Overview

GroupManager lets administrators assign players to permission groups and arrange those groups into inheritance and promotion or demotion hierarchies. That gives servers a way to manage different authority levels without defining every permission separately for each player. Administration is possible through configuration files, console commands, or in-game commands, so operators can choose a file-based or command-driven workflow.

Permission rules include wildcard, negative, and exception nodes, and user or group permissions can expire after a set duration. These options support detailed access policies, but they put the burden on server operators to keep inherited permissions and exceptions coherent. GroupManager exposes a build-status variable that other plug-ins may use; it does not provide antigrief behavior itself.

Key features

Ranks and integrations

Groups and users can have variables such as prefixes, suffixes, and build status. Chat plug-ins can read the prefix and suffix values, while other plug-ins may use build status. PlaceholderAPI placeholders cover groups, subgroups, prefixes, suffixes, and permission checks, which makes those values accessible to compatible integrations.

Storage and setup

Storage backends include YAML, H2, MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MariaDB. That range accommodates simple file-based storage as well as database-backed setups, though the appropriate choice depends on how the server is administered. Installation is straightforward in outline: place GroupManager.jar in the server's plugins folder, start and stop the server, then edit config.yml. Plugins can also declare GroupManager as a provided Maven dependency through JitPack.

The v3.0 release notes describe a default policy that purges user data at server start after 90 days without a login. Accounts can be protected from that purge by setting lastplayed to 0, a detail operators should account for when managing long-inactive players.

Pricing

GroupManager costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan includes the permissions plug-in, and the software is released under the GNU General Public License version 3. There is no paid plan to weigh against it, so it suits server owners who want permission management without a software fee. The free price does not include antigrief functionality; that job remains with other plug-ins.

Platforms

GroupManager is self-hosted and supports Bukkit and Spigot servers. The v3.2 release is labeled for Minecraft 1.8 to 1.20+, giving owners of servers in that range a stated compatibility target. It is not a hosted service: operators install and administer it within their own server environment.

Who it's for

GroupManager fits Minecraft server owners who need configurable ranks such as default, builder, moderator, admin, and owner, especially when those ranks need inheritance or promotion and demotion paths. Its placeholders and group variables also make it useful where chat or other plug-ins need to consume rank-related values. Choose another tool or add a separate protection plug-in if the requirement is preventing or responding to griefing rather than controlling permissions.

Pros and cons

Flexible permission rules: Wildcard, negative, and exception nodes, plus expiring permissions, support more than simple all-or-nothing ranks.
Several administration paths: File, console, and in-game command management give operators options for maintaining users and groups.
Broad storage selection: YAML and five database backends cover file-based and database-oriented server setups.
No built-in antigrief protection: Build status is only a value other plug-ins may use, so protection requires additional software.
Inactive-user retention needs attention: The default 90-day purge can remove user data after prolonged inactivity unless an account is protected.

Alternatives

LuckPerms is another free permissions option, with API, Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms; choose it if those platform choices better fit your setup. Multipass is a free permissions plug-in for Nukkit, so it is the relevant alternative for a Nukkit server rather than Bukkit or Spigot. BungeePerms is free and covers BungeeCord/Velocity as well as Spigot/PaperSpigot, making it the better fit when those proxy platforms are central.

Nimbus AntiCheat is a free option for Paper 1.21.8 requiring Java 21 and PacketEvents, for Java-edition players. ServerRoles, ReducedX-Anti Cheat, ThunderPerms, and PermissionManager are also alternatives to consider.

For more options, see Minecraft Permissions Plugins. Taskbar Customization Software is another directory list.

Verdict

Choose GroupManager if you run a self-hosted Bukkit or Spigot server and want free, configurable permission ranks with inheritance, timed assignments, and several storage backends. Its strongest case is the combination of detailed rules and integration-friendly group values. Look elsewhere or pair it with another plug-in if you need antigrief protection built into the permissions tool.
