Overview

Bandwidth supports two-way SMS, MMS, and inbound webhooks, with options spanning 10DLC, short code, toll-free, alphanumeric, and global mobile number texting. It says those options reach 120+ countries. That breadth suits businesses that need to choose routes for different campaigns or markets, but it also makes costs depend on message type and route rather than a single simple rate.

Registration Center can autofill customer and campaign data for Short Code and 10DLC. Traffic monitoring surfaces unregistered traffic and messages blocked by carriers or Bandwidth, with alerts by email or webhook. Those tools give operations teams useful signals when registrations or delivery need attention, though they do not replace the work of investigating alerts and fixing underlying issues.

Key features

New accounts default to an outbound testing limit of 1 message per second; A2P traffic can go up to the account limit. That is a deliberate constraint to plan around when validating high-volume workloads, so teams should understand their account limit before relying on production throughput.

If a webhook endpoint does not return an HTTP 2xx response, Bandwidth retries delivery multiple times over the next 24 hours, then stops. Integrations need to handle transient failures and recover events within that window rather than assume retries continue indefinitely.

Bandwidth says it does not store message text and retains only metadata for message queries after webhook delivery succeeds. It encrypts data in transit and at rest using protocols including TLS, SIPS, and SRTP; it lists SOC 2 Type II compliance and says eligible services meet HIPAA security requirements. Messaging customers receive Signature support, with optional Premium packages for on-call, ongoing assistance. The support package options give teams a way to add more assistance, but on-call help is an additional choice rather than the baseline.

Developer documentation includes integration guides for ServiceNow, Zendesk, and Salesforce, and SDK languages include Node.js, Python, Java, C#, PHP, and Ruby. That makes the API more practical for teams working in those ecosystems, while still leaving integration work with the customer.

Pricing

Bandwidth's overall pricing model is paid, with custom pricing on request and no free plan. A free trial is available. Published outbound charges vary by U.S. route and message format:

Route	SMS outbound	MMS outbound
U.S. 10DLC	0.00 USD per once (billed per message)	0.02 USD per once (billed per message)
U.S. Short code	0.01 USD per once (billed per message)	0.02 USD per once (billed per message)
U.S. Toll-free	0.01 USD per once (billed per message)	0.02 USD per once (billed per message)

The 10DLC SMS outbound rate is 0.00 USD per message, while short code and toll-free SMS cost 0.01 USD per message; all three listed MMS routes cost 0.02 USD per message. These are route-specific charges, not a monthly tier structure, so they help compare the listed U.S. outbound options but do not establish an overall budget for other routes or service needs. Custom pricing makes the service a better fit for organizations prepared to request a quote than for buyers who need a fully fixed public price upfront.

Platforms

The API runs on api and web platforms. SDK languages include Node.js, Python, Java, C#, PHP, and Ruby, giving development teams several common server-side choices for integration.

Who it's for

Bandwidth is aimed at companies that have outgrown a one-size-fits-all messaging provider and need global scale or high throughput. It is a stronger fit for teams that can plan around account limits, operate webhook-driven integrations, and make deliberate choices among messaging routes. A smaller buyer seeking a simple, fixed monthly plan or a published all-in price should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple SMS and MMS routes, two-way messaging, and reach across 120+ countries give larger teams room to shape deployments by market and use case.
Pros: Monitoring for unregistered and blocked traffic, plus email or webhook alerts, provides actionable operational visibility.
Pros: Message-content non-retention after successful webhook delivery and stated encryption and compliance commitments may suit teams with security requirements.
Cons: The default testing limit of 1 message per second is restrictive for load validation until the account limit is understood.
Cons: Webhook retries stop after 24 hours, so integrations need recovery handling for events that remain undelivered.
Cons: Custom pricing and route-dependent charges make budgeting less straightforward than a single fixed plan.

Alternatives

For a dedicated RCS option, compare RCS-Box, which has a free plan capped at 100 sessions per calendar month and paid plans beginning at 49.00 EUR per month. SimplyRCS offers a free pay-as-you-go option with a full builder and API, with messaging charged at published rates; it may suit teams seeking an RCS-focused entry point without a platform fee. Gupshup has a free plan and a 0.001 USD per-message standard fee, with WhatsApp fees billed at actuals, making it worth comparing where that fee structure fits the intended messaging mix. Orbit by Devotel offers pay-as-you-go pre-paid credits with no monthly fee or minimums and includes two team members, an option for buyers prioritizing that billing model.

For a carrier-rate-card RCS model, Google RCS for Business bases pricing on destination region and conversational or non-conversational billing category. smsmode RCS API starts at 9.00 EUR per month, excluding taxes, for 500 messages per month or more; it is an alternative for buyers who prefer a published monthly entry price. Sinch RCS for Business uses custom pricing, with carrier fees and setup costs potentially applying. Zenvia RCS for Business lists a Brazil RCS Basic channel pack at 0.08 BRL per contact, billed per message, for up to 24,213 sends with the USD 400 pack.

Verdict

Choose Bandwidth Messaging API if your company needs configurable SMS and MMS routes, operational monitoring, and an API that can support higher-throughput messaging. Its route choices and delivery visibility are the main reasons to choose it; the 1-message-per-second testing default, finite webhook retry window, and custom overall pricing are the main reasons to look elsewhere if your team needs straightforward capacity planning or predictable public pricing.
