Overview

VICE is a free emulator suite for running software written for classic Commodore 8-bit computers. It is best suited to people who want more than a C64 emulator, provided they are comfortable with uneven support across the machine family.

Its strongest case is the combination of broad Commodore coverage and attention to hardware timing. The trade-off is that several of its less familiar systems remain under construction, so breadth does not mean equally dependable emulation on every machine.

Key features

VICE covers eight systems: C64, C64DTV, C128, VIC20, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64 and CBM-II. That range makes it a useful single package for Commodore software across several generations, but the C64 and VIC20 are the safer choices for users who need the most capable emulators. C64DTV, C128, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64 and CBM-II are still under construction and may be less capable.

The emulators provide 6502/6510 processor support, including documented and undocumented opcodes, and aim to reproduce chip timing precisely. For C64 software that relies on hardware behavior, VICE also models VIC-II video and SID sound, including synchronization, ring modulation and filters. This emphasis is valuable for programs sensitive to timing and audiovisual behavior, though VICE's stated goal is an aim, not a guarantee of perfect reproduction.

Disk support accommodates up to four external drives, using disk images, filesystem directories or compatible real devices. Joystick input can come from the keyboard or a joystick attached to the host. Netplay and shaders/upscaling are supported; arcade emulation is not, and a BIOS is required.

A stable binary monitor interface connects VICE to third-party projects such as C64 Studio and debugger tools. That makes it more useful to users who want to work with development or debugging tools alongside emulation, rather than only launch old programs.

Pricing

VICE costs 0.00 USD per free. The free software is distributed under GNU GPL version 2 or, at the recipient's option, any later version; there is no free trial because the software is free. There are no paid tiers or plan-based feature trade-offs to weigh.

The license does not come with a warranty, including implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. The developers work on VICE in their spare time, direct support requests and bug reports to SourceForge trackers, and also accept reports by email. They ask users to consult the manual before contacting them, so users who need dedicated or guaranteed support should look elsewhere.

Platforms

VICE supports Android, Linux, macOS and Windows. Windows downloads include 64-bit GTK3 and SDL2 builds; macOS builds are available for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and require macOS 12.0 or later. Android binaries are linked separately, while users of other Unix-based systems are directed to the Unix downloads.

Who it's for

VICE fits people who want to run software for classic Commodore 8-bit computers, especially C64 and VIC20 users who value timing, sound, video and disk support. Its eight-system scope also suits users who want one package for multiple Commodore machines. It is a less certain choice when a particular program depends on one of the six emulators still under construction, or when dependable, staffed support is essential.

Pros and cons

Pros: Eight Commodore systems in one package make VICE more versatile than a single-machine emulator.
Pros: Processor timing, C64 VIC-II and SID emulation, and flexible disk support address details that matter to software designed around original hardware.
Pros: Free software under GPL v2 or later is available across desktop platforms and Android.
Cons: Six emulators remain under construction, limiting confidence for users focused on those systems.
Cons: The software is provided without warranty, and the spare-time development team asks users to consult the manual before seeking support.
Cons: A BIOS is required, and VICE does not support arcade emulation.

Alternatives

For a Windows-only Commodore option, C64 Forever has a free Express Edition and a maker focused on Commodore and Amiga software; choose it if that Windows-focused offering better suits your setup. Breadbin466 is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows, with an MIT-licensed emulator, though its Commodore ROM images are not covered by that license. VirtualC64 is free and open source for macOS and web, making it a fit for those platforms.

Power64 is a macOS alternative with a free trial and a 32.00 USD per once single-user registration; unregistered sessions are limited to 10 minutes, so it may suit someone willing to pay for registration. Frodo is a free option for Linux, macOS and Windows. Z64K is also free for Linux, macOS and Windows, while emudore supports Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Buddi is free budgeting software, not an emulator alternative.

Verdict

Choose VICE if you want free access to a broad set of Commodore 8-bit systems and value C64 hardware detail, disk flexibility and development-tool integration. Look elsewhere if you need mature emulation for C64DTV, C128, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64 or CBM-II, or if your work depends on formal support or a warranty.
