Overview

Colorize’s core job is straightforward: bring color to monochrome photographs and videos on Android and iOS. The app is part of Photomyne’s Scanning Suite, which also includes Photo Scan, SlideScan and FilmBox, so it fits a broader effort to preserve prints, slides and negatives rather than serving as a general photo editor.

The experience is most appealing when you want a direct mobile workflow. On Android, you can scan or upload a black-and-white photo and apply color with one tap. That simplicity favors occasional restoration and family-archive projects, but the free allowance is too small for sustained batch work.

Key features

One-tap colorization

Android users can scan or upload a black-and-white image and colorize it with a single tap. Colorize also handles videos, although the documented one-tap workflow specifically describes photos. The app lets you save or share results; membership removes limits on saving and sharing, which matters when restored images are going into an archive or being sent to relatives.

Backup and access

Paid access includes photo backup and access on other devices and online. That turns Colorize from a phone-only experiment into a more practical preservation tool for people who switch devices or want an online copy. Photomyne Apps can upload materials you select to Google Photos after permission is granted, without access to other existing Google Photos content.

Data and privacy

Google Play says data is encrypted in transit and that users can request deletion. It also says the app may share device or other IDs and may collect personal information, messages and five other data types. Photomyne says generative AI may process biometric data for selected features with consent, and says it does not use biometric data to identify a person. Its personal-information servers are hosted by AWS in the United States and Europe, including Ireland; deidentified or aggregated information is hosted by Google Cloud Platform. Privacy-sensitive users should consider those practices before uploading a large family archive. Product support is available at support@photomyne.com.

Pricing

Colorize Basic is free and provides a limited number of black-and-white photo colorizations; the Android listing describes the first few photos as free. It is suitable for checking whether the workflow meets your needs, not for regular restoration.

The Yearly membership costs 59.99 USD per year after a billed 3-day free trial. It auto-renews until canceled and includes unlimited black-and-white colorization, unlimited saving and sharing, photo backup, and access on other devices and online. This is the clearest fit for anyone processing a sizable collection, provided you are comfortable with annual renewal.

The Monthly membership has custom pricing and renews monthly. It includes the same unlimited colorization, saving and sharing, backup, and cross-device online access as the yearly plan. Choose it when you need those benefits for a shorter or more flexible commitment; the annual price is the only published paid rate.

The One-Time plan also has custom pricing: a single upfront payment buys unlimited premium access valid for two years. It avoids recurring billing, but its value depends on the undisclosed price and on whether two years suits your project timeline.

Platforms

Colorize runs on Android and iOS. The documented scan, upload and one-tap workflow comes from the Android app; the service is nevertheless positioned as a mobile product on both platforms.

Who it's for

Choose Colorize if you are preserving family photographs and want a phone-first process with optional backup and online access. The free plan works for a small trial. A membership makes more sense for a collection, frequent sharing, or people who need restored images available across devices. It is a weaker fit if you need a broad desktop editing environment, transparent pricing for every plan, or a large free quota.

Pros and cons

Pros

Single-tap photo colorization keeps occasional restoration quick.
Paid plans combine unlimited colorization with unlimited saving and sharing.
Backup and access on other devices and online support an ongoing family archive.
Membership sits within a wider Photomyne scanning suite for prints, slides and film.

Cons

The free plan permits only a limited number of photo colorizations, so it is not a durable free solution.
The yearly membership auto-renews after a 3-day trial, requiring cancellation to stop billing.
Monthly and one-time prices are custom, making those options harder to compare before purchase.
Collection and sharing decisions require weighing the stated data collection, identifier sharing and consent-based biometric processing.

Alternatives

Pick Cutout.Pro instead if you need Android, iOS, desktop, Linux, web or API access and a credit-based subscription model. PicWish Photo Colorizer suits users wanting browser access and free online colorizing and downloads, including bulk editing up to 30 images. ImageColorizer offers 50 free credits per month across Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows, but its free tier includes ads. Choose Palette for web or API color previews with a free trial credit and a one-time purchase option. insMind AI Photo Restoration is an alternative for old-photo restoration on Android, iOS and web. VanceAI Photo Colorizer is suited to users who prefer credit-based web, Windows or API processing. Colourise is web-only with free trial access and paid unlimited processing. TrueColorizer is a web option with three lifetime free colorizations and low-volume monthly plans.

Verdict

Colorize is a sensible choice for family-memory preservation when you want one-tap mobile colorization and paid backup across devices. Its main reason to choose it is the combination of unlimited processing and sharing in the 59.99 USD yearly membership. Look elsewhere if you need a substantial free quota, fully published pricing for every plan, or a desktop-first editor.
