Overview

Awesome Screenshot brings page capture, image markup, text recognition and screen recording into a tool that spans browser extensions, desktop apps, iPhone and web. It is best suited to people who need to capture and explain what is on screen, rather than a dedicated recorder or annotation app alone.

Its breadth is a strength, but the free tier puts meaningful ceilings on capture and recording, and the product’s capabilities vary by platform. The paid plans are most compelling when their higher quotas or recording quality match a regular workflow.

Key features

Capture, annotate and extract text

One-click capture can include an entire page, and scrolling capture handles content beyond the visible screen. Annotation tools make it possible to mark up screenshots before sharing or exporting them as PNG, JPG or PDF. OCR adds a practical way to extract text from images. Together, these features suit documentation, feedback and visual reference; the free plan’s limits on advanced annotation may constrain heavier editing needs.

Record and share

Video can show both the screen and camera, useful for walkthroughs where a speaker’s presence matters. The Mac product also records system audio and microphone. Sharing options include Facebook, Twitter and Gmail, while feedback can go through Google Drive, Trello, Slack or Asana. The homepage identifies Trello, Slack, Asana and Jira as connected tools.

The Windows desktop app can save recordings to AwesomeScreenshot.com Cloud or the local computer, and is described as having no watermark or ads. That local-save option is useful for people who do not want every recording kept in cloud storage, though the described storage choices are specific to the Windows app.

Pricing

Awesome Screenshot uses a freemium model. Free costs 0.00 USD per free, billed at $0 / month, and allows up to 100 screenshots, up to 20 recordings, recordings up to 6 hours, up to 720p and 3-day trash recovery. It is a reasonable starting tier, but the screenshot cap and limits on advanced annotation, advanced recording, editing and download durations make it less suitable for frequent or demanding work.

Basic costs 5.00 USD per month, billed $5/month billed annually or $6/month billed monthly. It removes the screenshot quota and extends trash recovery to 30 days, while retaining the free tier’s ceiling of 20 recordings, 6 hours per recording and 720p. Basic fits people who capture many images but do not need more recordings or higher resolution; it is a modest upgrade for video-heavy work.

Professional costs 6.00 USD per month, billed $6/month billed annually or $8/month billed monthly. It includes unlimited screenshots and recordings, up to 6 hours per recording, up to 4k and 30-day trash recovery. The step up from Basic is the clearest choice for regular recording or a need for higher-resolution output. The free and Basic plans both cap recordings at 20, while only Professional raises that quota and the resolution ceiling.

Platforms

Supported platforms are extension, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. Official browser extensions or add-ons are listed for Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Opera, Yandex and Vivaldi. An iPhone app is available. The Mac product’s system-audio and microphone recording, and the Windows app’s local or cloud saves, are platform-specific strengths worth weighing when choosing a workflow.

The privacy policy identifies Diigo Inc. and describes collection, use and disclosure of personal data to provide and improve the service. Its Data Processing Agreement states that it is intended to comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation. A Help/FAQ link and care@awesomescreenshot.com are provided for support.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for people who move between full-page screenshots, annotations, OCR and explanatory recordings, especially when browser coverage and multiple sharing routes matter. It is less suitable for users who need unlimited recording on a free or lower-cost tier, or whose work depends on consistent recording and storage behavior across every platform.

Pros and cons

Pros: Full-page and scrolling capture, annotation, OCR and common image exports cover a broad screenshot workflow in one product.
Pros: Screen-and-camera video, plus Mac audio recording, supports narrated demonstrations.
Pros: Professional raises the recording limit to unlimited and supports up to 4k, while retaining 30-day trash recovery.
Cons: Free limits users to 100 screenshots and 20 recordings, and caps video at 720p.
Cons: Basic still allows only 20 recordings and up to 720p, so frequent video users may need Professional.
Cons: Some described recording and storage capabilities are tied to particular desktop platforms rather than stated uniformly across the product.

Alternatives

For a narrower screenshot or recording workflow, the alternatives offer different trade-offs:

Monosnap is a freemium option with a free tier that includes one user, 2 GB storage, a 100 MB single-file upload limit and 5 minutes of video recording; consider it when those stated free-tier limits better match the job.
Screenpresso offers Windows image capture and HD video capture with branding on its free tier, alongside a limited image editor and branded sharing; it may suit a Windows user who accepts those branding limits.
Greenshot is a Windows free option for screenshot capture, annotation and editing, with export to files, clipboard, printer and email; choose it for a focused image workflow rather than Awesome Screenshot’s broader recording and platform mix.
ShareX is free, open source and Windows-only, with a free-forever offer and no account requirement; it suits readers who prioritize those terms.
Markup Hero has a free plan with 25 screenshots and history plus annotation, sharing and export; it is a fit for users whose image volume stays within that cap.
PicPick is a Windows option with screen capture, image editing and design tools on its Home plan for personal, non-commercial use; consider it when that scope fits.
Flameshot is free and open source on Linux, macOS and Windows; it is an alternative for readers seeking screenshot software across those desktop systems.
ScreenAI has a free tier with screen capture, annotation, OCR, color picking, quick redaction, PNG/JPEG/PDF export, native sharing and 10 AI requests per day; choose it when that stated toolkit is the closer match.

Verdict

Choose Awesome Screenshot if your work benefits from full-page capture, markup, OCR and screen-and-camera recording in one cross-platform product. Its main reason to buy is that breadth, while its main reason to look elsewhere is the free and Basic recording ceiling: both stop at 20 recordings and 720p, leaving Professional as the tier for unlimited recordings and up to 4k.
