Overview

Datawrapper combines chart, map, and table creation with interactive publishing, data import, and a brand kit. Its 25 interactive, responsive, accessible visualization types include more than 20 chart types. The maker, founded in 2012 and headquartered in Berlin, brings experience serving international newsrooms, though the product is aimed at anyone presenting data.

The platform extends beyond a web editor. A PowerPoint add-in lets users create, edit, embed, and update visualizations in presentations, while the REST API can create and edit charts for integrations such as CMS chart viewers and image exports. That makes it useful where visuals must move between publishing workflows, but the value of those integrations depends on whether they fit a team's existing systems.

Key features

Charts, maps, and tables

The chart range is substantial, and the map tools cover symbol, choropleth, and locator maps, with more than 4,000 basemaps and cartograms. Tables can combine images, heatmaps, and miniature charts with search, pagination, and sorting. This range lets publishers choose a format for different kinds of data rather than forcing everything into a chart; users seeking a narrower chart-only tool may not need the breadth.

Publishing, privacy, and security

Visualizations can be embedded on websites and exported as PNG, PDF, or SVG depending on plan. The free plan includes web publishing, embedding, and PNG downloads, while PDF and SVG require Pro or above. Datawrapper says its embeds have no trackers, cookies, or third-party scripts and meet GDPR and CCPA requirements. It says the service is hosted in Frankfurt and Stockholm within the EEA, is ISO 27001 certified, and receives yearly audits and penetration tests. It also says it encrypts data at rest and in transit, uses TLS, makes daily backups, and peer-reviews code.

Support is offered through a contact form, email, and an Academy with more than 100 articles; paid plans list email-based support. The combination of self-service materials and paid email support suits teams that can work independently, while Enterprise adds custom support and uptime guarantees.

Pricing

Datawrapper is freemium, with four plans. The free plan is unusually open for publishing volume, but its attribution requirement is a meaningful tradeoff for client-facing or branded work.

Free: 0.00 USD per free. Charts, maps, and tables; web publishing and embedding; PNG downloads; unlimited publishing. Published visualizations retain “Created with Datawrapper” attribution. It fits individuals or teams willing to keep the credit and needing no PDF or SVG downloads.
Pro: 21.00 USD per month, billed per user/month excl. VAT. It removes attribution, adds PDF and SVG downloads, and provides 90-day edit history. This is the practical step up for professional publishing where branding or vector and print-ready exports matter.
Business: 39.00 USD per month, billed per user/month excl. VAT. It includes Pro features, waterfall and dual-axis charts, advanced team permissions, and a 1-year edit history. Teams needing those chart types, finer permissions, or longer revision history have a concrete reason to pay more; smaller teams may find Pro sufficient.
Enterprise: custom pricing. It offers custom agreements with uptime and support guarantees, self-hosting of published visualizations, and SAML single sign-on. It is aimed at organizations whose deployment or assurance requirements exceed the standard plans.

Per-user billing means costs rise with the number of paid seats. No trial duration or renewal terms are provided for Datawrapper’s plans, so the stated monthly prices are the basis for comparison.

Platforms

Datawrapper is available on the web and lists Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as API and self-hosted options. The Enterprise plan specifically includes self-hosting of published visualizations; teams considering a self-managed deployment should distinguish that from the standard hosted service.

Who it's for

Datawrapper is best suited to publishers, analysts, and communications teams that need dependable web-ready charts, maps, or tables, especially when interactive embeds, newsroom-style workflows, or presentation and CMS integrations matter. The free plan can serve ongoing public publishing without a volume cap, provided attribution is acceptable. It is less compelling for users who need unbranded or PDF/SVG output but cannot justify per-user paid seats.

Pros and cons

Broad visualization coverage: More than 20 chart types sit alongside maps and feature-rich tables, reducing the need to split common publishing tasks across tools.
Free publishing without a volume ceiling: Unlimited publishing and PNG downloads make it viable for ongoing projects, but attribution remains on every free visualization.
Useful workflow extensions: The PowerPoint add-in and REST API support presentation and CMS-oriented workflows, though the specific fit will depend on a team's systems.
Paid export and brand gates: Pro removes attribution and adds PDF and SVG, but these capabilities begin at 21.00 USD per month per user, excl. VAT.
Team controls cost more: Advanced permissions, waterfall and dual-axis charts, and a year of edit history require Business at 39.00 USD per month per user, excl. VAT.

Alternatives

For broader data visualization choices, compare the Data Visualization Software category; for narrative-led presentations, see Data Storytelling Tools. Readers focused on geographic work can browse Interactive Map Software or Map Creation Software, while those building designed visual explainers can consult Infographic Software.

Plotly is another freemium option with a free trial and self-hosted platform support; consider it when that combination better suits your deployment needs.
Databox offers a free plan for one user and three data sources, so it may suit a solo user whose needs fit that capped setup.
Apache Superset is a free, open-source data exploration and visualization platform with self-managed installation options; choose it when self-management is central.
Kibana has a free, self-managed offering with community support and free Elastic Stack features, making it relevant to teams already choosing that route.
amCharts offers full functionality on a free plan with a small backlink and commercial use; it is worth considering when those terms fit better than Datawrapper’s attribution model.
Infogram has a Basic plan with one user, 35+ interactive chart types, up to 10 projects, and online publishing; consider it when that project-based setup meets your needs.
ClicData is another freemium option; compare its plan and billing terms if you are evaluating alternatives.
Vizzlo offers a free plan with watermarked charts and a Professional plan with 120+ chart types; consider it if its chart-focused plans better match your requirements.

Verdict

Choose Datawrapper if your priority is publishing polished, varied charts, maps, and tables across websites, presentations, and integrations, with an unlimited free publishing path. Its main catch is clear: keeping output unbranded and unlocking PDF and SVG exports requires paid per-user plans, while team controls and longer history cost more. If attribution is acceptable, the free tier is a strong starting point; if it is not, assess the paid seat cost before committing.
