Overview

Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant for people who want chat, search and image tools alongside Microsoft 365 apps. It suits individuals and households already using Microsoft software, but its shared plans do not share AI access. The right plan depends on how often you use Copilot and how many people need it.

Key features

Chat and web search: Copilot supports web search, file uploads and app integrations. Free access is limited by capacity and usage; paid plans raise chat usage, though the tiers still have limits. That makes the free plan a sensible starting point, not a dependable choice for heavy use.
Visual and image AI: Copilot can generate images, and paid plans increase image-creation usage. Screen- or camera-based assistance also has higher, extensive or highest usage depending on the plan. These graduated allowances give frequent users a reason to pay, but do not make the tiers interchangeable.
Audio and agents: AI-generated audio is English-only, with usage levels varying by plan. Premium includes limited agentic AI usage, while Pro offers the highest usage. Copilot also supports AI bot generation.
Microsoft 365 apps and storage: Plans include Copilot, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, Defender and Teams. Personal plans also support secure use of Copilot with work files in select apps. This bundle is most useful if those apps are already part of your routine; it is less compelling if you only want an assistant.

Pricing

Copilot has a free tier and four annual or monthly Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Paid plans renew automatically unless canceled in your Microsoft account, so the quoted annual prices are recurring commitments rather than one-off purchases.

Free — 0.00 USD per free: Limited access subject to capacity and usage limits. It is the lowest-risk way to try Copilot, but the caps make it a poor fit for regular, high-volume use.
Microsoft 365 Personal — 99.99 USD per year: One person, 1 TB of cloud storage and sign-in on five devices at once, including PCs, Macs, phones and tablets. It includes a one-month free trial. Choose it when one person wants the Microsoft 365 bundle and increased Copilot usage.
Microsoft 365 Family — 129.99 USD per year: One to six people, up to 6 TB of storage at 1 TB per person, and five devices per person. The subscription owner alone gets Copilot; other members share the storage and other plan benefits, not the AI access. It is a practical household bundle when one person needs Copilot, but not a multi-user AI subscription.
Microsoft 365 Premium — 199.99 USD per year: Up to six people and up to 6 TB of storage, with extensive Copilot usage and access to features exclusive to Premium and Pro. A one-month free trial is offered. It fits households that want the broader bundle and substantial AI access for the owner; the same owner-only rule still applies.
Microsoft 365 Pro — 99.99 USD per month: Up to six people, up to 6 TB of storage and the highest Copilot usage, including the highest agentic AI usage. It is monthly billing only, making it the most expensive option here for a full year. Consider it only if the top usage level matters enough to justify that recurring cost.

Across paid plans, AI features are limited to the subscription owner and usage limits apply. Family size therefore does not translate into multiple Copilot users.

Platforms

Copilot is available on the web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, with mobile apps supported. Microsoft 365 Personal covers PCs, Macs, phones and tablets, and allows one person to sign in on five devices at once.

Who it's for

Copilot is a strong fit for an individual who already uses Microsoft 365 and wants AI access, productivity apps and cloud storage under one subscription. A household can get good use from Family or Premium if one person is the main AI user and others chiefly need the shared apps and storage. If several people need AI, the owner-only restriction is a decisive drawback. The free tier suits occasional use; frequent users should weigh its capacity limits against the recurring cost of paid plans.

Pros and cons

Pro: Paid plans bundle Copilot with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, Defender and Teams, which can make a single subscription useful beyond AI.
Pro: Personal and household options include substantial cloud storage, with up to 6 TB shared across six people on Family and Premium.
Pro: Web, desktop and mobile availability makes Copilot accessible across common device types.
Con: Family and Premium allow several people to share the plan, but only the subscription owner can use Copilot.
Con: AI usage limits remain on paid plans, and the highest-usage Pro plan costs 99.99 USD per month.
Con: AI-generated audio is English-only, limiting its usefulness for other languages.

Alternatives

If the priority is building AI agents or chatbots rather than using an assistant with Microsoft 365, compare the AI Agent Platforms and AI Agent Builders categories. For a broader assistant comparison, see AI chatbots and assistants or AI Personal Assistants; chatbot projects also have a dedicated Chatbot Builders category.

Flowise is worth considering when you want a freemium, self-hostable flow and assistant builder: its free plan includes 2 Flows & Assistants and 100 Predictions / month. Camunda is another freemium option with a free self-managed development plan for local development and testing. Houston may suit a small personal workspace: its free plan supports up to three people and includes 1,000+ integrations.

For workflow building, Retool has a free plan and a Team plan at 10.00 USD per month, billed at $10/mo per builder and $5/mo per internal user. Vellum offers a free starting tier and a Mighty plan at 30.00 USD per month. Developers looking for an open-source framework can consider Google Agent Development Kit; model and cloud service usage may require separate access or billing. Workato Agentic is an alternative with a free tier and a Pro plan at 75.00 USD per month. Floatbot AI is a paid alternative with a free trial.

Verdict

Choose Microsoft Copilot if you want an assistant bundled with Microsoft 365 apps and storage, and one subscription owner will handle the AI use. Its main advantage is that broad productivity bundle; look elsewhere if multiple people need their own Copilot access or if you want an assistant without a recurring Microsoft 365 subscription.
