Overview

PostHog spans product and web analytics, session replay, feature flags, event routing, and an integrated data warehouse. Bringing those functions together can help teams connect usage patterns to product decisions without assembling each capability separately. The breadth is useful, though teams that need only a narrow analytics function may find the platform broader than necessary.

PostHog was founded in San Francisco in 2020. It says it has an open-source product licensed under MIT. Its Trust Center lists SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA compliance, and says its products are covered by an independently audited SOC 2 Type II report.

Key features

Analytics and session replay

Product and web analytics include funnels, heatmaps, graphs and trends, lifecycle analysis, and user paths, alongside event tracking and API access. This gives product teams several ways to examine both overall patterns and specific conversion journeys. Session Replay records sessions from web, React Native, iOS, Android, Flutter, and other SDKs, making it relevant to teams with multiple client platforms. The main caveat is retention: free recordings last one month, while events and metadata are retained for one year on free and seven years on paid plans.

Release controls and customer data

Feature Flags target users, groups, or percentages of traffic and support phased rollouts, kill switches, multivariate variants, JSON payloads, and beta opt-ins. Those controls suit teams that want to manage releases alongside product measurement. The CDP transforms events in real time and sends them to more than 50 destinations, including webhooks, Slack, Braze, and Customer.io. The integrated warehouse can also connect external sources such as Snowflake or BigQuery, a useful combination for teams consolidating product signals with existing data.

PostHog Desktop

PostHog Desktop is a coding agent that can use product signals such as errors, support tickets, session replays, GitHub issues, Linear, and Zendesk to investigate causes and create pull requests. It is aimed at development workflows that can benefit from connecting customer and product signals to code changes, rather than teams seeking analytics alone. Desktop builds are available for macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows, and Linux packages including AppImage, .deb, and .rpm.

Pricing

Free

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly, and requires no credit card. Monthly allowances are 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings, 1M feature-flag requests, 100K exceptions, 1,500 survey responses, and 1M warehouse rows. Community support and one-year event and metadata retention are included; recordings are retained for one month. This is a substantial starting tier for evaluation or modest usage, but the quotas and short replay window matter for teams that need longer-term session analysis.

Pay-as-you-go plans

It may suit teams focused on analytics that want longer retention without moving to the broader usage plan. That plan fits teams needing more headroom and support, but usage-based billing makes spend a consideration. Slack support is available to customers spending over $2,000 per month. There is no free trial, so the free plan is the available entry point.

Platforms

PostHog supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, API, and self-hosted use. Session Replay also covers React Native and Flutter. This range makes it a credible option for teams measuring products across mobile and browser clients, as well as those seeking self-hosting.

Who it's for

PostHog is strongest for product and engineering teams that want usage analytics, replay, release controls, event routing, and warehouse capabilities in a shared platform. Its free quotas give smaller teams room to start, while seven-year paid retention suits organizations that need a longer event history. It is less suitable for buyers who require long free replay retention or a fixed paid price before estimating their usage.

Pros and cons

Broad product toolkit: analytics, replay, flags, CDP, and a warehouse sit in one platform, reducing the need to combine separate product-data tools.
Useful release controls: targeting, phased rollouts, and kill switches connect feature management to product measurement.
Meaningful free allowances: the free tier covers several product areas, but recording retention is only one month and each area has a quota.
Longer paid retention: events and metadata are retained for seven years on paid plans, though the listed plans use usage-based pricing rather than a stated fixed price.
Support scales with spend: free users receive community support; paid usage includes email support, while Slack support requires spending over $2,000 per month.

Alternatives

For a session-replay-led comparison, Fullstory has a free plan with 30,000 sessions, 10 user seats, 5,000 server-side events, and one-year session replay and product analytics retention. Choose it when those stated caps and longer replay retention matter more than PostHog's wider set of product, release, and data tools.

Pendo Analytics offers a free plan with 500 monthly active users, product analytics, in-app guides, and unlimited web and mobile app keys. It is a fit when that MAU-based allowance and in-app guides are the priority.

LogRocket is a paid option with a free trial and a Core plan covering session replays, clickmaps, heatmaps, rage-click maps, analytics, errors, and logs. Consider it when that replay-and-error toolset is the focus.

Gainsight PX is a paid alternative with a free trial; its PX Essentials plan includes 1K events per MAU per month, one product tag plus up to three additional tags, and 36-month data retention. It may fit buyers whose stated event allowance and retention terms align better with their needs.

Kometrics has a free plan while tracked MRR is under $1,000, with every feature included, and a 19.00 USD per month plan billed at $19 a month. It is worth considering when that revenue threshold and stated monthly price are a better match than usage-based pricing.

Userpilot is a paid product with a free trial; its Starter plan is 299.00 USD per month and includes up to 2,000 MAU, 10 segments, three seats, and one-year data retention. Choose it when those explicit seat and MAU limits suit the team.

ProfitWell Metrics offers free subscription analytics with data updates every 3–6 hours. It is a narrower alternative when subscription analytics is the main requirement.

Usermaven is a paid option with a free trial; its Growth plan is 84.00 USD per month, with annual billing offering 15% off charged upfront, and starts at 250,000 events per month, three users, three workspaces, and five years of retention. Consider it when those stated entry limits and retention terms are a closer fit.
