Overview

GIPHY Create turns images, video, and online media into short GIFs decorated with captions, stickers, and other edits. It is best suited to people making quick, shareable reactions from existing clips or images. Its free price is appealing, but the desktop workflow requires a GIPHY account and accepts only short, small video files.

Key features

Sources can be local files—JPG, PNG, GIF, MP4, MOV, or WebM—or media URLs from GIPHY, YouTube, Vimeo, and other sources. This flexibility is useful when a clip is already online, though users still need to keep desktop video under 100 MB and shorter than 15 seconds. The maximum GIF length is 15 seconds, so longer material must be cut down before it fits.

Editing includes cropping, captions, stickers, and layer adjustments; the sticker tool accepts JPG and PNG artwork. These tools cover basic customization without requiring a separate editor, but do not make this a fit for longer-form video work. GIPHY's mobile GIFMaker app can record GIFs and offers captions, effects, stickers, and trimming, making it a more natural option for capturing a moment on a phone than starting with a desktop video file.

Users can mark a GIF private during creation. Private GIFs are visible only to the signed-in user and cannot be shared, so this setting is for keeping a creation to oneself rather than private collaboration. For shareable work, GIPHY supports sending creations through social platforms, text message, and email.

GIPHY also offers an API and SDK for apps that want to integrate GIFs, stickers, or other GIPHY content. New API keys are beta keys limited to 100 searches or API calls per hour; production access requires an application and a pricing discussion. That makes it a starting point for evaluation, not an unrestricted production integration.

Pricing

GIPHY Create is free, with a free plan. The free offer makes sense for occasional personal GIFs and short clips; its practical trade-offs are the desktop account requirement and the video limits rather than a paid-tier quota. No additional paid creation plan is part of this offering.

Platforms

GIPHY Create is listed for web, Android, and iOS. Desktop GIF creation requires a signed-in GIPHY account. On mobile, GIFMaker can record directly and provides trimming and decorative tools, which favors phone-based capture over desktop video importing.

Who it's for

Choose GIPHY Create for short GIFs made from common image or video formats, online media, or a phone recording, especially when easy sharing matters more than advanced production controls. It is a poor fit for longer source footage, video files at or above 100 MB, or creations that must be shared privately: the desktop video ceiling is strict, and private creations cannot be shared.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad source options: Local image and video files sit alongside URLs from major video and GIF sources, avoiding a download step for some clips.
Useful basic edits: Captions, stickers, layers, and cropping cover common ways to personalize a short GIF.
Free creation and mobile capture: The free plan and phone recording option suit casual, spontaneous use.

Cons

Short desktop video allowance: Source videos must be under 100 MB and less than 15 seconds, limiting use with longer or larger footage.
Account required: Desktop GIF creation depends on signing in to GIPHY.
Private means unshareable: A private GIF is only visible to its logged-in creator, not collaborators.

Alternatives

FlexClip suits users who need a video-oriented workflow across desktop and mobile platforms; its free plan allows 12 online projects and videos up to 10 minutes, though it is not a free trial.

Gifox is the macOS-only alternative for screen recording; its Basic plan is described as 10-second screen recording, while Pro is a one-time 14.99 USD purchase with unlimited screen recording and removable watermark.

SSuite Gif Animator is a free option for users specifically seeking freeware on Windows or the web.

MakeAGIF may suit web users who want a stated 10 seconds of video time on its free account or 20 seconds with Premium Membership.

LICEcap is another free option for macOS and Windows users.

Piskel is a free alternative for users seeking Linux, macOS, web, or Windows support.

Verdict

GIPHY Create is a sensible pick for casual makers who want a free route from common files, online clips, or phone recordings to decorated, shareable GIFs. The combination of flexible inputs and straightforward editing is its main draw. Look elsewhere if your source video exceeds the desktop limits, you need to create without an account, or you need a private GIF that can still be shared.
