Overview

Built on Trino and hosted in the cloud, Galaxy can query data where it resides rather than requiring a central copy. It combines federation with ingestion, Iceberg maintenance and governance features, making it broader than a query engine alone. That breadth is most valuable to teams operating a distributed data estate; teams with a single source or a preference to manage their own clusters may find less reason to choose it.

Key features

Galaxy can federate data lakes and warehouses in one SQL query. Starburst names more than 50 connectors, including Amazon S3, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery and Azure Blob. That range is a practical advantage for organizations using several of those systems, since analysis need not begin with copying data into one place.

Galaxy can stream data from Kafka or batch ingest CSV, JSON and AVRO into Iceberg. LakeOps automates Iceberg compaction, snapshot expiry and orphan-file removal on a dedicated serverless engine. Those maintenance tasks can otherwise become recurring operational work, though ingestion compute is among the billable usage categories.

AIDA turns natural-language questions into governed insights through a customizable interface or MCP. Enterprise and Mission-Critical customers pay separately for AIDA token usage, so its value depends partly on whether that additional usage fits the budget. Governance and security include fine-grained RBAC and ABAC, end-to-end encryption, AI-powered data classification and private connectivity. Starburst describes Galaxy as SOC 2 Type II certified and HIPAA-ready.

Pricing

Galaxy is freemium, with usage charges determined by plan. Billable usage includes cluster compute hours, data ingestion compute and private-link data transfer, so the starting credit rate alone is not a full cost estimate.

Free: Free forever, with up to three clusters and standard execution mode for ad hoc queries. This is a bounded way to explore the service, but the execution mode and cluster cap constrain its role for broader workloads.
Pro: Starting at $0.50/credit, with flexible cluster execution modes, streaming ingest and advanced cluster management. It is the entry paid choice for teams that need those capabilities beyond the free tier.
Enterprise: Starting at $0.75/credit, adding advanced autoscaling, ABAC and SCIM, and AWS PrivateLink for data sources. AIDA token usage is billed separately. This plan better fits organizations with stronger scaling, governance or private-connectivity needs.
Mission-Critical: Starting at $1.00/credit, with elite support, advanced governance integrations and the highest uptime guarantees; AIDA token usage is billed separately. It is aimed at workloads where support and uptime assurances justify the higher starting rate.

The 30-day free trial includes Enterprise features and $500 in Starburst Galaxy compute resources. That provides a defined opportunity to assess higher-tier capabilities, but it is separate from the free tier's ongoing three-cluster limit.

Platforms

Galaxy is available through web, API and Linux platforms, and its product page lists AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure availability. The REST API runs over TLS/HTTPS; authentication tokens expire after 10 minutes, a useful security boundary that API clients must accommodate.

Who it's for

Starburst recommends Galaxy to organizations that do not yet have resources to manage complex data clusters. It is a strong fit when those teams need federated SQL across multiple sources and want ingestion or Iceberg maintenance in the same managed service. It is less suitable when a team wants self-hosting, only needs a narrow query layer, or cannot readily forecast usage-driven costs.

Pros and cons

Pro: Federated SQL across more than 50 named sources avoids requiring data copies for cross-system queries.
Pro: LakeOps automates several recurring Iceberg table-maintenance tasks on a dedicated serverless engine.
Pro: The trial includes Enterprise features and $500 in compute resources, allowing evaluation beyond the free tier's standard execution mode.
Con: Free use is limited to three clusters and standard execution for ad hoc queries, so it is not a substitute for paid flexibility.
Con: Compute, ingestion and private-link transfer are billable, and Enterprise and Mission-Critical add separate AIDA token charges; budgets must account for more than the starting credit rate.

Alternatives

Consider Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse if an unlimited-duration free plan subject to capacity limits is a better starting point. Starburst Data Platform is another Starburst option with a free tier capped at three clusters and standard ad hoc execution. Amazon SageMaker Autopilot is a paid alternative with a free trial and pay-as-you-go pricing.

Bauplan offers a free sandbox with public datasets or uploads, a CLI, SDK and API, and community support. LavaLake offers a free Core plan for a single machine with up to 16 vCPU, as well as a paid Team plan. Databricks Notebooks has a free edition with one serverless workspace and limited compute size and usage. IOMETE offers a free self-hosted, on-premises plan capped at 100 vCPUs. Google Cloud Lakehouse for Apache Iceberg is a paid option with a metadata-storage free tier of 1 GiB per month.

For broader comparisons, browse Data Lakehouse Platforms, Query Engine Software, Data Virtualization Software or Data Federation Software.

Verdict

Choose Starburst Galaxy if your organization needs to query data across sources and wants managed ingestion and Iceberg upkeep without taking on complex cluster operations. The combination is compelling for distributed data estates, but the usage-based charges and free-tier limits make it a weaker fit for buyers who need predictable costs or unrestricted execution on an ongoing free plan.
