Overview

Metaplay combines a server-authoritative C# game server with a Unity client library and shared client-server logic. The result is a unified foundation for player accounts, cloud data, multiplayer and operational tools, rather than a narrow service for one game-system need. Studios can run it on Metaplay Cloud, their own AWS infrastructure, another Kubernetes cluster or on-premises; that flexibility is valuable, though self-hosting shifts infrastructure work to the studio.

The LiveOps dashboard covers player segmentation, A/B testing, over-the-air configuration updates, events, economy management and player support. The SDK adds guilds, social features, leaderboards, leagues and asynchronous matchmaking. Synchronous matchmaking is still in active development, so teams requiring that capability should not assume it is a finished part of the package.

Key features

Operations and integrations

Analytics can be exported to BigQuery and S3. Purchase validation covers Google Play, the App Store and Steam, while sign-in options include Google, Apple, Facebook, Steam and custom web login. These integrations make Metaplay relevant to teams operating across storefronts and identity providers, without establishing support for providers beyond those named.

Metaplay also provides Docs and Portal MCP servers for AI tools. They are read-only by default and respect existing permissions, a useful boundary for teams exploring AI-assisted access to documentation and portal data. Security features include TLS-encrypted client-server communication, cloud-provider encryption at rest, role-based access controls and audit logs. The maker says it provides GDPR data export and deletion tools and works with enterprise customers on SOC 2 and other certifications.

Hosting and regional limits

Managed Metaplay Cloud supports single-region deployments. Multi-region deployment is supported on self-hosted infrastructure, so studios with a regional architecture requirement must take on that hosting path rather than rely on managed Cloud. The SDK supports Unity 2020.3 LTS and later, with games for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and WebGL.

Pricing

Metaplay has a free local development option and paid hosted plans. The free plan is 0.00 USD per free and includes the full SDK and local server, with no hard limits on local development. Community support is 0.00 EUR per free, billed Free, and provides Discord server access. These options suit prototyping, but neither supplies the capacity of a paid hosted environment.

Starter costs 195.00 EUR per month, billed €195/month, and includes 5 DAU and one mini environment. It is aimed at solo developers or teams of two, but the five-DAU cap makes it a narrow step beyond local development. Pre-launch costs 995.00 EUR per month, billed €995/month, and includes 100 DAU and two small environments for small teams. That is a more credible fit for a small pre-launch operation, though still a tight allowance for broader testing or an audience ramp.

Production is shown at 19852.95 EUR per month, billed €1985/month+€2.95 per 1000 monthly DAU above 5000 DAU/day. It includes the first 5000 DAU/day, two small environments, staging and scalable production environments, with unlimited DAU subject to a Fair Use Policy. The displayed price and billing formula differ, so buyers should clarify the charge before budgeting. Private Cloud has custom pricing and offers unlimited DAU and environments sized to need; it is intended for huge scale above 1m DAU.

Paid support tiers are separate plan choices: Standard support costs 1500.00 EUR per month, billed €1500/month, for weekday 09–17h coverage, next-business-day response, onboarding, portal tickets and 1:1 email support. Dedicated support costs 5000.00 EUR per month, billed €5000/month, for weekday 09–17h coverage, same-business-day response, two engineer days per month, a private Slack channel and onboarding. The Critical Incident Response add-on costs 5000.00 EUR per month, billed + €5000/month, and adds 24/7 availability with a one-hour response SLA to paid support. These higher support costs make most sense when response commitments or engineering assistance are operational requirements, not merely conveniences.

Platforms

Metaplay supports Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux and WebGL Unity games, and its broader platform availability includes API, web and self-hosted use. That combination fits studios seeking a Unity-centered game backend while retaining multiple deployment options. The SDK's Unity 2020.3 LTS-and-later requirement may constrain teams tied to older Unity versions.

Who it's for

Metaplay is best suited to ambitious studios building server-authoritative games, from prototype through launch, and teams operating multiple titles. It is especially compelling when one platform for player accounts, multiplayer, LiveOps and hosting control is more important than minimizing early hosted capacity costs. Small teams can start locally, but studios expecting meaningful player activity should assess the low Starter and Pre-launch DAU allowances carefully.

Pros and cons

Broad game backend and LiveOps scope: accounts, cloud data, matchmaking and operational controls sit alongside social features, leaderboards and leagues.
Flexible infrastructure choices: managed Cloud, AWS, Kubernetes and on-premises options let studios choose who operates the infrastructure.
Self-hosting is required for multi-region: managed Cloud's single-region limit rules it out for teams that need multiple regions without managing their own infrastructure.
Early hosted capacity is restrictive: Starter includes 5 DAU and Pre-launch 100 DAU, limiting their fit for games expecting a broader audience.
Synchronous matchmaking is unfinished: teams that depend on it should account for its active-development status.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Game Backend Services, Game LiveOps Software, Game Matchmaking Software and Game Leaderboard Software.

Edgegap is a paid option with a time-limited three-hour free trial on a shared environment; consider it when that trial-based entry is a better fit. brainCloud is a freemium alternative with a free plan and trial, worth comparing if a freemium backend is your starting point. Photon Engine offers freemium access, including a development-only 20-connected-user tier with 60.0 GB monthly traffic and no CCU burst; it is a relevant comparison for a constrained development stage.

Colyseus has a free open-source plan for self-hosting on your own servers, with community support and no restrictions, making it an option for teams that want that self-hosted model. Normcore has a free Public plan with unlimited applications, concurrent users and rooms, plus no session limits; compare it when those stated allowances are central. PlayFab offers a free-to-start plan before a title passes 100K players, with 10 development-mode titles and 1,000 lifetime players per title, a different entry point for teams evaluating player thresholds.

AccelByte Gaming Services offers free Public Cloud Foundations while building, with usage fees as players arrive; that model may suit teams prioritizing a free build phase. Beamable is a paid alternative with a 90-day free trial, including 12.5M API calls, 1,000 MAU and three microservices, useful to compare when a time-limited trial with those quotas suits evaluation.

Verdict

Choose Metaplay if you are building a server-authoritative Unity game and want backend, multiplayer and LiveOps capabilities with the option to self-host. Its strongest case is the breadth of systems and hosting paths in one platform; look elsewhere if you need multi-region managed hosting or meaningful player capacity at the smallest paid tiers.
