Overview

Clickatell SMS API is a business messaging service for sending and receiving SMS through an API or web app. It is strongest for organizations that need replies, international delivery, or a path to combine SMS and WhatsApp. Its broad reach and free testing sandbox are practical advantages; variable, destination-based message charges make budgeting less straightforward.

Key features

Teams can use a basic HTTP API or the REST-based One API. One API handles SMS and WhatsApp without separate channel programming, which suits businesses building across both channels. Inbound webhooks, short codes and long numbers support two-way SMS; U.S. 10DLC numbers are available for application-to-person messaging.

Clickatell says its infrastructure reaches more than 220 territories and 1,000 mobile networks, selecting the highest-quality routes available for each message. That breadth is useful for businesses communicating across markets, but does not make delivery costs uniform. The cloud web interface adds reporting dashboards, role-based access control and an unlimited free sandbox for testing.

Shared inboxes, templates, media messaging, interactive menus, workflow automation and AI responses make the platform relevant to customer support and promotions as well as notifications. Clickatell says conversations are private with default end-to-end encryption.

Pricing

The Prepaid package costs 0.00 USD per free and charges pay-as-you-go for outgoing messages. It is the clearest fit for teams that want to start without a subscription commitment, but message costs vary by destination and type. Clickatell directs customers to an estimator to determine applicable rates.

Connect is an enterprise SMS package for API and web app use, with custom pricing. It includes standard support and a 99.98% uptime SLA, making it the more relevant option for organizations that need a defined service commitment. Its compliance credentials include ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR, CCPA and POPIA.

Clickatell offers free account registration and unlimited free sandbox testing, but the sandbox is for testing rather than a stated allowance of free production messages. The product is also marked as having a free trial; no trial length is stated. A separate paid-from figure of 125 /mo is shown, but without a named plan or term it is not a sound basis for estimating a customer's bill.

Platforms

Clickatell supports API and web access. The API choice ranges from basic HTTP to REST-based One API, while the web interface provides reporting and role-based access control. No mobile or desktop app platform is specified.

Who it's for

Clickatell is a good fit for businesses that need two-way SMS, international reach, or a shared API approach to SMS and WhatsApp, particularly when developers and web-based operators both need access. It is less suitable for buyers who need predictable per-message costs before choosing a destination or a clearly defined, low-cost production allowance.

Pros and cons

Broad international coverage: stated reach across more than 220 territories and 1,000 networks supports cross-market messaging.
Useful testing and channel flexibility: the unlimited free sandbox and SMS-plus-WhatsApp One API let teams explore integrations before committing to message spend.
Production costs vary: destination and message type affect charges, so the pay-as-you-go package does not offer one predictable rate.
Enterprise service commitment: Connect pairs standard support with a 99.98% uptime SLA, but uses custom pricing.

Alternatives

For broader customer support software with a permanent free tier, Crisp offers a free plan with two seats, 100 customer profiles and unlimited conversations, though it has no AI credits. Boei may suit a buyer seeking a low-priced chatbot entry point: its Starter plan is 19.00 USD per year, billed at $228/yr, and includes one domain and one chatbot. For an API-and-web chatbot with a fixed free allowance, ConvoCore has 500 monthly credits (about 182 estimated messages) on its free plan.

Jack The Butler is a free, open-source option; hosting and AI API usage may cost extra. Sinch Engage offers SMS plans with stated monthly message quotas and user limits. Evoriqa SMS AI Chatbot has a free plan capped at 50 messages a month and one chatbot. Bryka has a free plan with one chatbot and 50 messages a month. Smstools is worth considering for per-message U.S. pricing: its listed U.S.A. messaging rate starts at €0.025 per message, with volume discounts and no subscription.

Browse SMS chatbot software for more conversation-focused options, WhatsApp Business API providers for WhatsApp-first needs, transactional SMS software for notification use cases, or SMS gateway software for other API-based messaging services.

Verdict

Choose Clickatell when two-way messaging, international network reach and SMS-plus-WhatsApp API access matter more than a fixed message rate. The free sandbox makes integration evaluation easier, while Connect adds a stated uptime SLA for enterprise use. Look elsewhere if a predictable production cost or a clearly sized free messaging allowance is essential.
