Overview

IDrive is a cloud backup service for computers, phones, servers, and NAS devices, with cloud-application backup available as an add-on. It suits households and organizations that need one account for varied devices and a recoverable history, rather than just a current copy. Its broad restore options are a strength; storage limits and potential overage charges make capacity a key buying consideration.

Key features

IDrive covers Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android, servers, and NAS devices. Incremental, compressed backups transfer modified portions of files, which reduces bandwidth use after the initial backup. That combination is useful in mixed-device environments, though the practical value depends on choosing enough storage for the devices being protected.

File versioning retains up to 30 previous versions, and Snapshots provide point-in-time recovery. Alongside ransomware protection, these offer a way to restore data from before an incident. You can restore individual files, earlier versions, deleted files, and disk images, or use IDrive Express. True Archiving keeps files in the account until you delete them or run Archive Cleanup, making it useful for retaining copies beyond the life of the original device.

Files are encrypted with 256-bit AES in transit and at rest. Private encryption keys are optional and are not stored on IDrive’s servers, which gives security-conscious users a choice about key handling. Add-ons cover Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Dropbox, and Box. IDrive also cites SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certifications and support for requirements including GDPR, PCI, and HIPAA; a Business Associate Agreement is available for HIPAA.

Team and Business plans include administration of multiple users through a web console or administrative account. Business accounts have no stated restriction on the number of computers backed up to one account. Support is available around the clock by live chat, email, and phone.

Pricing

IDrive is freemium. Basic has no listed price and provides 10 GB of storage without requiring a credit card; that is a low-commitment way to try the service, but a tight ceiling for backing up several devices. A Basic account can also add services such as Cloud Applications Backup, which has a 7-day free trial.

IDrive Mini: 0.25 USD per month for 100 GB and one user. This is the lowest-cost paid option, but its single-user, 100 GB allowance is for modest needs.
IDrive Personal: 11.99 USD per month for 5 TB, one user, and multiple computers. It fits an individual protecting several computers who needs more room than Mini provides.
IDrive Team: 11.99 USD per month for 5 TB, five computers, and five users. The shared user and computer limits suit a small team, but constrain growth beyond those allowances.
IDrive Business: 59.99 USD per month for 1.25 TB and unlimited users, computers, servers, Exchange, SQL, and NAS devices. Its broad device allowance favors organizations with many systems; the storage quota still needs to fit their data.
Microsoft Office 365 Backup: 20.00 USD per year, billed at $20/Seat/Year, with unlimited storage and a 7-day free trial. Its seat-based price and application-specific scope make it a separate choice from general device backup.

Exceeding storage limits may incur $0.25/GB/month on Personal and $0.50/GB/month on Team and Business, so sustained overages can change the cost calculation. IDrive advertises first-year discounts and savings on two-year plans; the monthly prices above are the stated plan prices. Basic’s 10 GB cap is the free-plan limit.

Platforms

IDrive supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web, as well as servers and NAS devices. This makes it a practical fit when a backup account must cover desktop and mobile systems alongside business infrastructure.

Who it's for

IDrive is a strong fit for people who want computer and mobile backups together, and for teams or businesses that need shared administration and server or NAS coverage. Version history, Snapshots, and True Archiving are especially useful when recovery must reach beyond the latest file copy. It is less compelling for anyone whose data comfortably exceeds a plan’s quota or who needs a simple photo-only service.

Pros and cons

Pros: One service spans computers, phones, servers, and NAS devices, avoiding separate backup accounts for different device classes.
Pros: Up to 30 prior versions, Snapshots, and True Archiving provide several routes to recover older or deleted data.
Pros: Optional private keys, business administration, and 24/7 support serve users with security or operational requirements.
Cons: Basic’s 10 GB allowance is limited for multi-device backup, and paid overages may add meaningful recurring cost.
Cons: Team is capped at five users and five computers, while Business’s unlimited device scope still comes with a 1.25 TB quota.

Alternatives

For a photo-focused library rather than broad device backup, compare Ente Photos, which has a free 10 GB tier and a 50 GB Starter plan at 2.49 USD per month. If paying once for photo storage is preferable to an ongoing backup subscription, FOREVER offers a 10GB plan for 179.99 USD one-time. PhotoSync is another photo-transfer option; its free tier covers basic transfers, while full-size transfer, RAW, NAS, and cloud features are paid features.

Rawback may suit a reader seeking photo-oriented storage with a free 5 GB tier and monthly AI credits. Picture Keeper is a paid alternative with a 30-day free trial and a 3.99 USD monthly KeepSafe plan for photo, video, and contact backup on iPhone and Android. Tonfotos offers a free lifetime license with limited people-on-photos capacity. Pho is a freemium option whose core sync engine is open source.

Verdict

Choose IDrive if you need one backup service for several device types and value version history, point-in-time recovery, and long-term retention. Its strongest case is breadth: computer, mobile, server, and NAS backup sit alongside file and cloud-application options. Look elsewhere if your data is likely to push past the included storage, where overage charges and plan quotas can undermine the appeal.
