Overview

darktable is a free, open-source raw photo workflow application for photographers who want to manage, develop, and batch-edit images without changing their originals. It offers a deep, flexible toolbox, but its learning curve and a few meaningful format and packaging limits make it a less suitable choice for anyone seeking a straightforward editor or a uniform setup across distributions.

Key features

Raw workflow and image handling

darktable combines a database for digital negatives with a zoomable lighttable for browsing and tools to develop and enhance raw images. It also imports standard and high dynamic range formats, including JPEG, CR2, NEF, HDR, PFM, and RAF. Non-destructive editing keeps original files intact, which is useful for photographers who want to revise their work without overwriting source images.

Masking and batch editing support more involved or repeated workflows. Color management includes automatic display-profile detection on most systems and built-in ICC profiles for sRGB, Adobe RGB, XYZ, and linear RGB. Many operations can use OpenCL GPU acceleration, though that benefit depends on the system's support.

Capture, export, and automation

Tethered shooting with live view works with some camera brands, not universally. Export options include disk storage, email attachments, Piwigo webalbums, and HTML-based web galleries. Lua scripting can automate many parts of the application, making darktable more adaptable for users willing to build or maintain a scripted workflow.

AI tools and format limits

Optional AI features cover object masking, denoising, and upscaling, and are disabled by default. They are not included in the Flatpak release, so users who depend on those tools should choose another package format. darktable also does not support DCP camera profiles, and presets from other programs are incompatible; photographers relying on either should account for rebuilding their setup or choose a different tool.

Pricing

darktable is free under the GPL version 3 or later. There is no paid tier or free-trial period to weigh against feature restrictions; the application is the same free workflow toolbox. The project does not charge by seat, but the Flatpak AI omission remains a practical packaging distinction.

Platforms

darktable runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. The project provides Windows installers and macOS disk images, and points Linux and Unix users to source, AppImage, package-manager, and Flatpak options. The macOS bundles require macOS 13.5 (Ventura) or later. Windows builds are not signed with a trusted code-signing certificate, which can prompt SmartScreen or Smart App Control warnings. Help is directed to the Pixls.us forum; bug reports and feature requests go through GitHub Issues.

Who it's for

darktable suits photographers who want a free raw-processing workflow with non-destructive editing, batch tools, masking, and control over how they organize and automate work. Its breadth rewards users prepared to learn a complex toolbox. It is a weaker fit for people who need DCP camera profiles, want to reuse presets from another program, need AI features specifically in Flatpak, or expect tethered live view across all camera brands.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with raw support, masking, batch editing, and non-destructive changes in one workflow.
Pros: Broad format imports, color-management options, GPU acceleration, Lua scripting, and several export destinations give experienced users room to shape their process.
Cons: The steep learning curve raises the time investment for newcomers.
Cons: No DCP profile support or compatibility with presets from other programs can disrupt established camera and editing workflows.
Cons: AI tools are absent from Flatpak, while Windows signing warnings and the macOS version floor add setup considerations.

Verdict

Choose darktable if you want a capable, free raw workflow that preserves originals and gives you substantial control over editing, automation, and export. Look elsewhere if you need DCP profiles, seamless preset reuse, an easier learning curve, or AI features in the Flatpak build.
