Overview

The service focuses on trust-account work: checking client balances, reconciling accounts and preparing paperwork for withdrawals and deposits. It supports three-way reconciliation and compliance reporting, making it a plausible fit for firms whose priority is trust accounting rather than a broader legal-practice system.

Account Legal runs in modern web browsers without installation or manual software updates, with access from computers and mobile devices. The maker describes SSL encryption for communications, redundant servers and three regular data backups daily. Its privacy policy says users retain rights to their data and that identifiable personal information is shared only for stated legal or safety reasons.

Key features

Monthly account statements support reconciliation, while individual balance reports serve quarterly checks. Users can set report date ranges, edit reports and produce printable PDF statements. That flexibility helps firms prepare records for a particular period, though editing reports also makes it important to follow the firm's own review procedures.

Selecting a client displays the current ledger balance before a check is written, connecting the balance check to a common trust-account transaction. The service prints withdrawal checks onto bank-purchased, pre-printed checks and includes the date, amount, payee, memo, amount in words and ledger. That is useful for firms that want transaction details on the check, but it depends on using the specified pre-printed stock.

Deposits can have printed receipts, and paperless use is supported. Alerts help identify possible discrepancies and negative client balances; they are prompts to investigate, not a replacement for reconciliation. Tutorials cover client ledgers, reconciliation, general journals, trust accounts, clients and alerts. Customer service is available at info@accountlegal.com, and online chat is for technical help using the service.

Pricing

There is no free plan, but a 30-day trial gives firms a chance to assess the workflows before paying. All three paid plans include unlimited access, multiple trust accounts, unlimited clients, downloadable client and account reports, and no setup or hidden fees. That makes the main choice the billing term rather than a change in features or capacity.

1 Month: 19.94 USD per month, billed monthly. It suits firms that want the shortest commitment, at the highest effective monthly cost of the three options.
6 Months Save 20%: 89.73 USD per once, billed semi-annually. The stated saving lowers the cost relative to monthly billing, in exchange for paying for six months at once.
12 Months Save 50%: 119.64 USD per once, billed annually. It has the lowest effective monthly cost, but requires the longest upfront commitment.

The terms allow the maker to disable or throttle file hosting if bandwidth exceeds 5 gigabytes per month or significantly exceeds other users' average usage. Firms expecting substantial file-hosting use should weigh that condition alongside the subscription price.

Platforms

Account Legal is a web service that runs in modern browsers and supports access from computers and mobile devices. The stated platform coverage includes web, Android, iOS, macOS and Windows, so it can serve teams using a mix of desktop and mobile devices without requiring an installation for browser use.

Who it's for

Private practices and larger law firms can consider Account Legal if their main need is trust-account management, particularly when they handle multiple accounts or many client ledgers. Its reporting, balance checks and check and receipt printing keep the focus on accounting operations. Firms seeking a wider set of practice-management capabilities should compare it with broader products rather than assume this focused tool covers them.

Pros and cons

Unlimited clients and multiple trust accounts across every paid plan: firms do not have to move to a more expensive tier as those counts grow.
Reports can be date-ranged, edited and exported as printable PDFs: this gives firms control over reporting periods and paper records.
Balances, alerts and transaction paperwork sit within the trust-account workflow: ledger checks before checks, plus deposit receipts, support routine recordkeeping.
File hosting can be throttled or disabled at the stated bandwidth thresholds: firms with heavier file use face a meaningful operational constraint.
The annual plan demands the longest advance payment: its lower effective cost is attractive only if a firm is comfortable committing for a year.

Alternatives

For a broader starting point, the Legal Accounting Software directory compares products in that category; the Legal Trust Accounting Software directory narrows the focus to trust accounting.

CosmoLex is worth comparing if a firm wants trust accounting alongside time tracking, invoicing and online payments; its Launch plan is 49.00 USD per month per user.

Tussman Program may suit a small practice seeking a free desktop option: its free version supports up to 5 clients and 10 matters, with a full program also offered at a price not listed. LexNebulis is a free, open-source, self-hosted alternative for readers seeking that deployment model.

Orion ePay, Dye & Durham Legal Accounts, LawPracticeZA and Actionstep are other paid alternatives.

Verdict

Choose Account Legal if your practice needs focused trust-account reporting, client balance checks and transaction paperwork, with multiple accounts and unlimited clients included in each paid plan. The annual option is the clearest price advantage for firms ready to commit, while the trial can help assess fit first. Look elsewhere if your work depends on heavy file hosting or you need a broader legal-practice suite.
