Overview

Fing combines network inventory with checks for router vulnerabilities, open ports and network threats. It can flag an unknown device when it connects and show its brand, model and type, giving users more context than a connection alert alone. For households, that helps identify new arrivals on Wi-Fi; for consultants, it supports audits and monitoring across client networks.

Discovery is hybrid, and Fing supports asset inventory, scheduled discovery and SNMP discovery, with hybrid network scope. Its security focus is useful, but the free tier’s cap of three scans per day makes it a poor fit for users who expect persistent monitoring without a subscription.

Key features

Router checks and threat monitoring

Scheduled router checks look for known vulnerabilities, outdated firmware, DNS hijacking risks and exposed management interfaces. Fing also scans open ports and detects network threats continuously and automatically. The distinction between those capabilities and the free plan matters: scheduled vulnerability scans and continuous threat detection require a subscription, so free users should think of Fing as a tool for periodic checks rather than continuous protection.

Unknown devices and hidden cameras

When an unfamiliar device joins, Fing provides its brand, model and type. It also scans connected Wi-Fi networks for cameras and spy devices, drawing on a database of more than 12 million known camera models. Those features suit users who want to investigate unexpected devices or check a connected network for hidden cameras; they do not remove the need to decide whether a detected device is legitimate.

Always-on use and automation

Fing Agent can run on Raspberry Pi, Docker or NAS for 24/7 automated security checks, giving subscribers an option for always-on monitoring. Home Assistant, IFTTT and the Fing Local API support presence data, network events and custom automation. Fing says it is SOC 2 Type II certified. It also says payment data is encrypted and sent directly to PCI DSS-compliant processor Stripe, and that it does not collect or store bank or card details.

Pricing

Fing uses a freemium model. The Free plan is free and includes up to three scans per day, internet speed tests, network and ISP reporting, and troubleshooting tools. It is appropriate for occasional checks, but not scheduled vulnerability scans or continuous threat detection.

Premium costs 7.99 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes two monitored networks, continuous scans, and advanced security and network control. This is the more natural fit for an individual or household that wants ongoing coverage, though the two-network limit may constrain users monitoring several sites.

Professional costs 16.99 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes three or more monitored networks, shared workspaces, multi-user collaboration and advanced reporting. Those additions make it the better match for consultants and small businesses that need to coordinate monitoring across networks; users who only need one or two networks may not need the collaboration features.

Platforms

Fing lists Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, API and self-hosted platforms. Desktop support is narrower than that broad platform list suggests: Fing Desktop is available for Windows and macOS, but not currently Linux. For always-on security checks, Fing Agent can run on Raspberry Pi, Docker or NAS.

Who it's for

Fing is a sensible choice for home users who want router checks, device alerts and camera detection in one place, and for IT consultants, MSPs and small businesses that audit client networks. The Free plan can serve users who scan intermittently. Anyone who needs scheduled vulnerability checks or continuous threat detection should budget for a subscription, while users requiring Fing Desktop on Linux should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Useful combination of inventory and security checks: router vulnerability checks, open-port scans and device identification cover more than a simple network inventory.
Camera detection has a defined scope: scans use a database of over 12 million known camera models, which helps explain what the feature is designed to recognize.
Options for ongoing and collaborative use: Agent supports 24/7 checks, and Professional adds shared workspaces, multiple users and advanced reporting.
Free security monitoring is limited: three scans per day are included, but scheduled vulnerability scans and continuous threat detection require a subscription.
Desktop Linux is a gap: Fing Desktop is available for Windows and macOS, not Linux.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Network Discovery Software or Network Monitoring.

LOGINventory is worth considering if a free inventory tool for up to 20 devices is the priority; its Forever-Free plan has no time limit.
Domotz is an option for per-device pricing: its listed option costs 1.50 USD per managed device per month, billed in bundles of 10.
OCS Inventory may suit readers who specifically want open-source inventory software and a community-developed project.
runZero may fit teams that want a free allowance with defined asset, organization, task and retention limits: its Community Edition includes 100 assets, one organization, 10 recurring tasks and 30 days of data retention.
Docusnap is an alternative with a paid annual plan starting at 465.00 EUR per year and local installation.
LanTopoLog may be preferable for a one-time license: its LanTopoLog 2 plan costs 50.00 USD per once and covers one local network.
NetworkTonic is another freemium alternative.
Device42 is a paid alternative with custom annual subscription pricing based on device count.

Verdict

Choose Fing if you want router security checks, device alerts and camera detection together, especially for home networks or small-scale client monitoring. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of practical security checks with options for continuous scans and automation; its main drawback is that the free plan does not provide scheduled or continuous security monitoring.
