Overview

Built as desktop software, jAlbum converts local media into galleries for a personal website or a jAlbum account. Its FTP client supports uploading to existing web hosting, while generated galleries do not depend on server-side scripting. That makes it a practical publishing tool for users who want control over where a gallery appears, but not a cloud-sync solution: cloud sync is not supported.

The organizer can sort photos by date and location, remove duplicates, and add tags. RAW support, face recognition, and metadata tools broaden its usefulness for managing photo collections, while the built-in editor covers cropping, sharpening, level adjustments, auto-correction, watermarks, and batch processing. These tools help prepare a gallery in the same desktop workflow, though jAlbum’s central purpose remains presenting media online.

Key features

Shape and publish albums

Hundreds of album templates, called skins, offer a wide range of starting points for gallery presentation, with customization for users who want a more individual result. Albums can be uploaded through FTP or published to a jAlbum account. The community site also describes connecting with Facebook or Twitter to share albums.

Hosting and privacy

For hosted files, jAlbum says it uses its servers in Sweden and AWS servers in Ireland and Germany, with access restricted to a few people. It says it collects account email, name, username, and certain IP addresses, and deletes personal data within 60 days after account closure. Those policies may suit users comfortable with that hosting arrangement; users who prefer to keep galleries on their own web hosting can use the FTP publishing route.

Pricing

The Free plan is free, lasts forever, and supports own-site storage, but galleries are limited to 24 objects. That is suitable for a small showcase or occasional album, not a substantial gallery. Gallery size may otherwise be constrained by computer memory.

The paid offerings divide by licensing and hosting needs, but each has custom pricing. Standard License allows non-commercial use, unlimited uploads, own-site storage, and one year of updates and support. Pro License adds commercial use, shopping cart features, unlimited uploads, own-site storage, and the same one-year update and support period. Both Standard and Pro include one year of priority email support, with replies within 24 hours on business days.

For hosted storage, Premium Account includes 10 GB, non-commercial use, a Standard license, and priority email support; Power Account provides 100 GB and commercial features; Super Account provides 300 GB, a Pro license, commercial use, and a shopping cart. The cheaper storage tier gives up capacity, while Premium is explicitly non-commercial and Super bundles the broadest storage and commercial package. Choose a license for own-site publishing and a storage account when hosted capacity is part of the workflow.

Platforms

jAlbum is primarily desktop software and supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, alongside Android, iOS, and web platforms. The desktop-first design is best suited to people preparing galleries from local media, not those seeking a phone-centered synchronized library.

Who it's for

Photographers and artists can use jAlbum to organize, edit, and present selected work; businesses and organizations can build galleries with commercial licensing, while families can publish personal albums. Its range of skins and publishing routes is valuable when presentation and destination matter. It is less suitable for anyone who needs cloud sync or expects a generous free gallery allowance.

Pros and cons

Pros: Local organization, editing, RAW support, face recognition, and metadata tools bring useful photo workflows together.
Pros: Hundreds of skins plus FTP and jAlbum-hosted publishing give users options for design and destination.
Cons: The free license stops at 24 objects, too little for many full galleries.
Cons: Cloud sync is absent, so jAlbum is not a replacement for a synchronized photo library.
Cons: Paid plan prices are custom, making it harder to compare the cost of licensing or hosted storage upfront.

Alternatives

For a broader set of photo-management options, browse Photo Management Software. Choose Ente Photos instead if its 10 GB free tier or 50 GB Starter plan at 2.49 USD per month better fits your storage needs. PhotoPrism is worth considering for a self-hosted setup, with a free Community plan offering unlimited storage and instances. Choose Amazon Photos if 5 GB of shared free photo and video storage or the unlimited full-resolution storage in its Prime Photos benefit suits you. Lomorage is a free alternative that requires external storage. PhotoStructure offers a free Lite plan with portable libraries and duplicate and edited-copy grouping. Piwigo is another option, with a free self-hosted plan. Flickr may be a better fit for public sharing, with a free allowance of 1,000 uploads and a paid annual-billed Pro plan. Tonfotos offers a free license with the full functionality of its paid version, subject to a limit on the number of people in photos.

Verdict

Choose jAlbum if you want a desktop workflow for organizing and editing local media, then turning selected photos and videos into a designed web gallery on your own hosting or a jAlbum account. Its publishing flexibility is the main reason to choose it; the small free cap, custom pricing for paid plans, and lack of cloud sync are reasons to look elsewhere if you need a large free library or a continuously synchronized collection.
