Overview

Auphonic is an automated post-production service for spoken-word audio and video, combining cleanup, multitrack mixing and production tools. It suits podcasters, broadcasters and other publishers with recurring recordings or workflows to automate. The breadth is compelling, but free-plan exclusions, a three-minute billing minimum and short media-retention periods deserve a close look.

Key features

Cleanup and mixing

Auphonic can reduce noise and reverb, level and filter audio, enhance recordings and meet loudness specifications. Automatic removal of filler words, coughs and silence can cut down on routine editing. For multitrack work, optimized mixdowns include automatic ducking, noise gates and mic-bleed removal—useful when a production uses separate microphones or sources, rather than only a single voice track.

Processing is batch-based, so the service is suited to preparing recordings and production runs, not a live-processing workflow. Billing is based on processed duration, with a three-minute minimum per production; a short clip can therefore consume more quota than its actual length.

Transcription, video and automation

Multilingual speech recognition supports transcripts, automatic shownotes and chapters, plus a shareable transcript editor. It uses a self-hosted multilingual Whisper model and external recognition services. Auphonic also supports common audio and video formats, waveform audiograms, metadata, chapters and burned-in styled subtitles.

Integrations include storage, publishing and automation services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3, YouTube, Libsyn, Zapier and n8n. A developer API, CLI, watch folders and batch productions make it a stronger fit for repeatable pipelines than for someone who only needs an occasional cleanup pass. The free CLI has static binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Pricing

Auphonic is freemium, with a free trial also offered. Auphonic Free is free and includes two hours per month, AI-based audio algorithms and a jingle in free productions. Credits do not stack. Free accounts can process multitrack productions under 20 minutes, but exclude multilingual speech recognition, automatic shownotes and chapters, watch folders and batch productions. That is a useful way to assess basic cleanup, but not a full test of the transcription or automation workflow.

The monthly-equivalent prices below apply when billed yearly, with yearly billing saving 20%:

Auphonic S: 11.00 USD per year for 9 hours per month.
Auphonic M: 25.00 USD per year for 21 hours per month.
Auphonic L: 52.00 USD per year for 45 hours per month.
Auphonic XL: 113.00 USD per year for 100 hours per month.

These tiers scale capacity for creators who can commit to yearly billing. For a larger monthly workload, Auphonic XXL costs 290.00 USD per month for 250 hours; credits reset monthly and unused credits do not roll over. Monthly and one-time plans include standard support, while yearly and business plans include priority support. No seat limits are given, so the plans can be compared here on processing capacity rather than team size.

Free plans include basic support. The three-minute minimum matters especially for short, frequent productions, while the free plan's non-stacking credits make it a poor fit for saving unused monthly capacity for a later production run.

Platforms

Auphonic is available on the web and through an API on Linux, macOS and Windows. Its free CLI runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. That combination supports both browser-based production and developer-led automation, though it is not a mobile-platform offering.

Who it's for

Auphonic makes the most sense for spoken-word producers who need consistent cleanup across episodes, interviews, lectures or broadcasts, especially when multitrack mixing, transcripts, chapters or automated delivery are part of the same workflow. High-volume users can choose a quota that matches their monthly processing needs. It is less suitable for a creator who needs only a quick one-off edit, relies on the free tier for transcription or watch-folder automation, or must retain production media beyond Auphonic's deletion windows.

Auphonic states that it complies with the EU General Data Protection Regulation worldwide and offers paying customers a Data Processing Agreement on request. Data is stored primarily on servers in Germany, with Cloudflare R2 used for media storage and delivery; EU users' media remains in EU jurisdiction. Audio and API productions are permanently deleted after 21 days, and video productions after 7 days. Those retention periods are worth factoring into any archive or review process.

Pros and cons

Pros: Cleanup, loudness control, automatic edits and multitrack mixdown tools cover several common post-production tasks in one service.
Pros: Speech, subtitles, publishing integrations and API or CLI automation can support a recurring production pipeline.
Pros: The free plan includes two hours monthly, and the CLI is free on Linux, macOS and Windows.
Cons: Free accounts cannot use multilingual speech recognition, automatic shownotes and chapters, watch folders or batch productions.
Cons: A three-minute minimum per production can weigh heavily on short clips, and unused XXL credits expire at the monthly reset.
Cons: Media is deleted after 21 days for audio and API productions and 7 days for video, so Auphonic should not be treated as long-term storage.

Alternatives

For dedicated speech enhancement, AI Speech Enhancement Software is a useful category to compare. For podcast-focused editing workflows, see AI Podcast Editing Software.

LALAL.AI has a free Starter tier with 10 minutes in a relaxed queue and 200 MB per-file uploads, but full downloads are unavailable there; consider it when those preview limits suit the task. Riverside Magic Audio has a free tier with a one-off two hours of multitrack recordings, up to 720p video and a Riverside watermark, making it an option when that recording allowance fits.

AudioEnhancerMAX is a free alternative. Krisp AI Meeting Assistant offers a seven-day free trial without a credit card. Adobe Enhance Speech has a free web plan limited to audio, one file at a time, with a daily enhancement cap. ai-coustics is a paid alternative with a Startup plan priced at 135.00 USD per month on an annual billing basis. Denoise offers mobile apps for Android and iOS, with saving and exporting reserved for Pro. LANDR ReHance is included with LANDR Studio, shown at 11.99 USD per month on annual plans.

Verdict

Choose Auphonic if you produce spoken-word audio regularly and want cleanup, multitrack mixing, transcription-related tools and automation in one workflow. Its strongest case is breadth paired with quota-based capacity. Look elsewhere if you need free access to the transcription and batch features, frequent short clips make the three-minute minimum costly, or you need media retained longer than Auphonic's deletion windows.
