Overview

Wise supports sending money to bank accounts in more than 140 countries, as well as receiving international payments, checking rates and paying bills. Wise says many popular routes deliver within a day, on the same day or instantly; the actual speed depends on the route. The company was founded in 2011 and is based in London.

For people who send across currencies, using the mid-market rate and showing charges before payment are meaningful advantages: the cost is clearer before committing. Wise says it does not add hidden fees or exchange-rate markups, but transfer and conversion fees vary by currency, so users should compare the quote for their specific route.

Key features

Transfers and recurring payments

Transfers can be funded by Apple Pay, Google Pay, card or bank transfer, and Wise supports tracking, scheduled transfers and repeating a previous transfer. Those tools suit people managing regular payments as well as one-off remittances. Sending to another Wise account has no sending fee, but conversion charges can still apply.

Live rate alerts notify users about exchange-rate changes and the mid-market rate. They can help someone decide when to send, though they do not remove the variable transfer and conversion costs.

Security and verification

Two-factor authentication protects accounts and transactions, and Wise holds customer money separately from its own accounts at established financial institutions. Photo ID may be required for some currencies or larger transfers, so a user should be prepared for verification when applicable. Wise says it is regulated by authorities worldwide and licensed in most states; for India, it works with a local bank partner and has RBI authorisation.

Customer support is available by email, live chat and phone, 24/7 in English and in 14 other languages. Wise Business also offers a feature for managing team finances, though the personal transfer pricing below does not describe business terms.

Pricing

Wise uses a freemium model, with free account registration and no free trial. Its personal account and transfers plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no subscriptions or plans: users pay for what they use. Sending and conversion fees vary by currency and start from 0.33%. The plan includes a 200 USD monthly ATM withdrawal allowance shown as free, alongside variable transfer and conversion fees.

This structure fits people who want an account without a subscription and whose costs depend on how much and which currency they send. The free account is not the same as free transfers: the percentage-based starting fee and currency-specific charges matter, and the ATM allowance is capped monthly.

Platforms

Wise is available on the web, Android and iOS. That gives users the choice of arranging transfers in a browser or using either major mobile platform.

Who it's for

Wise is best suited to individuals who send money internationally, receive payments from abroad or repeat cross-border payments and want to see fees before paying. People who need a fixed transfer charge, or whose route has an unattractive variable fee, should compare alternatives before choosing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Mid-market exchange rates, upfront fee display and no stated exchange-rate markup make costs easier to assess before a transfer.
Pros: Tracking, scheduling, repeat transfers and multiple funding methods support both occasional and recurring payments.
Pros: Transfers to another Wise account have no sending fee, and registration is free.
Cons: Transfer and conversion fees vary by currency, so free registration does not mean a free international transfer.
Cons: Photo ID may be required for some currencies or large transfers, adding a verification step for some users.

Alternatives

Consider TransferGo if a free multicurrency account and free transfers between TransferGo accounts suit your needs; its account setup is free and it supports Android and iOS. Remitly is another option, with a US-to-France bank deposit example priced at 0.00 USD per once and a cash-pickup option priced at 2.99 USD per once. Those examples are route-specific rather than a general comparison with Wise.

Paysera may suit someone seeking a free multi-currency IBAN account and 30 free SEPA or SEPA Instant transfers monthly, with web, app and API platforms. Panda Remit quotes a transfer fee of 6.99 USD per month for US-origin transfers to global destinations, with fees varying by amount and destination. OFX offers a global business account with free registration and no minimum balance requirement.

CurrencyFair is worth comparing for its flat international transfer fee of 3.00 EUR per month (billed when sending money or transferring out). Xe Money Transfer is another freemium option on web, iOS and Android. For peer-to-peer payments, Venmo has a free business profile with no monthly or setup fees, though transaction fees apply.

Verdict

Choose Wise if you want a no-subscription account for international transfers and value seeing the fee and exchange rate before paying. Its mid-market-rate approach, tracking and recurring-payment tools make it a compelling fit for regular cross-border use, but currency-dependent charges mean it is worth checking the quote for each route; look elsewhere if you need a predictable flat fee.
