Overview

Genymotion Desktop runs Android virtual devices on a Windows, macOS or Linux workstation, with a strong fit for developers who need configurable devices alongside ADB-based tools. Its local GPU acceleration and broad Android-version range are useful, but the workstation-only requirement and paid access to Android 16.0 narrow the choice.

Key features

More than 40 customizable phone and tablet templates give developers a range of device configurations to work with. Google Play, root access, gamepad support and multi-instance mode broaden its uses beyond basic app debugging. ADB-based IDE integration, including Android Studio, makes it a natural option for workflows already built around Android debugging tools.

Developer tools cover Android and device identifiers, capture, GPS, biometrics and network simulation. Local virtual devices use the host GPU, and Apple Mac M series systems can use native ARM64 images. Internet access is required at first run; afterward, offline use lasts 15 days, or longer with Premium.

This is software for physical workstations, not servers, virtual machines, VPS environments or cloud instances. That constraint rules it out for teams that need a hosted or virtualized emulator environment.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is limited to personal use. It includes the limited edition and free widgets, requires no license, and supports Android 5.0 through 15.0. It is a sensible starting point for personal projects, but Android 16.0 requires a paid license.

Educational costs 49.00 USD per year, billed annually, for students, teachers and schools with valid proof. It includes Free and Pro widgets, making it the clearest low-cost paid route for eligible education users. The 30-day Pro Trial costs 0.00 USD per free and includes all features and technical support, useful for evaluating the full offering before choosing a plan.

Individual has custom pricing for freelancers or self-employed users, includes Free and Pro widgets, and comes with best-effort email support. Business has custom pricing for companies and employees, high-priority email support and volume discounts. Premium requires a quote and targets large teams with all-inclusive widgets and Android versions, VIP support and license-server access for managing users' licenses. These paid options vary in support and included access; the available offline period is also longer on Premium.

Platforms

Genymotion Desktop runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, including native ARM64 images on Apple Mac M series. Virtual devices run locally and use the workstation GPU. Internet is needed at first launch, after which use can continue offline for 15 days or longer on Premium.

Who it's for

Choose Genymotion Desktop if you develop or evaluate Android apps on a physical workstation and value configurable device templates, ADB-based IDE integration and developer-focused simulation tools. It is also a fit for eligible students and educators who need a paid plan at 49.00 USD per year. Look elsewhere if your workflow depends on a server, virtual machine, VPS or cloud instance, or if Android 16.0 access without a paid license is essential.

Pros and cons

Verdict

Genymotion Desktop is a strong choice for Android developers who want local, configurable virtual devices, ADB-based IDE support and practical simulation tools on a physical workstation. Its broad free Android-version range makes it accessible for personal use, but paid licensing for Android 16.0 and the firm exclusion of hosted or virtual environments are reasons to look elsewhere.
