Overview

OFBiz brings accounting, CRM, order management, e-commerce, warehousing, inventory, manufacturing and MRP together. That range can reduce the need to connect separate departmental systems and gives an enterprise-wide operation a common data and process foundation. The product is intended for both business users and developers, with custom features possible as requirements evolve.

The underlying Java web framework supplies an entity engine, service engine and widget-based user interface. This makes OFBiz more adaptable than a fixed-purpose package, but it also makes technical ownership part of the buying decision. Teams wanting a hosted service with minimal infrastructure work should choose another ERP.

Key features

Commerce and order operations

Product and catalog management, promotion and pricing controls, supply-chain fulfillment, contracts, payments and billing cover the workflow from configuring an item to completing a sale. Payment gateway integrations and connected online and point-of-sale stores support physical, digital and configurable products. These capabilities suit businesses coordinating several sales channels, provided they can operate the underlying system themselves.

Finance and organizational control

The accounting module includes a general ledger, accounts receivable and payable, invoices, payments, statements, aging and financial reporting. Multi-entity support is important for organizations that need to manage more than one company or operating entity in a shared suite. The finance coverage is substantial enough to anchor an ERP deployment rather than serve merely as an add-on to commerce.

Inventory and manufacturing

Inventory and order management are complemented by bills of materials, production planning, material requirements planning, routings, job costing and raw-material procurement. That combination gives manufacturers a path from demand and purchasing through production costing and fulfillment. It is a stronger fit for operations with real manufacturing planning needs than for a small retailer seeking only stock counts and checkout.

Extensibility and security practice

Because OFBiz is framework-based, developers can extend its entities, services and interface rather than treating the standard modules as the boundary of the product. The project recommends staying on the latest stable release to reduce vulnerability exposure and provides PGP signatures and SHA512 hashes for release verification. Vulnerabilities should be reported privately to the security team, not through public trackers or mailing lists.

Pricing

Apache OFBiz is free. It is free and open-source, has no licensing fees and is self-hosted, so the purchase price does not include a managed environment or outsourced operations. This model fits organizations able to fund their own installation, administration, upgrades and support processes. It is less suitable when a predictable subscription must include hosting and operational assistance.

Platforms

OFBiz runs as self-hosted web software on Linux and Windows, with API access. The project documents local installation and operation on Unix-based and Windows-based systems. The framework and plugins trunk and release 24.09 require at least a Java 17 JDK, a material infrastructure requirement for teams standardizing on older Java versions.

Who it's for

OFBiz is aimed at developers and business users in organizations that want an enterprise-wide ERP adaptable to changing processes. It is particularly suitable for manufacturers and distributors needing finance, inventory, orders, commerce and production planning together, and for teams prepared to build extensions. Organizations without Java expertise, deployment capacity or appetite for ongoing release upkeep should prefer a managed alternative.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad operational coverage: Accounting, CRM, commerce, warehousing, inventory, manufacturing and MRP are delivered in one suite.
Manufacturing depth: Bills of materials, MRP, routings, job costing and procurement address production planning rather than just sales and stock.
Adaptable architecture: Java entity and service engines plus a widget interface give developers a basis for custom features.
No license fees: The free, open-source model removes per-seat software charges.

Cons

Self-hosting burden: Installation, infrastructure, backups, upgrades and day-to-day operation are not delegated to a vendor.
Java dependency: Java 17 JDK is required for the framework and plugins trunk and release 24.09.
Variable community support: Support for older release branches can decline when volunteers focus on other issues.

Alternatives

Verdict

Choose Apache OFBiz if you need a no-license-fee ERP spanning finance, commerce, inventory and manufacturing and have developers who can own a Java-based self-hosted deployment. Look elsewhere if hosted convenience, vendor-operated upgrades or a packaged support commitment matters more than extensibility and licensing savings.
