Overview

Marmoset Viewer is a WebGL viewer for interactive 3D presentations exported from Marmoset Toolbag. It is best suited to artists and developers sharing .mview scenes online or opening them locally. It is a focused presentation option, but unsupported rendering effects and limited protection for browser-delivered artwork make it a poor fit for every scene.

Key features

Scenes are built in Toolbag and exported as optimized .mview packages for hosting or embedding. Viewer supports animated scenes, refractive materials, shadowed fog and shadow catcher objects, with real-time GPU rendering and a presentation mode. These features make it useful for showing a scene interactively; the absence of measurement tools and annotation or markup makes it less suitable for feedback workflows that depend on precise notes or measurements.

Global illumination, screen-space reflections and ambient occlusion are not supported. That limits the rendering effects available in the exported presentation, so creators relying on those effects should consider whether the result will still communicate their work. Browser delivery also means models and textures must be sent to the viewer, making robust copy protection essentially impossible. Do not choose web embedding for artwork that must be difficult to copy.

A free standalone desktop app opens .mview files locally and can be downloaded separately from Toolbag. For web distribution, packages can be uploaded to ArtStation; a third-party WordPress plugin supports uploading and embedding. Developers can also embed Viewer with its JavaScript library and embed utility.

Pricing

The Marmoset Viewer plan is free. Viewer is included with Toolbag versions 2.07 and newer, and the standalone Viewer app is free. The standalone option suits recipients who need to open .mview files locally without acquiring Toolbag; creators who need to make scenes still need the Toolbag export workflow. A 30-day trial is available. Viewer is described as a paid product with a free plan, but no paid Viewer price or separate paid tier is given.

Platforms

Viewer supports web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and opens .mview files. The maker describes Android support as less robust than support for Windows, OS X and iOS, so Android is the less dependable choice for recipients. The free standalone app provides local viewing; web support covers embedding and browser presentation.

Who it's for

Choose Viewer if you create scenes in Toolbag and want to distribute an interactive presentation through a website, ArtStation or a local .mview file. It also suits web developers who want a JavaScript embedding route. Look elsewhere if your work depends on unsupported lighting and reflection effects, needs review markup or measurement, or requires strong protection against copying.

Pros and cons

Pros

Free standalone viewing makes it possible to open .mview packages without Toolbag.
Animation, refractive materials, shadowed fog and shadow catcher objects support presentations beyond a static model view.
ArtStation uploads, a WordPress plugin and JavaScript embedding provide several routes to web distribution.

Cons

No global illumination, screen-space reflections or ambient occlusion can narrow the fidelity of exported scenes.
Browser rendering requires sending models and textures to the browser, leaving no robust copy-protection option.
No measurement or annotation tools limits its usefulness for structured review and markup.
Android support is less robust than support for Windows, OS X and iOS.

Alternatives

For a broader set of 3D creation and rendering workflows, browse 3D Rendering Software, 3D Texturing Software or Game Texture Software. If the priority is inspecting 3D models rather than presenting Toolbag exports, compare options in 3D Model Viewer Software.

Verdict

Marmoset Viewer is a strong fit for Toolbag creators who want a free way to distribute interactive .mview presentations online or locally. Its multiple embedding routes and scene presentation features are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere when unsupported rendering effects, review annotations or meaningful protection of browser-delivered artwork are essential.
