish or commercially use the performance.
