Overview

NodeBB brings topics, replies, real-time chat, groups and moderation into one platform. Members can write with a WYSIWYG editor or Markdown, follow tags and topics, and receive notifications for follows, likes and subscriptions. That combination supports ongoing discussion rather than a simple announcement board, while groups with activity feeds offer a way to organize participation around member communities.

Administrators can create unlimited administrator and moderator accounts and configure permissions for each. A public Read API and RESTful Write API support software integrations, and more than 500 plugins and themes can be installed from the control panel. These options give teams room to adapt a community, but extensions require care: third-party plugins and themes may collect data outside NodeBB's DPA.

Founded in 2014 by three developers, NodeBB, Inc. is headquartered in Canada. It offers spam-prevention integrations with Akismet, StopForumSpam and Project Honeypot. NodeBB operates a bug bounty program, but eligible testing is limited to try.nodebb.org and excludes third-party plugins.

Key features

Flexible publishing: Members can use a visual editor or Markdown, accommodating different posting preferences without limiting the community to one composition style.
Live engagement: Real-time chat and notifications for follows, likes and topic subscriptions help members keep up with activity between visits.
Groups and tags: Groups provide activity feeds; topic tags can be followed for notifications, giving members more ways to navigate active communities.
Administration and integrations: Unlimited administrator and moderator accounts with configurable permissions are useful for communities with distributed staff. The Read and Write APIs provide integration routes.
Search: The bundled database engine provides basic full-text search. Solr and Elasticsearch require third-party plugins, so NodeBB is a weaker fit if advanced search is central to the community.
Privacy and consent: Registration presents users with data and rights information and requires affirmative consent. Organizations using extensions should account for the possibility that plugins or themes collect data outside NodeBB's DPA.

Pricing

NodeBB is freemium: its self-hosted software is free to download and install under GPLv3, while hosted plans start at 20.00 USD per month. A 14-day trial is offered. Self-hosting avoids a hosting-plan charge but puts deployment on the organization's own server; NodeBB provides installation guides for Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as cloud options including Docker.

Plan	Price	Includes
Self-hosted	Free	Free to download and install under GPLv3; install on your own server; open-source software.
Starter	20.00 USD per month	50,000 pageviews, 5gb storage, unlimited staff users, weekly backups, SSL, custom plugins, custom domain and priority support.
Hamlet	100.00 USD per month	500,000 pageviews, 20gb storage, unlimited staff users, daily backups, SSL, custom plugins, custom domain and priority support.
Village	250.00 USD per month	2,000,000 pageviews, 100gb storage, unlimited staff users, daily backups, SSL, custom plugins, custom domain and priority support.
City	750.00 USD per month	10,000,000 pageviews, 300gb storage, unlimited staff users, daily backups, SSL, custom plugins, custom domain and priority support.
Enterprise Solutions	Custom pricing	Custom integrations and feature development, theme customization, Single Sign-On, migration services, and premium hosting or self-hosting.

The hosted tiers keep unlimited staff users, SSL, custom plugins, a custom domain and priority support throughout. The meaningful trade-offs are monthly pageview and storage allowances: Starter's 50,000 pageviews and 5gb storage suit smaller communities, while larger audiences or heavier content needs require a higher allowance. Starter also has weekly rather than daily backups; Hamlet and above include daily backups. Enterprise Solutions is for organizations seeking implementation or customization services beyond the standard tiers, with custom pricing.

Platforms

NodeBB supports web, API, Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted deployments. Its installation documentation covers Linux distributions, macOS and Windows, along with cloud deployment options including Docker. The range makes it relevant to teams with their own infrastructure, as well as those choosing hosted service.

Who it's for

NodeBB is a strong fit for organizations that want a dedicated discussion space for a brand community or product support, with moderation, groups, tags and multiple staff roles. It is particularly compelling for teams that value deployment choice or need APIs and extensions to integrate a forum into a broader software setup. Teams that depend on advanced search should budget for third-party plugins, and those using extensions should consider the data and security implications.

Pros and cons

Pro: Self-hosting is free under GPLv3, while hosted plans preserve unlimited staff users and include SSL, custom domains and priority support.
Pro: Real-time chat, notifications, groups, tags and moderation make this more than a basic topic-and-reply forum.
Pro: Public Read and RESTful Write APIs, plus more than 500 installable plugins and themes, provide integration and customization options.
Con: The bundled search is basic; Solr and Elasticsearch depend on third-party plugins.
Con: Hosted pageview and storage allowances vary by plan, and Starter has weekly rather than daily backups.
Con: Third-party plugins and themes may collect data outside NodeBB's DPA, and the bug bounty excludes them.

Alternatives

Discourse is worth considering for teams that prefer another freemium, open-source discussion platform; its Free plan includes unlimited members, two staff seats and 500k monthly page views. Whaller may suit groups seeking a free entry tier with defined organizational limits: its Standard plan allows 100 members, five spheres and one organization.

Octo is a possible alternative for smaller communities: its Free / Start plan is free forever for 0–99 users and includes one admin and 10 GB disk space. HuddleSpot offers a free Starter plan capped at 100 members and five spaces or channels, with discussions, posts and a basic analytics dashboard.

Circle is a paid alternative with a Professional plan at 89.00 USD per month on annual billing, including unlimited members, three admins, 10 moderators and 20 spaces. HumHub is another freemium option, with a self-hosted AGPLv3 Community Edition and access to a module marketplace.

Heartbeat is a paid alternative with a Build plan at 49.00 USD per month for 350 members, alongside channels, courses, events, documents and landing pages. Reddit is a freemium option for communities considering a social-networking platform instead.

Verdict

Choose NodeBB if you need a configurable forum with capable community tools and want to decide between self-hosting and hosted service. Its strongest case is the combination of deployment choice, unlimited staff roles and active discussion features; look elsewhere or budget for plugins if advanced search is essential, and scrutinize extensions when privacy and security responsibilities are a priority.
