Overview

Logseq centers on information kept on the user’s device. The maker says users own their local data and that the product works fully on-device; offline access supports that approach. The result is a good fit for people who want a knowledge system that does not depend on a cloud connection, though cross-device syncing is a separate service.

The platform covers knowledge management, task management, PDF annotation and collaboration. It supports Markdown and Org-mode files, giving users text-based formats for their notes, while block references, backlinks, linked references and queries connect information and help bring related material back into view.

Key features

Connected notes and flexible workflows

Logseq’s linking tools work at the block level as well as across notes. That makes it useful for readers who want to connect small pieces of information, revisit where they are referenced and query a larger collection. Zotero is the named integration, a relevant addition for academic workflows. The product also supports task management and PDF annotation, so it can serve work beyond ordinary note capture.

Customization and collaboration

The plugin and theme ecosystem—more than 150 plugins and 30 or more themes according to the homepage—offers room to adapt the workspace. Note sharing and real-time collaboration are also part of the product, but they should not be treated as mature shared-workspace guarantees: the public-beta Sync service does not support multiple people working in the same graph at once. The DB version is in beta, while the new mobile app and RTC features are in alpha, and the maker warns that data loss is possible.

Pricing

The Free plan is free forever for personal use. It is the sensible starting point for an individual who wants Logseq’s local knowledge workflows without paying for Sync.

Logseq Sync Backer costs 5.00 USD per month as a recurring monthly donation and includes Sync beta access. Logseq Sync Sponsor costs 15.00 USD per month on the same recurring-donation basis, adds Sync beta access and makes Whiteboards available to Sponsors. These are not conventional feature-tier promises: anyone paying for Sync should weigh beta status and the data-loss warning, and neither tier enables multiple people to use one graph simultaneously.

Platforms

Logseq supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Mobile apps are available for iOS and Android, and the product supports offline access. Encrypted file syncing across devices is provided through Logseq Sync; its beta limitation makes it a better fit for an individual’s devices than a shared graph used by a team.

Who it's for

Students, academics and writers are natural fits for linked research notes, PDF annotation and Zotero integration. Project managers and developers may value the combination of notes, queries and task management, especially if they want to customize the workspace with plugins. Logseq is less appropriate for teams that need several people editing the same graph at once, or for anyone who cannot tolerate the risk associated with beta and alpha features.

Pros and cons

Pros: Local data ownership, on-device operation and offline access suit users who prioritize control over their notes.
Pros: Markdown and Org-mode support, combined with block references, backlinks and queries, make it possible to build a connected personal knowledge base.
Pros: Task management, PDF annotation, Zotero integration and mobile apps support study and work across devices.
Cons: Sync is in public beta and cannot support multiple people using the same graph at once, limiting its usefulness for shared work.
Cons: The DB version is beta and the new mobile app and RTC features are alpha; the maker warns that data loss can occur.

Verdict

Choose Logseq if you want a customizable, local-first knowledge system that links notes and supports study and task workflows. Its open-ended linking and text-based files are compelling for an individual building a durable knowledge base. Look elsewhere if dependable real-time team editing is essential, or if beta and alpha features’ data-loss risk is unacceptable.
