Overview

Filevine is a configurable platform for coordinating legal matters and the work around them. It suits law firms, government legal organizations, and corporate legal teams whose workflows span several legal functions. Choose it for breadth and tailored packages; look elsewhere if you need a mobile app or a clearly priced, off-the-shelf plan.

Key features

Matter management combines task tracking, contact management, deadlines, and calendars, giving teams a shared structure for coordinating complex work. Document Management adds document organization, advanced search, and secure file sharing. Together, they make Filevine more compelling for teams handling active case files than for buyers seeking a single-purpose tool.

Intake tools capture, qualify, and route leads automatically, including through AI-powered features and intake forms. This can standardize how prospective matters enter a team's workflow. Deposition tools cover scheduling, live transcription, AI summaries, and a searchable library, making them relevant to teams that manage depositions alongside case work.

LOIS AI Drafting generates, edits, and reviews documents using matter context, with human-verified output. The separate LOIS Explore tier offers AI legal research and drafting, document uploads and questions, and cited results, but does not connect to Filevine Case Management. That boundary matters: Explore can be tried independently, but it does not provide the integrated matter context of the broader platform.

The Matters package includes time tracking, invoice management, and online payments. Filevine also lists native integrations across billing and timekeeping, email and calendar, data visualization, law management, and communication. Security measures include encryption at rest and in transit, centralized governance controls, and identity and access management. Filevine is hosted on AWS; Customer Success and Support teams provide ongoing guidance, while Certified Implementation Partners can assist with setup and workflow customization.

Pricing

Filevine is a paid platform with custom pricing tailored to each organization. The custom-built package can include matter management, document management, and billing and payments, with intake, deposition, signature, and AI packages optional. This approach can accommodate teams with different requirements, but buyers should expect to scope their needs before comparing costs; there is no published standard price to budget against.

Filevine packages are custom quote and include custom-built packages, Matters, Intake, Depositions, and Signatures packages, plus optional package extensions. This is the relevant route for organizations seeking the connected legal-work platform, but the package mix and price depend on the organization.

LOIS Explore is free, with no credit card required. It includes AI legal research and drafting, document uploads and questions, and cited AI results. Its key limit is no Filevine Case Management connection, so it is a low-commitment way to use LOIS rather than a free version of the full platform. A free trial is also offered, but LOIS Explore's trial does not include Case Management access.

Platforms

Filevine supports web and API access. It has no mobile apps, a meaningful drawback for legal teams that need dedicated phone or tablet workflows while away from a desk.

Who it's for

Filevine is aimed at law firms, state and federal government organizations, and corporate legal teams. It is strongest for organizations that want to bring matters, documents, intake, depositions, and billing into a tailored set of packages. Teams that need only one narrow function, a published price, or mobile apps should consider a more focused alternative.

Pros and cons

Broad legal workflow coverage: Matter management, documents, intake, depositions, and billing can be assembled around an organization's needs.
Integrated AI options: LOIS AI Drafting can use matter context, while Explore provides a free entry point for research and drafting.
Custom pricing: Packages are tailored to the organization, but the absence of a standard price makes early cost comparison difficult.
No mobile apps: Web and API support do not provide a dedicated mobile app for teams that need one.
Explore is separate from Case Management: Its free research and drafting tier cannot connect to Filevine matters.

Alternatives

For a more focused docketing tool, CaseDesk has a free beta for 90 days, followed by a two-week read-only grace period, and a CaseDesk Pro plan at 290.00 USD per year billed annually. LitDocket offers a limited free tier that becomes read-only after its 14-day trial, with Solo at 49.00 USD per month for up to 25 active cases; consider it when that case limit and price structure fit better than a custom package. CourtDrive starts with a Basic plan at 35.00 USD per month, includes up to three users and 250 uploads for Apps, and charges 15 cents per additional upload; its user and upload limits make it a more defined option for teams whose needs fit those terms.

AcclaimIP uses annual, prepaid per-seat licensing with seats automatically renewing annually, a more specific fit for buyers seeking that licensing model. DocketBird has library access at no charge for law-school, university, and public libraries that include a prominent website link. Alt Legal offers a Trademark Protection add-on for up to 50 matters at 30.00 USD per month. AnchorLex has a free forever plan capped at five court orders per month and one sync calendar, while Docket Alarm provides five free actions per week across searches, docket views, and document views, excluding government-purchased documents such as PACER filings.

Browse legal docketing software, legal transcription software, legal practice management software, legal deposition software, and legal client portal software for focused category options.

Verdict

Filevine is a strong candidate for legal organizations that need several connected workflows and are prepared to scope a custom package. Its breadth, matter-aware drafting, and implementation support are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if mobile apps, transparent standard pricing, or a focused single-function tool matters more than package flexibility.
