Overview

DramaQueen is desktop software for planning, drafting and revising fictional stories across prose, screen and stage formats. It is best suited to writers and story professionals who want structural tools alongside their manuscript, rather than a shared live-writing space. The permanent free edition is a meaningful strength; the main qualification is that current downloads are for Windows and macOS, despite Linux support in legacy releases.

Key features

Writers can move among plot, outline and script or narrative text as a story develops. Storylines, structure models, turning points, character profiles and story arcs help organize a project, while visual analysis and revision tracking support later review. This makes DramaQueen a strong fit for writers who work deliberately on story architecture, but not for teams that depend on real-time co-editing, which it does not offer.

The format range includes novels, screenplays, audio dramas, stage works, musicals and scripted podcasts. Smart Import accepts PDF, Word, Final Draft, TXT and RTF. Paid editions export to Word, EPUB, Final Draft, PDF and RTF; the product also lists EPUB3, Markdown and Fountain among its export formats. Final Draft exchange preserves screenplay elements such as characters, locations, script notes, scene titles and summaries, which helps writers move scripts between the applications without rebuilding those structures.

AI tools are optional and billed by usage rather than subscription. The maker says user text and ideas are not used to train the AI; that may reassure writers considering AI assistance, while consumption billing means costs depend on use.

DramaQueen works offline, a practical advantage for focused writing without a continuous connection. An internet connection is still needed for license checks and automatic update downloads. Support includes in-app help, video tutorials and a support-request route; paid-edition pages say missing activation-code queries receive a response within hours.

Pricing

DramaQueen is freemium. The FREE edition is free, lasts indefinitely and places no cap on project count or length. It includes writing, formatting, outlining, Smart Import, open export and linked text notes, making it a substantial option for writers who can work within its free-edition feature set.

The 30-day trial provides 30 individual test days within a three-month period, then switches to the permanent FREE edition. Paid plans broaden the license and edition options:

PLUS: 99.00 USD per month, billed as an instant purchase, and unlocks on 2 computers.
PLUS hire purchase: 11.90 USD per month for 9 monthly payments.
PRO: 297.00 USD per month, billed as an instant purchase, and unlocks on 3 computers.
PRO hire purchase: 17.90 USD per month for 18 monthly payments.
PRO STUDENT: 49.00 USD per month for an 18-month usage license.
PRO upgrade from PLUS or PRO STUDENT: 198.00 USD per month, billed as an instant purchase, for an unrestricted PRO license.

The hire-purchase options spread payment across fixed monthly installments, while the instant-purchase licenses unlock on two or three computers depending on edition. Student pricing is limited to an 18-month usage license. The free plan is the clearest choice for writers who need core drafting and import/export without a purchase; prospective buyers should compare the paid edition’s tools against their specific workflow before choosing a license.

Platforms

The current download page supports Windows 10 or later (64-bit) and macOS 13 or later. Linux installers are for legacy releases, so Linux users should not assume current-version support. DramaQueen is a desktop application, not a web-based collaboration environment.

Who it's for

DramaQueen names authors, dramaturgs, editors, creative producers, broadcasters, directors and film scholars among its intended users. Its breadth across prose, screen, audio and stage writing makes it relevant to people developing different kinds of fictional work. It is less suitable for collaborators who need to draft together in real time or for Linux users who require a current release.

Pros and cons

Pro: The permanent FREE edition has no project-count or length cap, so writers can continue using its core writing, formatting and outlining tools without a time limit.
Pro: Story structure tools span planning and revision, supporting writers who want to examine story shape as well as draft text.
Pro: Final Draft import and export preserve screenplay structure, reducing friction for writers exchanging scripts between applications.
Pro: Offline use supports focused desktop work when an internet connection is unavailable, aside from licensing and update checks.
Con: No real-time collaboration makes it a poor match for teams editing a script simultaneously.
Con: Current downloads target Windows and macOS; Linux users are limited to legacy installers.
Con: AI usage is consumption-billed, so writers who use it must account for variable usage costs.

Alternatives

For a screenwriting shortlist, see Screenwriting Software; for broader writing tools, see Writing Apps.

Celtx is worth considering when cloud-based script editing and real-time collaboration matter more than DramaQueen’s desktop, offline workflow; its free studio is limited to one project.
Story Architect is an alternative for writers who want a tool available across Linux, desktop and mobile platforms; its maker describes it as open core, with some features closed source.
Studiovity is an option for writers seeking content-creation and film-TV pre-production features, with an Education monthly plan at 22.00 USD per month.
TalkingDraft may suit writers who want transcription alongside outlining: its free plan includes unlimited standard transcription, a free outliner and formatted script export, with a three-story limit before sharing for more.
WriterDuet is a better fit when real-time collaboration is essential; its free plan allows three projects and its Plus plan includes unlimited projects and collaboration.
Fade In is a paid alternative for writers looking for screenwriting software across desktop, mobile and web platforms.
Final Draft is worth comparing for writers who want its Final Draft 13 and Final Draft Cloud annual suite, priced at 99.99 USD per year.
OpenDraft is a free alternative with no account, subscription or feature gating.

Verdict

DramaQueen is the right choice for solo writers who want structured story development, broad fiction-format support and a permanent free way to draft offline. Its strongest reasons to choose it are the uncapped free edition and the combination of structural tools with Final Draft exchange. Look elsewhere if you need real-time collaboration or a current Linux release.
