Overview

Aimeos combines broad commerce functions with support for headless frontends and multiple selling operations. Its strongest case is a project with specific business rules, multiple channels or vendors, or a large catalog: the trade-off is that it is a framework for developers, not a finished store with implementation bundled in.

Key features

The framework handles product variants, bundles, vouchers, downloads, events, subscriptions, recurring payments, and configurable goods. Multi-vendor, multi-channel, multi-warehouse, and multi-tenant support can bring several commerce operations into one installation. That breadth is useful for marketplaces and complex businesses, but likely unnecessary overhead for a straightforward shop.

A JSON:API REST API and GraphQL admin API support custom storefronts, progressive web apps, and mobile apps. Omnipay provides connections to more than 100 payment providers, including PayPal, Authorize.net, Mollie, and Stripe. Aimeos describes gateway-based payments as PCI compliant and cites reviewed code, SQL injection allowlists, and Content Security Policy support against cross-site scripting.

Database support includes MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and DB2. Standard MySQL supports up to 100,000 products out of the box; SOLR or Elasticsearch can take catalogs beyond one billion, with the gigacommerce extension. That gives large-catalog projects room to scale, but the higher figure depends on additional search technology rather than the standard setup.

Pricing

The Aimeos core is open source under LGPLv3 and free for commercial use, with no recurring license or transaction fees for self-run stores or client projects. The Core framework is also described as open source and free for commercial use, with no published price. This makes the software itself accessible to teams able to handle their own build and operation; it does not include implementation or custom development.

Paid support is separate. Extended long term support costs 99.00 USD per month, billed yearly with a 12-month minimum, and covers bug fixes and security updates for Aimeos LTS versions on Laravel, TYPO3, and Symfony. Basic support is 179.00 USD per month, billed yearly with a 12-month minimum, for email and direct developer support with a 24-business-hour response. Extended support is 379.00 USD per month, billed yearly with a 12-month minimum, adding telephone or video callback support and a 12-business-hour response. Premium support is 569.00 USD per month, billed yearly with a 12-month minimum, with remote web or SSH support and an 8-business-hour response. The subscriptions provide unlimited requests per developer per month; all support tiers exclude implementation and custom development.

For a bounded issue, the Professional support package costs 259.00 USD per once, plus VAT, for two hours of personal email and direct developer support, web or SSH support, and a 24-business-hour response. It avoids a subscription commitment but is limited to two hours. Subscription prices are stated with VAT additional.

Platforms

Aimeos is a PHP framework for Laravel and TYPO3, with API, Linux, self-hosted, and web platform support. Its REST and GraphQL APIs make it suitable for custom frontends, while database options include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and DB2. This range helps teams fit it to existing technical environments, but the self-run framework model calls for development and operational capacity.

Who it's for

Aimeos is best for developers, agencies, and enterprises building stores, marketplaces, or B2B platforms that need control over commerce logic, multi-tenancy, or catalog scale. It is a weaker fit for small teams seeking a managed storefront or hands-off implementation.

Pros and cons

Pro: The core is free for commercial use without recurring license or transaction fees, keeping software licensing costs low for self-run projects.
Pro: Broad product types, multi-tenant operation, and multi-vendor and multi-channel support suit complex commerce in one installation.
Pro: REST and GraphQL APIs, wide database support, and more than 100 payment-provider connections leave room for custom architecture.
Con: Aimeos is a framework rather than a ready-made hosted storefront, so teams need the capability to build and operate their solution.
Con: Support subscriptions require a 12-month minimum, and none of the support options includes implementation or custom development.
Con: Catalog scale beyond the standard MySQL limit relies on SOLR or Elasticsearch and the gigacommerce extension.

Alternatives

Bagisto is another free, self-hosted option; its stated requirements include PHP 8.3+, MySQL 8.0.32+ or MariaDB 10.3+, and at least 4 GB of RAM, making those concrete prerequisites useful to check against an existing environment.

Spree Commerce offers a free Community Edition and a price-unlisted Enterprise Edition; consider it when its DTC, B2B, and marketplace positioning is a closer match.

Crystallize has a free Particle plan capped at one tenant per project, 25 orders, 100 items, and 5 GB of bandwidth. Choose it when those defined allowances fit better than a self-run framework.

Commerce Layer offers a free Developer plan limited to one organization, two users, two markets, 1,000 SKUs, 10 links, and 100 free live orders per month; those caps help teams judge whether its plan fits a smaller deployment.

Elastic Path has no free plan and offers order-based paid tiers, with the Entry tier covering up to 15,000 orders per year. It may suit buyers comparing a paid option against Aimeos's free core.

Solidus has a free DIY Edition covering its entire platform and requiring users to bring their own infrastructure; it is another option for teams prepared to self-host.

Vendure offers an open-source GPLv3 core and a separate platform tier; compare it when that framework and licensing model better fits the project.

Sylius has an open-source Standard edition and a Sylius Plus plan priced at 800.00 EUR per year; consider it when that edition and price structure better suits the team.

Verdict

Choose Aimeos if your team can develop and run its own commerce platform and needs the flexibility of a free commercial-use core, extensive selling models, or multi-tenant and large-catalog support. Look elsewhere if you need a managed storefront or implementation included: Aimeos gives you the framework, while its paid support is a separate commitment.
