Overview

SunVox combines a pattern-based tracker with built-in synthesizer and effect modules that can be connected into complex arrangements. That makes it a good fit for composers who want to shape sounds and write sequences in the same environment. Generative pattern effects can randomize notes or controller values and apply probability, giving rhythms and melodies variation without specifying every event.

Projects keep their composition elements in a single file, which helps avoid playback depending on old plugin versions. That portability comes with a clear trade-off: SunVox does not support third-party plugins, so users who rely on external instruments or effects should look elsewhere.

Key features

SunVox supports multitrack editing and MIDI sequencing, with MIDI input and output as well as import and export. It can also import XM and MOD files. Sample support covers 16-, 24- and 32-bit WAV, AIFF, OGG, MP3, FLAC and XI, while multitrack WAV export gives users a way to deliver separate tracks.

Supported sound systems include ASIO, DirectSound, MME, ALSA, OSS, JACK, Audiobus and IAA. On iOS, SunVox is also available as an AU instrument and effect plugin. The maker provides a free cross-platform library for developers who want to use the SunVox engine in their own applications, including paid games, and a JavaScript player for modern browsers with WebAssembly support.

Pricing

SunVox is freemium. The SunVox plan for most platforms is 0.00 USD per free; Android and iOS are exceptions. Desktop is free on most platforms, while the Android and iOS plans are described as modular synthesizer and tracker apps with MIDI import and export and multitrack WAV export. Android adds mic and line recording; iOS includes an Audio Unit Extension. Those mobile descriptions make the editions' broad capabilities clear, but users should check platform-specific availability before choosing one.

Android and iOS plan prices are custom pricing. For Android, that is more than a routine checkout caveat: the maker says Google does not allow purchases from developers registered in Russia and directs users to email for workarounds. Prior buyers can download APK files, which verify the purchase with Google at first launch. Android users should resolve access and purchase arrangements before building a workflow around the app.

Platforms

Supported platforms include Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and Windows CE. Minimum requirements include Windows 2000 on x86 or Windows 7 on x86_64, macOS 10.13, Android 4.1 and iOS 12. The maker describes the mobile apps as full-fledged versions with sound nearly identical to desktop, a useful proposition for moving between devices. The web player is a separate way to play SunVox compositions in a compatible browser, rather than a listed platform for the full composition app.

Who it's for

SunVox is strongest for electronic musicians who like tracker sequencing, want modular sound design and value projects that keep their composition elements together. MIDI import and export, XM and MOD import, and broad sample-format support help it fit into workflows that already use those materials. It is a less suitable choice for producers whose sessions depend on third-party plugins or who need a conventional plugin-centered setup.

Pros and cons

Pros: Built-in modular instruments and effects combine sound design and sequencing, while generative pattern effects offer ways to vary rhythms and melodies.
Pros: MIDI support, XM and MOD import, broad sample compatibility and multitrack WAV export cover several practical routes into and out of a project.
Pros: A single-file project approach helps preserve playback without relying on old plugin versions, and mobile editions are described as close to desktop in sound.
Cons: No third-party plugin support limits users who want to expand the sound palette with external instruments or effects.
Cons: Android purchasing restrictions create extra friction for new buyers, and mobile plan prices are custom pricing.

Alternatives

For a broader conventional DAW comparison, consider Digital Audio Workstations. Readers focused on game composition can browse Game Music Software, while those primarily editing audio can compare Audio Editing Software.

DefleMask is the more direct alternative for readers looking for a tracker, with a free legacy demo and a 14.99 USD one-time plan. MilkyTracker is a free option on Linux, macOS and Windows for readers who want a desktop tracker. LMMS is another free, open-source choice for Windows, macOS and Linux. GarageBand is worth considering for readers who want a free Apple-platform option, with up to 255 tracks on Mac and 32 on iPhone and iPad. Pro Tools and Reason are alternatives for readers comparing freemium DAWs on macOS and Windows. Bitwig Studio is a paid option with a free trial for readers who want a commercial DAW rather than SunVox's tracker-centered approach. LSDJ is another alternative to consider.

Verdict

Choose SunVox if you want tracker-based electronic composition, modular sound design and portable projects across desktop and mobile. Its strongest advantage is how much sequencing, synthesis, sample handling and MIDI work it brings together without relying on external plugins. Look elsewhere if third-party plugins are central to your setup, or if Android availability and purchasing constraints make access uncertain.
