Overview

Bifrost puts more than 20 AI providers behind one OpenAI-compatible API, so teams can manage model traffic through a shared gateway. It also handles MCP connections as both client and server, linking external tool servers and exposing their tools to clients such as Claude Desktop. That makes it useful for systems combining models and tools, not just applications making standalone LLM calls.

Weighted load balancing, retries, automatic provider failover, and semantic caching address availability and repeated requests. Virtual keys let operators set permissions, budgets, rate limits, and routing per consumer. Together, these controls suit shared infrastructure where teams need to govern traffic across applications; they are more operational machinery than a casual user needs.

Key features

Provider routing and reliability: The common API and routing controls centralize provider access. Retries and failover can help maintain request flow when a provider has trouble, while weighted balancing distributes traffic. Semantic caching can avoid repeating work for similar requests.
Governance: Virtual keys apply permissions, budgets, rate limits, and routing at the consumer level. This gives teams a way to separate usage across applications or users without managing every request as undifferentiated traffic.
MCP and SDK integration: Bifrost connects to external MCP servers and can expose tools to clients such as Claude Desktop. Documented SDK integrations cover OpenAI, Anthropic, Google GenAI, LiteLLM, and LangChain, making it relevant to teams already using those ecosystems.
Operations and security: Built-in request monitoring, Prometheus metrics, and OpenTelemetry tracing integrations support operational visibility. Security practices include Snyk dependency and code scanning, CodeQL analysis, Docker image scanning, and hardened non-root production containers.
Enterprise controls: SSO, role-based access control, audit logs, guardrails, vault integrations, and private VPC deployments are reserved for Enterprise. These matter to teams with production governance needs, but make the free edition a less complete fit for organizations that require those controls.

Pricing

Bifrost uses a freemium model, with a free plan and a 14-day Enterprise trial. The OSS plan is free, billed free forever. It is self-hosted and available through NPX, Docker, Kubernetes, or a Go binary, under Apache 2.0. Developers and small teams comfortable operating their own deployment get the core gateway without a recurring license price; in return, they take on self-management and receive documentation, community, and self-management support.

Enterprise has custom pricing and is intended for production deployments. The 14-day free trial applies to an Enterprise license. Its SSO, role-based access, audit logs, guardrails, vault integrations, private VPC deployments, and SLA-backed support with direct engineer access make it the relevant tier for production teams that need those assurances. The cost is not a published fixed amount, so teams should assess it against their specific production requirements.

Platforms

Bifrost supports API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows environments, as well as self-hosted deployment. It can run as an HTTP API gateway through NPX or Docker; Kubernetes and a Go binary are also self-hosting options. This flexibility suits teams choosing their own deployment environment, but the OSS plan places operation of that environment on the team.

Who it's for

OSS is the natural starting point for developers and small teams that want a self-managed gateway for multiple providers, MCP tools, and per-consumer budgets or routing. Enterprise is aimed at teams running AI systems in production at scale, particularly where access governance, auditability, private deployment, or SLA-backed support is required. Bifrost is less suitable for buyers seeking a hosted, hands-off service or a simple model catalog.

Pros and cons

Pro: One OpenAI-compatible API spans 20+ providers, reducing the need to route model traffic through separate gateway integrations.
Pro: Failover, retries, weighted balancing, and semantic caching combine reliability and request-efficiency controls in the same gateway.
Pro: Virtual keys provide practical per-consumer governance through permissions, budgets, rate limits, and routing.
Con: OSS is self-hosted and self-managed, so teams must operate the deployment rather than rely on a hosted service.
Con: SSO, role-based access, audit logs, guardrails, vault integrations, private VPC deployments, and SLA-backed support require Enterprise, whose pricing is custom.

Alternatives

LLM Gateway Software is the broader category for comparing gateway options. Consider Kong Gateway if its free trial terms—30 days, no credit card required, no Gateway limits, and 30 days of analytics retention—fit your evaluation. YoloRouter is another freemium self-hosted option, with a single binary, SQLite out of the box, and optional PostgreSQL.

Requesty may suit teams looking for a free hosted option with access to free models, 200 requests per day, routing, caching, fallbacks, spend tracking, analytics, and EU data residency. TrueFoundry AI Gateway is worth considering when a bounded developer plan is useful: its free tier allows up to 3 users, 10k requests per user per month, 5 model accounts, and 5 MCP servers. Helicone is an alternative if an open-source offering and contributor community are priorities.

LiteLLM is a close fit for self-hosting teams seeking broad provider support: its free open-source plan includes 100+ providers, virtual keys, users and teams, spend tracking, budgets, and rate limits. Routerly offers a free self-hosted plan with no markup on API calls. Vercel is a broader platform alternative with a free Hobby plan for personal, non-commercial use.

Verdict

Choose Bifrost if your team wants a self-hosted control plane that brings provider routing, MCP tools, and per-consumer controls together. The OSS plan gives developers and small teams a free way to run that gateway, while Enterprise adds the governance and support suited to production at scale. Look elsewhere if you need a hands-off hosted service or cannot justify custom Enterprise pricing for the controls you require.
