Overview

HumHub brings communication, collaboration and knowledge sharing together for company intranets, knowledge bases, project hubs, and customer or partner communities. Its built-in tools cover common collaboration needs, while optional modules let organizations extend the platform. That breadth is useful when one system must serve varied groups, but it also means choosing the right modules and hosting model is part of adopting it.

Organizations can run HumHub on their own infrastructure or use managed SaaS hosted on European servers. Self-hosting gives an organization control of its own environment; the SaaS option avoids hosting it there. HumHub GmbH & Co. KG is based in Munich, Germany.

Key features

Personalized dashboards, activity streams, configurable notifications, granular permissions, full-text search, file management and social interactions provide a foundation for sharing updates and organizing work. Permissions are particularly relevant when a network includes private groups or different audiences.

More than 80 optional modules include News, Messenger, Calendar, LDAP, SAML SSO, surveys and translation tools. Integrations include OnlyOffice, Collabora Online and a RESTful API. This modular approach can accommodate different workflows, but organizations should assess which extensions they need rather than assume every capability is part of the core.

Private spaces, event hosting and moderation tools support both internal networks and external communities. Responsive access works across smartphones, tablets and desktop devices, with Android and iOS apps alongside the web platform.

HumHub says its SaaS uses European servers, is ISO 27001-certified and GDPR-compliant. With on-premise hosting, data stays in the organization's own environment. Community Edition support comes from the community and GitHub; Professional adds email and helpdesk support, while Enterprise includes a dedicated Customer Success Manager.

Pricing

Community Edition is free under the AGPLv3 open-source license. It is self-hosted on the organization's own servers, includes access to the Module Marketplace and free upgrades, with support through the community. It fits organizations prepared to operate their own installation and rely on community support.

Professional Edition costs 144.00 EUR per month, billed monthly, for up to 100 users. The displayed indicative price assumes SaaS hosting and no onboarding. It adds premium support, all updates and upgrades including security patches, prioritized bug fixing, and long-term maintenance of the latest two major releases. This is the clearest fit for teams that want managed hosting and a support commitment without an enterprise deployment.

Enterprise Edition has custom pricing. It includes a dedicated hosting cluster, a 99.5% uptime SLA, a dedicated Customer Success Manager, a custom contract, DPA and security review, and multi-site or multi-tenant deployments. It is aimed at organizations needing those service and deployment arrangements. Networks with 1,000 or more users require a custom quote.

Platforms

HumHub is available on the web and through Android and iOS apps. Organizations can choose self-hosting or managed SaaS; the platform also lists an API. Responsive access supports smartphones, tablets and desktop devices.

Who it's for

HumHub is a strong candidate for small teams, nonprofits and larger organizations that want an intranet, knowledge base, project hub or customer and partner community, especially when modular configuration and hosting choice matter. Community Edition favors teams able to manage their own servers. Professional suits organizations wanting SaaS and premium support for up to 100 users. Enterprise is the more suitable route for dedicated hosting, multi-site or multi-tenant needs, or a formal uptime SLA.

It is less compelling for a group seeking a fixed, fully managed setup without decisions about modules or deployment, or for a large network expecting a simple per-user price: 1,000 or more users require a custom quote.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free self-hosting under AGPLv3 gives technically capable organizations a no-cost way to run the platform.
Pros: More than 80 optional modules and a choice of self-hosting or European-hosted SaaS allow a setup to match different organizational needs.
Pros: Professional includes security updates, prioritized bug fixing and maintenance of the latest two major releases, not just premium support.
Cons: Community Edition relies on community and GitHub support, so it does not provide the paid support channels of Professional or Enterprise.
Cons: Professional's 144.00 EUR per month price covers up to 100 users and assumes SaaS hosting without onboarding; it is not a published per-user rate for larger networks.
Cons: Enterprise pricing is custom, and its dedicated hosting and service terms may be more than a smaller organization needs.

Alternatives

Employee Intranet Software is a useful category to compare if the central requirement is an internal company network; Social Networking Software, Online Community Platforms and Community Platforms are relevant when the priority is an external or member community. For a wider collaboration shortlist, see Team Collaboration Software.

Appspace Signage is another freemium option, but its free plan is bounded to one compatible device, two Premium Users, two admins, 5GB storage and 5GB/month bandwidth. MangoApps may suit buyers looking for a paid Communications & Intranet plan, starting at 9.00 USD per month from 200 employees, with volume pricing and a second-suite discount applied.

Blink is a paid alternative with a Core plan at 4.50 USD per month per user, including company branding, internal communications, real-time collaboration and a knowledge hub. Axero is another paid option, with Standard covering workspaces and groups, communication tools, content management, notifications, task management and gamification.

eXo Platform offers Silver and Gold plans with stated space and storage allocations and a 10-user minimum. Jalios Intranet uses personalized offers based on product and employee count, with preferential rates for some associations, NGOs and federations. Flip offers a Growth plan at 4.95 EUR per year for up to 300 employees, with the platform only and individual add-ons available on request. KenCube Social Intranet offers three editions with a non-binding quote on request.

Verdict

Choose HumHub if you need an adaptable intranet or community platform and value the freedom to self-host or move to managed European SaaS. The free Community Edition and extensive module selection are its clearest advantages; the trade-off is that support, hosting and enterprise service commitments depend on the plan, and larger networks must seek custom pricing.
