Overview

CoinTracking combines portfolio tracking with tax preparation across more than 100 countries. Its output formats include IRS Form 8949 and Schedule D, HMRC and ATO reports, and German formats such as DATEV, Elster and BMF. That range suits investors who need a report aligned with their jurisdiction; the breadth is less valuable to someone who only wants to monitor holdings.

Imports cover more than 400 exchanges, wallets and blockchains, using API, CSV files or blockchain addresses. Automatic categorization recognizes DeFi swaps, staking rewards, NFT trades and margin positions, reducing the amount of varied activity that must be sorted manually. The 200-transaction Starter ceiling, however, will constrain some investors even when their sources are supported.

Key features

Analysis and categorization

More than 25 customizable reports, interactive charts and profit-and-loss reports provide several ways to examine a portfolio and its transaction history. DeFi and NFT support, together with automatic categorization, makes the service better suited to mixed crypto activity than a tracker focused only on straightforward holdings.

Tools, security and support

AI Tax Saver, a CSV File Converter and Source of Funds add specialist tools, though access varies by plan and country. CoinTracking says it holds ISO/IEC 27001:2017 certification, stores data on servers in Germany, encrypts it at rest and in transit, and handles it under GDPR. Its exchange connections use read-only API keys that cannot trade or withdraw funds, a useful safeguard for people linking exchange accounts.

iOS and Android apps sync with an existing account. Tutorials, support and a directory of tax professionals extend the service beyond self-service reporting; the directory includes 504 CPAs across 95 countries. That may help users seeking professional assistance, though it is not a substitute for checking that a particular professional serves their needs.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is limited to portfolio viewing. It includes a 7-day trial with unlimited imports and requires no credit card, making it a low-friction way to explore importing before choosing a paid tier, but not a lasting tax-reporting option.

Starter: 49.00 USD per year, billed $49 /year. It allows 200 transactions and includes 25+ reports, access to 400+ exchanges and wallets, and two backups. It is the entry point for users with modest histories who need paid features, but the transaction cap is restrictive for larger records.
Pro: 169.00 USD per year, billed $169 /year. The 3,500-transaction allowance, auto-sync, API access and five backups make it a more plausible fit for active investors who want connections to update automatically.
Expert: 259.00 USD per year, billed $259 /year. It adds a selectable transaction limit, priority support, auto-sync, API access and ten backups. This suits users who need more control over capacity or faster support, though the chosen limit matters.
Unlimited: 899.00 USD per year, billed $899 /year. Unlimited transactions, advanced tools, an expert session and 20 backups target high-volume users who have outgrown capped plans; the substantial price is hard to justify for a small portfolio.

Corporate pricing includes three unlimited accounts, multi-client management, individual branding and features for CPAs, accountants and financial professionals. It is aimed at client-service work rather than personal tracking; pricing is custom pricing.

Platforms

CoinTracking runs on the web and offers iOS and Android apps that sync with an existing account. An API platform is also supported. The mobile apps extend access to the same account, while the web service remains the core place to manage portfolio and tax activity.

Who it's for

CoinTracking is best for crypto investors who need to consolidate records from many sources, account for activity such as staking or NFTs, and produce jurisdiction-specific reports. Its higher tiers also suit professionals managing multiple client accounts. A casual holder who only wants to view a portfolio may find the free plan sufficient, while investors with more than 200 transactions should look beyond Starter.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 400 import sources and API, CSV and address-based imports help consolidate activity spread across platforms.
Pro: Reports for 100+ countries and formats including IRS, HMRC, ATO and German tax outputs address varied filing needs.
Pro: Read-only exchange keys prevent connected accounts from trading or withdrawing through CoinTracking.
Con: The free plan is view-only, so users seeking tax reports need a paid plan.
Con: Starter's 200-transaction allowance can be inadequate for investors with a long or active trading history.
Con: Tools vary by plan and country, so access to AI Tax Saver, the converter or Source of Funds may not be uniform.

Alternatives

Koinly is worth considering if a large free transaction allowance matters most: its free plan includes 10,000 transactions, unlimited wallets and exchange accounts, portfolio tracking and capital-gains previews. CoinTracking instead emphasizes its broad import coverage and reporting formats.

Coinpanda may suit someone comparing a lower-cost entry point for limited activity: its free plan covers 25 transactions per tax year, while the Hodler plan is 79.00 USD per year for 100 transactions. CoinTracking's Starter allowance is 200 transactions, at a lower annual price.

rotki is an alternative for users who want desktop or self-hosted platforms; its free plan allows 1,000 recent events and 10 user notes. Choose between them based on whether those platforms and event limits fit better than CoinTracking's reporting-focused offering.

Bitcoin.Tax may appeal to users whose activity fits within its smaller free allowance: up to 20 trading transactions with standard features and community support. CoinTracking's free tier does not provide tax reporting, but its paid Starter plan allows 200 transactions.

CoinLedger is an option for free portfolio tracking, with unlimited exchanges and wallets, 20,000+ cryptocurrencies and unlimited revisions in its Portfolio Tracking plan. Its web-only platform may be a narrower fit than CoinTracking for people who want mobile apps and broad tax-format support.

ZenLedger offers free tax reports and a Silver plan at 49.00 USD per year for up to 100 transactions, including DeFi, staking and margin trading. It may be preferable if free reporting is the priority; CoinTracking's entry paid tier covers twice as many transactions.

Ledgible is another freemium option, with a Professional Tax starting price of 49.00 USD per contact.

Recap offers a Basic plan for 119.00 GBP per year with up to 5,000 transactions, tax reports and accountant sharing, making it a candidate for users who want that larger stated allowance and collaboration feature.

Verdict

Choose CoinTracking if you need to bring varied crypto activity together and want portfolio analysis alongside tax reports tailored to your jurisdiction. Its import coverage and reporting breadth are the strongest reasons to pick it; the view-only free tier and Starter's 200-transaction cap are the clearest reasons to look elsewhere or budget for a higher plan.
