Overview

uniCenta oPOS is open-source point-of-sale software for retailers, hospitality businesses and mixed-use venues. It is best suited to operators who want broad till and stock functions and can manage a self-hosted installation or justify an annual subscription for support or cloud hosting. Its free GPL3 version is a strong starting point, but the paid tiers differ most in support, API access and hosting.

Checkout covers barcode scanning, customizable receipts, multiple payment methods and terminals, and secure staff logon. Retail and restaurant modes, table management, split receipts, refunds and discounts extend it beyond a basic till. Stock management, multi-warehouse and multi-store functions, sales reporting, employee permissions and multi-location support make it relevant to businesses coordinating more than one venue.

The maker also describes integrated EMV/PCI card payments in the UK, EU and USA, and WooCommerce connections that can retrieve customers, orders and products for workflows such as table ordering and click-and-collect. Customer, order and product APIs support synchronization with other applications. This breadth is useful for mixed operations, though hardware support is third-party rather than a single bundled hardware offering.

Key features

Retail and hospitality checkout: Barcode scanning, multiple payment methods and terminals, customizable receipts, refunds and discounts address varied transaction flows. Restaurant mode and table management make it a more natural fit for venues with seated service than a retail-only till.
Stock and locations: Inventory management, multi-warehouse and multi-store functions support businesses tracking stock across sites, while sales reports and employee permissions add oversight.
Integrations: WooCommerce connectivity and customer, order and product APIs give operators routes to synchronize commerce data. Unlimited API access is reserved for PLUS and HOSTED; BASE includes API access but not unlimited access.
Devices and hosting: Installers are offered for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The maker also describes browser use on Android and iOS devices. HOSTED adds cloud hosting, HTTPS, daily backups, a built-in firewall and automatic upgrades, reducing the work of running the system yourself.
Support model: Community forums are free but unsupported. Subscribers receive online support and knowledge-base access, with plan-specific differences in forum priority and email support.

Pricing

Version 5.0 is free to download under GNU GPL3. The subscriptions are billed annually, despite monthly-equivalent prices: BASE costs 72.00 GBP per year (£6 per month charged yearly), PLUS costs 144.00 GBP per year (£12 per month charged yearly), and HOSTED costs 180.00 GBP per year (£15 per month charged yearly). No seat or usage caps are stated for these plans.

BASE: Downloads and source code, update notifications, web reporting, standard forum support, user and developer guides, and API access. At 72.00 GBP per year, it suits operators comfortable with community-level help who want a modest step up from the free download. It gives up PLUS's priority forum support, limited developer support and unlimited API access.
PLUS: Includes BASE's core downloads, notifications, reporting and guides, with priority forum support, limited developer support and unlimited API access. At 144.00 GBP per year, it is the better fit for businesses integrating uniCenta with other systems or needing faster forum attention. It does not include HOSTED's cloud hosting, daily backups, firewall, automatic upgrades or email support.
HOSTED: At 180.00 GBP per year, it includes everything on PLUS plus cloud hosting, a custom HTTPS URL, daily backups, built-in web firewall, automatic upgrades and email support; it runs on iPad, Android tablets and most browsers. It is the clearest choice for operators who prefer a managed cloud setup over maintaining their own installation.

The software continues working after a subscription expires, so renewal affects subscription services rather than stopping the till. Remote Order Display is in beta and available to PLUS subscribers.

Platforms

uniCenta lists Windows, Linux and Mac OS X installers, alongside browser access on Android and iOS devices. The platform range is broad, but the distinction matters: HOSTED explicitly includes cloud use on iPad, Android tablets and most browsers, while downloadable use is suited to operators prepared to run their own installation.

Who it's for

Consider uniCenta oPOS if your retail or hospitality operation needs more than checkout: stock across stores or warehouses, restaurant workflows, reporting and staff permissions are all part of its scope. It also fits businesses that value open-source software and can choose between a free download, paid support/API access and managed hosting.

Look elsewhere if you need first-party hardware support as part of the product, or if you want a plan whose published terms spell out seat or transaction quotas. The product's breadth also makes it less compelling for a small operation seeking only a simple till.

Pros and cons

Pros: A free GPL3 download provides a substantial retail and hospitality feature set, including inventory and multi-location tools.
Pros: Annual tiers make the trade-off explicit: priority support and unlimited API access come with PLUS, while HOSTED adds backups, security and automatic upgrades.
Cons: Hardware support is third-party, so buyers should not assume a bundled or maker-provided hardware solution.
Cons: Free community forums are unsupported; operators needing stronger assistance must pay for a subscription.

Alternatives

Loyverse is worth comparing if you want a freemium POS with Android, iOS and web platforms; its free POS plan has a 31-day sales-history limit, while unlimited sales history costs 5.00 USD per month per store or 50.00 USD per year.

RetailPOS is a free, open-source alternative with self-hosted support and no monthly fees, for buyers who prioritize that cost model.

Open Source Point of Sale is another free option for Linux, macOS, web and self-hosted use, though its footer signature must remain visible on every page.

eHopper is an alternative with a free plan and monthly paid tiers, including Essential Plus at 14.99 USD per month and Freedom at 24.99 USD per month.

Erply is a paid alternative for buyers willing to consider a Growth Plan at 1000.00 USD per month, with three stores, 100,000 monthly queries and unlimited users.

PHP Point of Sale is a paid alternative with a 29.00 USD per month Shopify syncing app and a free trial.

Posnic POS offers a free Community Edition and publishes its desktop source under AGPL-3.0-only.

GoFrugal Retail is a paid alternative with Starter, Standard and Professional plans.

Verdict

uniCenta oPOS is a strong choice for retailers and hospitality operators who need stock, venue and multi-location functions alongside checkout, and want open-source software with optional paid support or hosting. Its main advantage is the range available from a free download; its main reason to look elsewhere is third-party hardware support or a preference for simpler, more clearly bounded service terms.
