Overview

Collisions Higher Education is a set of chemistry games for introductory and general college courses. It suits US college instructors who want concept-focused practice tied to class enrollment; the combination of guided challenges and instructor reporting is useful, but student access costs money and the maker no longer offers direct support.

Key features

Coverage spans more than 55 core chemistry concepts across eight areas: radii trends, ionization energy, acid strength, Lewis structures, ionic bonding, energy in phase change, LeChâtelier, and intermolecular forces. That range gives instructors material to use at several points in introductory or general chemistry, though the activities remain organized around these specific topics.

Each game offers leveled challenges as well as an exploratory sandbox. The two modes make room for both directed practice and less prescribed exploration. Molecular modeling and reaction simulation further support chemistry learning activities, while the teacher dashboard reports student progress and performance. Content overviews, quick-start guides, formative assessments, and extension assignments help instructors incorporate the games into teaching rather than rely on them as a complete course.

Students join through an instructor-provided unique invitation URL, and their accounts are linked to a class. This supports instructor-managed use, but makes Collisions HE a poor fit for students seeking independent access. Student accounts are deleted each July 1; instructor accounts unused for 12 months are also deleted. Stored passwords are encrypted, and session IP addresses are automatically removed daily.

Pricing

Instructor access is free for US-based college and university educators. Student subscriptions cost 15.00 USD per year, billed as a 12-month subscription; the stated normal price is $20.00. The student plan is tied to an instructor’s class, so the free instructor tier does not make the service free for students.

Access is currently limited to US-based college and university educators and students. Playmada has ceased operations; Collisions HE remains available and free to educators and students as of July 1, 2022, but the FAQ says email, phone, and training support have ended. Users are directed to a support forum. That makes the free instructor access more attractive to teachers able to work without maker support, and less suitable where responsive assistance is important.

Platforms

Collisions HE supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows, giving students and instructors options across mobile and desktop platforms.

Who it's for

This is a sensible choice for US college and university instructors who can organize class enrollment, want games for defined chemistry concepts, and value progress and performance reporting alongside teaching resources. It is less suitable for students wanting to enroll on their own, users outside the United States, or programs that need ongoing support from the maker.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 55 concepts, eight topic areas, leveled practice, and an exploratory sandbox give instructors varied ways to reinforce chemistry content.
Pros: A teacher dashboard and prepared formative and extension resources support classroom use beyond the games themselves.
Cons: Students pay 15.00 USD per year and must join through an instructor’s invitation URL.
Cons: Accounts are subject to deletion rules, and the maker no longer provides email, phone, or training support.
Cons: Availability is restricted to US-based college and university educators and students.

Alternatives

Chemistry Simulation Software is a useful starting point for comparing other chemistry tools.

Beyond Labz may suit instructors who want free access to teach, preview, and build assignments, with a separate Chemistry plan billed as a one-time payment. Interactive Chemistry offers free web-based games and simulations; its maker says users can finish the prototype code themselves. PhET Interactive Simulations is worth considering for free, open-source simulations available online or by download.

ChemLab is a paid alternative with a free trial. PraxiLabs has a free plan limited to one month and three simulations, alongside paid options. VR Chemistry Lab has a free demo limited to one device and several tasks. ChemCollective Virtual Lab is free for educators and students to install, use, and distribute. Vic’s Science Studio is another option to compare.

Verdict

Choose Collisions HE if you teach introductory or general chemistry at a US college and want focused game-based practice with instructor reporting and teaching resources. Its strongest case is the combination of broad concept coverage and classroom-oriented tools. Look elsewhere if students need independent enrollment, if paid student access is a barrier, or if your program depends on direct support from the maker.
