Overview

MATLAB Grader is an online workspace for building MATLAB coding assignments and automatically assessing student submissions. It is strongest for instructors who want to connect coding exercises to course delivery and feedback; it is a weaker fit when similarity scoring is part of the grading workflow.

Its browser-based authoring means instructors do not need to install or maintain a separate authoring environment. Problem prompts can combine text, images, hyperlinks, and LaTeX, a practical advantage for assignments that need technical context or notation.

Key features

Assignment creation and assessment

Instructors can use pass/fail or weighted grading, add contextual feedback, and review attempt histories. Analytics about concepts students struggle with can help identify where a class needs further instruction. That combination supports both routine grading and course-level diagnosis, although MATLAB Grader does not include built-in similarity scoring. Instructors can export solutions to use with a similarity engine of their choice.

MATLAB Online and LMS connections

Learners can work in MATLAB Online, with submissions and results syncing back to MATLAB Grader without an extra login step. The service integrates with Open edX, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, Sakai, and other LMS platforms that support LTI Advantage. MathWorks certifies it for LTI 1.3, LTI Advantage, Names and Roles Provisioning Services 2.0, and Assignment and Grade Services 2.0.

LMS integration has a meaningful eligibility condition: it requires a qualifying academic license, and learners must be enrolled students covered by that license. For LMS use, MathWorks says it needs the user's role and LMS-assigned LTI user ID at minimum, rather than personally identifiable information. Its SOC 3 report covers the MATLAB Grader LTI Service as part of audited cloud applications for January 1 through December 31, 2025. MathWorks also says its privacy practices comply with applicable laws including GDPR and CCPA, and that it does not sell or rent personal information.

Product documentation, community answers, and technical support contact options are available to users. MATLAB Grader supports MATLAB and Python, though its stated teaching purpose centers on MATLAB assignments.

Pricing

The MATLAB Grader plan costs 0.00 USD per free. The free offer is for users with a MATLAB license current under maintenance, so it is not an unconditional free service for every instructor. The LMS integration condition is separate and stricter: users need a qualifying academic license, and participating learners must be covered by it. No paid MATLAB Grader tier is given; readers who cannot meet the free-plan conditions should confirm eligibility before planning a course around it.

Platforms

MATLAB Grader is available on Linux, macOS, Windows, and the web. Its browser-based authoring and MATLAB Online workflow make it suited to courses where instructors and students need to work without maintaining a dedicated local authoring setup.

Who it's for

This is a good fit for instructors teaching MATLAB who want to build coding assignments, automate assessment, provide feedback, and connect results to an LMS. It is especially compelling when students already use MATLAB Online and the institution meets the license requirements for LMS integration. Instructors who require built-in code similarity checks, or whose students are not covered by the necessary academic license, should look elsewhere or plan a separate similarity-scoring workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros: Browser-based authoring avoids a separate installation and maintenance burden for instructors.
Pros: Pass/fail and weighted grading, contextual feedback, attempt histories, and class-level analytics support several stages of assessment and follow-up.
Pros: MATLAB Online syncing and broad LTI-based LMS integration reduce friction in course delivery when licensing conditions are met.
Cons: LMS use depends on qualifying academic licensing and learner coverage, limiting its usefulness for courses outside those terms.
Cons: There is no built-in similarity scoring, so instructors need another engine if comparing solutions is required.
Cons: The free plan requires a MATLAB license current under maintenance, which makes the zero price conditional.

Alternatives

For broader requirements-management needs rather than coding-assignment grading, compare ReqView, Innoslate, NETVIBES, DocSheets, RequirementONE, OSRMT, Siemens Polarion REQUIREMENTS, or Doorstop. ReqView offers a free tier limited to one document, 150 objects per document, and one custom attribute, while its Pro plan costs 440.00 EUR per year per user. Innoslate offers a free Academia plan for educators and students who sign up with an .edu account. OSRMT is free and can be used or distributed at no cost, but requires hardware to run. Doorstop is open source and free, with Python and a version control system required. These products address requirements work rather than MATLAB assignment assessment, so they are alternatives when that is the primary need, not direct replacements for MATLAB Grader.

Browse Automated Grading Software for more tools centered on assessment. The Requirements Management Software, C and C++ Static Analysis Tools, Static Analysis Tools, Electrical Design Software, and Deep Learning Software lists cover other software categories represented by the listed alternatives.

Verdict

Choose MATLAB Grader if you teach MATLAB and want browser-based assignment authoring, automatic assessment, feedback, and LMS delivery in one workflow. Its conditional free plan and course-oriented integrations make it a practical choice for eligible institutions. Look elsewhere or add another tool if similarity scoring is essential, or if your course cannot meet the academic-license requirements for LMS use.
