Overview

TrainingPeaks is a planning and analysis platform for endurance training, with web and mobile access alongside a desktop analysis product. It is best suited to athletes following a structured program and coaches managing athlete training. The depth of its planning and performance tools is the main draw; the trade-offs are Premium-only athlete features and coaching plans with significant monthly costs.

Key features

Workout analysis includes lap and split breakdowns, charts, and Peak Performance notifications for power, heart rate, or pace. Performance Management Charts track training load over time to help assess fitness and fatigue. Together, these tools give athletes a way to review patterns across training rather than just log individual sessions; they are less compelling if all you need is a basic activity record.

Users can buy a training plan, create their own, use an Annual Training Plan, or select from more than 700 pre-built workouts in Joe Friel’s library. The Structured Workout Builder creates sessions around heart rate and pace, with automatic syncing to compatible devices and platforms. That makes planned sessions easier to carry through to a workout, particularly for athletes who already train with supported equipment.

TrainingPeaks says it is compatible with hundreds of devices and apps, including Garmin, Apple, Zwift, Wahoo, and Suunto. Completed Garmin Connect activities can sync automatically to the TrainingPeaks calendar, and eligible future structured workouts can sync to Garmin Connect. Workout Comparison is a Premium Athlete feature, and some other athlete features also require Premium, so the free account is not a like-for-like substitute for a full analysis workflow.

Pricing

The Basic athlete account is free. It is a sensible starting point for athletes who want to explore the platform without paying, but some features require Premium.

Premium athlete costs 19.95 USD per month, billed monthly, with no contracts or startup fees. The annual option costs 134.99 USD per year, shown as $11.25/month billed annually, and saves 44% compared with monthly billing. Both paid athlete plans include Premium features; the annual plan suits someone willing to commit for the lower effective monthly cost, while monthly billing avoids that annual commitment.

Coach Edition costs 21.99 USD per month, billed monthly, plus a $99 start-up fee (free with coupon code TPCOACH). It includes 4 Basic Athlete Accounts and 1 Premium Athlete Account, with additional Premium athletes at $9/month/athlete. That structure is aimed at a coach starting with a small roster; the added per-athlete cost and initial fee matter as the roster grows.

Three coaching plans bundle a Premium account and a custom training plan. Bronze coaching is 149.00 USD per month and includes 2 emails/month, 1 phone call/quarter, and 1 plan adjustment/month. Silver coaching is 229.00 USD per month, with unlimited emails, 1 phone call/month, and 2 plan adjustments/month. Gold coaching is 359.00 USD per month and includes unlimited emails, phone calls, and plan adjustments. These tiers make sense for athletes seeking progressively more coach contact; Bronze is more limited, while Gold is the option for ongoing access without stated contact or adjustment caps.

The pricing note also gives a paid starting point of $11.25/user/mo (annual) and a 14-day trial. The listed athlete annual price matches that monthly equivalent; the coaching tiers are a much larger commitment for athletes who want coach support rather than software alone.

Platforms

TrainingPeaks supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. The company also lists WKO+ as desktop software for scientific analysis and planning, and offers TrainingPeaks mobile apps for iOS and Android. This range gives athletes access across phone and computer, while WKO+ is a separate desktop product for users who want that analysis and planning environment.

Who it's for

TrainingPeaks describes its audience as athletes and coaches, from age-group athletes to Olympians and Tour de France teams. Its combination of structured plans, training-load charts, and device syncing is best suited to endurance athletes who follow measurable goals and coaches who need athlete accounts. It is a weaker fit for someone seeking only general workout logging or who does not need structured endurance planning.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple planning routes, including self-built plans, an Annual Training Plan, purchased plans, and more than 700 pre-built workouts, suit athletes with different levels of programming support.
Pro: Training-load charts, workout analysis, and device syncing connect session review with planned training.
Pro: Coach Edition includes five athlete accounts at its base tier, including one Premium account.
Con: Some athlete features, including Workout Comparison, require Premium, limiting what a free account can do.
Con: Coach Edition adds a $99 start-up fee unless the TPCOACH coupon code is used, and extra Premium athletes cost $9/month/athlete.
Con: Coaching tiers start at 149.00 USD per month, making them a substantial step up from software-only athlete plans.

TrainingPeaks says it uses industry-standard security measures but does not guarantee the security of data transmitted over the internet. Customer support is directed through its Help Center.

Alternatives

For a broader set of fitness workout tracking software, compare options by whether you need endurance-specific planning and analysis or a different training focus.

Choose Hevy instead if a lower-cost workout tracker is the priority: its free plan caps routines at 4 and custom exercises at 7, while PRO Monthly is 2.99 USD per month. Garmin Connect is a reasonable alternative for athletes centered on Garmin, with a free plan and a Garmin Connect+ Monthly Plan at 6.99 USD per month; TrainingPeaks can already sync completed Garmin activities and eligible future structured workouts with it.

My PT Hub may suit coaches looking for a client-management option, with a Starter plan at 22.50 USD per month billed annually and 3 clients. MyFitnessPal is a better match when food and exercise logging, recipes, measurements, and partner-app connections are the focus; its Free plan includes those tools.

ABC Trainerize is another coaching option, with a free Basic tier limited to 1 client and a Grow plan at 9.00 USD per month. Alpha Progression suits users who want to log workouts and build their own plans for free, though its free tier omits plan generation, recommendations, and charts.

TrainHeroic is an alternative for athlete or team training, with paid plans organized by athlete-count tiers. For a free and open-source option, wger Workout Manager is available under AGPL-3.0-or-later.

Verdict

Choose TrainingPeaks if you are an endurance athlete or coach who wants structured planning, training-load analysis, and device syncing in one platform. Its range of plans and review tools is the clearest reason to choose it; look elsewhere if you need only a simple log, want all athlete features without Premium, or do not want to pay for a coaching tier.
