Overview

LingQ supports 52 languages and combines reading and listening with discovering words in context and personalized review. A placement test can help learners get started; Premium members can study all supported languages and as many simultaneously as they wish. The service is made by LingQ, founded in 2007 and based in West Vancouver, British Columbia.

Key features

Bring content into lessons: The LingQ Importer browser extension turns browser content into interactive lessons, and imports are supported from YouTube, Netflix, TikTok, Spotify, Apple TV, Disney+, and Amazon Prime. This is a strong fit for learners who want to study around their own interests; the five-lesson free cap makes regular importing a paid-plan use case.
Build vocabulary in context: Learners can save unfamiliar words and phrases and return to them through personalized review. The free tier’s 20-item limit is restrictive for ongoing study, while Premium removes the saved-word cap.
Study offline: Offline access is a membership feature, useful for continuing lessons without a connection. It is not included among the stated Free-plan features.
Placement and community: A placement test is available. Users can also earn points by tutoring, referring friends, and sharing Library lessons, giving community participation a role beyond individual study.

Pricing

LingQ uses a freemium model. All stated membership prices are in USD. Fees are charged upfront for the chosen duration and recur until canceled; there are no setup fees, long-term contracts, or cancellation fees. Users can cancel trial or subscription auto-renewal at any time, and upgrades or downgrades take effect immediately.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	0.00 USD per free	20 saved words and phrases, 5 imported lessons, and 1 audio playlist.
Premium	215.76 USD per year	24 Months; 40% off; unlimited saved words and imported lessons, full sentence translations, and offline access.
Premium Plus	269.99 USD per year	12 Months; 25% off; 6x audio transcription, AI voices, Advanced Lynx Chat, and AI simplified lessons.

Free is useful for sampling the approach, but its word, lesson, and playlist caps are likely to constrain a learner who imports regularly. Premium is the practical step up for unlimited vocabulary saving and imports, sentence translations, or offline study. Premium Plus costs more and is the plan for learners who want its additional transcription and AI features. Both paid prices are annual, upfront charges that recur until canceled; review the renewal terms before subscribing.

Platforms

LingQ runs on web, Android, and iOS, with browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. Its deployment spans cloud, mobile, and browser extension. That combination suits learners who want to move between browser-based content and mobile study.

Who it's for

LingQ is best for self-directed learners who already have content they want to read or listen to, especially those studying multiple languages or who value offline lessons. It is less suitable for someone who needs a generous free allowance: five imported lessons and 20 saved items are narrow limits for building a lasting library. Its stated company-size fit ranges from solo users to enterprise, though schools, business, and libraries are mentioned without team or admin details.

Pros and cons

Pro — Broad content choice: Imports from major video, audio, and streaming services let learners work with material tied to their interests.
Pro — Wide language coverage: 52 languages are supported, and Premium allows simultaneous study across all of them.
Pro — Clear free caps and cancellation terms: The free limits are explicit, while paid memberships can be canceled without long-term contracts or cancellation fees.
Con — The free tier is tightly capped: Twenty saved items and five imported lessons make it a trial of the workflow rather than an open-ended study option.
Con — Paid plans require upfront annual payment: The listed recurring membership prices are billed for the selected duration, so they are less suited to learners seeking month-to-month pricing.

Verdict

Choose LingQ if you want to build language study around imported real-world material, save vocabulary from it, and potentially study across a broad range of languages. Its key advantage is the combination of content importing and contextual review; its main drawback is that meaningful ongoing use pushes you toward an upfront annual membership. If you want a roomy free tier or month-to-month pricing, look elsewhere.
