Overview

Buddi centers on a simple cycle: set up accounts and categories, record transactions, then review spending habits. That focus is useful for keeping everyday finances organized, but readers seeking a wider set of financial tools should look elsewhere.

The project dates to 2010 and is licensed under GNU General Public License version 2.0 (GPLv2). Its latest listed version is Buddi-3.4.1.14, with stable files dated 2019-04-03. The project lists Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, and Swedish.

Key features

The project wiki documents a main budget window and a reports window, with a net worth graph and income pie graph. These views give users several ways to inspect a budget, though the core remains account, category, and transaction tracking rather than an expansive financial-management system.

A separate Buddi Plugins project lists CSV and QIF import and export plugins. Older .buddi files need the Import Legacy Buddi Data plugin rather than the default .buddi3 format. Older plugins may also need an updated version or recompilation after a Buddi version change, so users relying on imported data or extensions should check compatibility before committing.

Buddi Live is described as an online option accessible from mobile devices. Phones can be difficult to use with it, while tablets work better; that makes it a less compelling choice for phone-first budgeting.

Pricing

Buddi is free, with a free plan at 0.00 USD per free under the GPLv2 license. There is no free trial because the core plan is already free. This suits budget-conscious users who need its basic budgeting workflow, without a paid tier to unlock the described core functions.

Platforms

Buddi supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its desktop availability across these systems makes it a practical option for users choosing among the three, while Buddi Live offers an online route for mobile access, with tablets the better fit than phones.

Who it's for

Buddi is best for individuals who want to track household accounts, categorize spending, and review budget patterns without specialist financial knowledge. SourceForge also identifies desktop end users and the financial and insurance industry as intended audiences, but its described workflow is most directly suited to basic budgeting needs. Users with older data should allow for the legacy import plugin, and users dependent on extensions should consider the plugin compatibility caveat.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free GPLv2 software covers account, category, and transaction tracking, with budget and report views for reviewing spending.
Pros: CSV and QIF import and export plugins provide routes for moving data in and out.
Cons: Stable files date to 2019, so the release history may be a concern for users who prioritize more recent software.
Cons: Older data uses a separate legacy import plugin, and older plugins may require updates or recompilation after a version change.
Cons: Buddi Live is less comfortable on phones than tablets, limiting its appeal for mobile-first users.

Alternatives

For another free budgeting option, Buddi's focused account-and-transaction workflow may remain the better fit if that is all you need. Readers comparing audio tools can instead consider Nahimic, a free option for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows whose download page identifies compatible computers and versions and requires an audio driver update first; DeskFX Audio Enhancer, which has a free version and supports macOS and Windows; or PC Equalizer, which has a free demo and a lifetime license for 3 PCs priced at 201700.00 USD per once.

Other alternatives include SotF, free open-source software under GPL-3.0 with no subscription for Linux, macOS, and Windows; CamillaDSP, a free option spanning API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows; and SteelSeries Moments, a free option for Windows.

Mac users can also consider EQBase, which has a no-time-limit free plan with core features listed, or eqMac, whose free plan includes community support and excludes Pro features. Verdict

Choose Buddi if you want a free, focused way to manage accounts, categories, and transactions across Linux, macOS, or Windows. Its straightforward budgeting scope is the main reason to choose it; the 2019 stable files and plugin compatibility issues are reasons to look elsewhere if current releases or dependable extension compatibility matter more.
