Overview

LUNA is Universal Audio’s workstation for recording, producing, and mixing music. It is a strong starting point for musicians who want a free DAW with built-in smart tools, and especially relevant to Apollo owners. The free edition covers substantial core work; the decision turns on whether you need Studio’s additional production tools and whether its setup and plug-in constraints fit your workflow.

Key features

LUNA brings together tempo and instrument detection, voice control, stem separation, audio-to-MIDI, lyric transcription, and chord extraction. Some smart capabilities are limited to Studio, so Free is a useful entry point but not the whole toolkit. LUNA Play detects an instrument, sets levels, and suggests presets, a practical shortcut when the priority is capturing an idea rather than building a session from scratch.

You can use LUNA with any audio interface; Apollo is an enhancement, not a requirement. With Apollo, the workstation supports real-time tracking with UAD plug-ins, Unison preamp technology, and Accelerated Realtime Monitoring. That makes the deepest integration most compelling for existing Apollo users, while others can still use the workstation without buying UA hardware.

LUNA hosts VST3 and AU plug-ins and virtual instruments. Studio adds API, Studer, and Ampex console or tape extensions, hardware inserts, and six ARA plug-ins. Those additions give producers a concrete reason to upgrade when they need these specific tools; they are less persuasive if the free feature set already covers the job. Sessions open on macOS and Windows, but AU plug-ins will not load when a session is opened on Windows, an important limitation for mixed-platform work.

Setup has several steps: installation and authorization require a free Universal Audio account, UA Connect, iLok License Manager, and a free iLok account. A license can be activated at up to three simultaneous locations, and deauthorizing an existing activation frees one. Universal Audio also provides an online Knowledge Base and downloadable PDF manual.

Pricing

LUNA Free costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape. It is the sensible first choice for musicians who want to record and produce without a paid plan. Its trade-off is access: Studio-only smart capabilities and production additions are outside this tier.

LUNA Studio costs 199.00 USD per month. It includes 30 UAD plug-ins and instruments, six ARA plug-ins, console and tape extensions, advanced smart features, and hardware inserts. Choose it when those tools are central to your workflow; the monthly price is a substantial commitment for someone who only needs basic recording and mixing.

UAD Spark Studio costs 149.00 USD per year, billed annually. It includes LUNA Studio, 70 UAD plug-ins, and new plug-ins added regularly, making it the lower-cost paid route for users who want Studio alongside a broader plug-in collection. Its annual billing is a commitment, so it suits someone prepared to use the bundle over the year rather than a short-term need. The free plan has unlimited tracks, and the license permits up to three active locations.

Platforms

LUNA supports macOS Big Sur 11 through Tahoe 26 and 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, with 600 MB of available system storage required. Cross-platform sessions are useful for teams or individuals working across operating systems, but AU plug-in compatibility does not carry over to Windows sessions. The workstation supports VST3 and AU plug-ins; check that your plug-in format matches the system where a session will be opened.

Who it's for

LUNA is best for musicians seeking a capable free workstation, particularly those who value its idea-capture tools or already own Apollo hardware. Producers who need API, Studer, or Ampex extensions, hardware inserts, or ARA plug-ins have a clear reason to consider Studio. It is a weaker fit for anyone whose cross-platform sessions depend on AU plug-ins loading on Windows, or who wants to avoid the multiple-account and licensing setup.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape, giving musicians room to work without a paid plan.
Pros: Any audio interface works, while Apollo users gain real-time UAD tracking, Unison, and Accelerated Realtime Monitoring.
Pros: Sessions can move between macOS and Windows, and the license supports three simultaneous locations.
Cons: Some smart tools and the console, tape, hardware-insert, and ARA additions require Studio.
Cons: AU plug-ins will not load in sessions opened on Windows, limiting mixed-system workflows.
Cons: Installation and authorization involve a Universal Audio account, UA Connect, iLok License Manager, and an iLok account.

Alternatives

For other workstation choices, browse Digital Audio Workstations; for plug-in-focused options, see Audio Plugins or Audio Editing Software.

Airwindows Consolidated is a free, open-source DAW plug-in for Linux, macOS, and Windows, rather than a workstation. Buddi is free budgeting software, not a music-production alternative. FabFilter Total Bundle suits someone seeking 14 paid plug-ins for macOS or Windows rather than a DAW. Kilohearts Ultimate is a one-time paid collection of 10 products and Essentials, with content banks excluded. McDSP Everything Pack may suit a reader seeking access to current and future McDSP plug-ins with two activations; its Native Annual plan is 14.99 USD per month with an annual commitment. sonible smart:bundle is a one-time purchase of six plug-ins, including smart:limit, smart:EQ 4, smart:reverb 2, smart:comp 3, smart:deess, and smart:gate. x42-plugins offers plug-ins across Linux, macOS, and Windows, including a Whirl Speaker personal license at 19.00 USD per once. Soundtoys 5 is a 23-plug-in bundle for macOS and Windows with two activations.

Verdict

Choose LUNA if you want a free music workstation with unlimited tracks and useful smart tools, or if Apollo integration is a particular draw. Its paid tiers add meaningful production capabilities, but the Studio subscription, multi-part setup, and Windows AU limitation are good reasons to look elsewhere if you need those terms to be simpler.
