Overview

Referent puts agents to work across intake, matters, email, deadlines, billing preparation and follow-ups, with lawyers retaining control of sensitive steps. The distinction matters: it is designed to reduce operational work, not to replace legal judgment or serve as an accounting system. AI Lawtech Sp. z o.o., which makes Referent, has been building AI legal technology since 2022.

Access is currently private beta or invitation-only, which limits how readily a firm can adopt it. The product is aimed at smaller practices, not firms seeking a broadly scoped system for larger teams.

Key features

Intake and matter administration

The intake workflow screens inquiries, opens matters and prepares engagement materials for lawyer approval; intake forms are supported. This links early client contact to follow-on administrative work, while leaving the decision to proceed and client-facing engagement steps with the lawyer.

Email and voice

Once an inbox is connected, Referent files emails, attachments and context to the appropriate matter. That can reduce manual filing, though firms need to connect an inbox for the workflow to operate. Users can also direct the practice by voice and have agents perform the resulting work, offering another way to delegate routine tasks.

Approvals, integrations and data safeguards

Client-facing or high-risk actions require explicit lawyer approval, and every action is recorded in an audit trail. This gives lawyers a review point and a record of agent activity rather than unrestricted automation. Referent connects with Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive; Outlook and Microsoft 365 are marked as coming soon, so firms reliant on those integrations should account for that readiness gap.

An MCP server connects Referent with ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Hermes, Gemini, OpenClaw and other MCP-compatible apps. Data is hosted on Google Cloud Platform with US and EU regional residency, AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, encrypted backups and per-firm workspace isolation. Referent says it does not train AI models on client or matter data and has zero-retention, no-training agreements with its model providers. Customers can export data, and Referent says deletion removes it without shadow copies or training archives. SOC 2 and ISO 27001 are in preparation, not certifications currently held.

Mobile apps

iPhone and Android apps let users review agent work, approve actions and check matters. They extend oversight to mobile devices, rather than suggesting that every practice-management task must be handled at a desk.

Pricing

Referent uses a freemium model. Its Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, requires no credit card and includes AI usage, intake forms and a mobile app. That makes it possible to start without a paid commitment, but the plan's published terms do not give a seat or usage quota to weigh against a firm's workload.

A free trial is also offered. No paid plan or paid price is given, so firms that outgrow the free option should expect custom pricing rather than assume a particular upgrade cost. The free plan is the natural starting point for a solo lawyer assessing the workflow; a firm should establish access and commercial terms before relying on it for broader deployment.

Platforms

Referent runs on web, Android and iOS. The mobile apps support review, approvals and matter checks. Its stated Google integrations are available, while Outlook and Microsoft 365 remain marked as coming soon.

Who it's for

Referent is best suited to solo lawyers and small firms that want agents to take on routine practice administration while keeping a lawyer in charge of sensitive actions. It is a weaker fit for firms needing an accounting system, immediate Outlook or Microsoft 365 integration, or access beyond an invitation-only beta.

Pros and cons

Pro: Agents cover several linked workflows, from screening inquiries to matter email and follow-ups, reducing the need to treat each as a separate task.
Pro: Explicit approval for client-facing or high-risk actions, paired with an audit trail, keeps consequential work under lawyer oversight.
Pro: The free plan includes AI usage without a credit card, plus intake forms and a mobile app, lowering the barrier to trying the core approach.
Con: Private beta or invitation-only access makes adoption uncertain for firms that need a system they can deploy immediately.
Con: Outlook and Microsoft 365 are not ready integrations, limiting suitability for practices built around Microsoft's tools.
Con: It is not an accounting system, so firms need another solution for accounting rather than treating billing preparation as a substitute.
Con: SOC 2 and ISO 27001 are still in preparation, which may matter to firms requiring those certifications.

Alternatives

For a broader directory of options, browse Legal CRM Software. Choose CosmoLex instead if trust accounting, ledgers, time tracking and invoicing, or online payments matter more than Referent's agent-led workflows; its Launch plan is 49.00 USD per month, billed monthly, per user per month. Lawmatics is a paid alternative with client intake, lead management, calendaring and custom forms on Essential, which includes 500 contacts; it is worth considering when lead management and intake are the priority.

Nexl CRM is another option, with custom pricing and a personalized demo. Senitix CRM may suit firms seeking a free CRM with defined contact, lead, deal and pipeline caps, though it is web-only. For time and expense tracking with financial and productivity reports, consider TimeSolv. Actionstep is an alternative for matter management, client intake and form management, and document management, with per-user pricing plus implementation fees.

Liteo offers a low-cost paid CRM focused on contacts, businesses and deals, while Onpipeline offers visual sales pipelines and appointment booking. Neither is presented as a law-firm practice-management replacement, so choose between them and Referent according to whether CRM pipeline work or legal matter workflows are the need.

Verdict

Referent is worth pursuing for solo lawyers and small firms that want AI agents to absorb routine administration while lawyers approve sensitive actions. The free plan and reviewable agent activity are compelling starting points; look elsewhere if you need immediate access, an accounting system, or ready Outlook and Microsoft 365 support.
