Overview

Pro Tools combines MIDI sequencing, virtual instruments, samples and arrangement tools with detailed audio editing and mixing. It can record up to 256 simultaneous audio inputs, and provides loop and punch-in recording plus playlist comping. Editing options range from Slip, Grid, Shuffle and Spot modes to Elastic Audio, clip gain, pitch manipulation and audio-to-MIDI conversion.

Automation, flexible routing, folder tracks and mixing plugins support complex sessions; spatial rendering covers Dolby Atmos and Audio Vivid. Cloud collaboration, third-party plugins and noise reduction broaden its usefulness, while ARA 2 integrations connect it with plugins from Acon Digital, Celemony, iZotope, Steinberg, Synchro Arts, Sound Radix and Waves.

Active subscribers and users on perpetual upgrade plans receive Melodyne essential, RX 11 Spectral Editor, Acoustica Essentials, DynAssist Lite, RePitch Elements, SpectraLayers Go and WaveLab Go. That bundle adds useful specialist tools, but access depends on an active subscription or upgrade plan.

Key features

Recording and editing: Comping and multiple recording methods suit detailed takes, while the 256-input ceiling gives large recording setups substantial capacity. The range of editing modes and pitch tools also supports precise work after recording.
Music production and mixing: MIDI sequencing, instruments, samples and arrangement features make it more than an audio editor. Routing, automation and spatial rendering give mixing-focused users room to build complex sessions.
Audio post: Studio and Ultimate add video tracks and timecode for frame-accurate scoring, dialogue editing and sound-to-picture work. Intro and Artist do not include those video workflows, so they are a poor fit for users who need picture synchronization within the workstation.

Pricing

Pro Tools is freemium, with a free Intro option and a 30-day trial. Paid monthly subscriptions are billed monthly; the listed annual and perpetual upgrade prices offer different payment and license terms.

Intro: Free forever and aimed at casual creators, with up to 8 audio tracks, 8 instrument tracks and 8 MIDI tracks. It is a useful entry point, but those caps leave little headroom for larger arrangements.
Artist: $9.99 USD per month, with 32 audio tracks, 64 MIDI tracks and 110+ instruments and effects. It suits smaller music projects; the lower ceiling and absence of the video features described for Studio and Ultimate limit its appeal for bigger sessions and post work. Annual pricing is $99, and a perpetual upgrade plan is $69.
Studio: $34.99 USD per month, with 512 audio tracks, 1,024 MIDI tracks, 130+ instruments and effects, immersive mixing and 1 video track. It is the practical step up for demanding music sessions and modest video work, but has far fewer video tracks than Ultimate. Annual pricing is $299, and a perpetual upgrade plan is $199.
Ultimate: $99.00 USD per month, with 2,048 audio tracks, 1,024 MIDI tracks, 130+ instruments and effects, 64 video tracks, video editing and full audio-post workflows. This is the tier for substantial sound-to-picture work; music producers who do not need that capacity may find Studio the more proportionate choice. Annual pricing is $599, and a perpetual upgrade plan is $499.

Education pricing is listed as $9.99 annual-paid-monthly or $99 annually for Studio Education, with a $99 perpetual upgrade plan. Ultimate Education annual pricing is $299. Existing annual-paid-monthly Studio subscriptions renew at $34.99, while that subscription is no longer sold new. New annual-paid-monthly subscriptions have not been sold since January 1, 2023; regular paid-upfront annual renewal prices are unaffected by the stated price adjustments. Perpetual upgrade plans renew existing perpetual licenses or update expired ones, rather than serving as a general new license price.

Platforms

Pro Tools runs on Windows and macOS. Minimum requirements include 16 GB of RAM, 15 GB of free installation space and an internet connection for installation and activation. Supported operating systems include macOS Tahoe 26.3.x, Sequoia 15.7.x and Sonoma 14.8.x, plus Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. Check those requirements before choosing it, particularly for older systems. Support is available through the community; users with an active support contract, subscription or Avid Support Code can also create a case or call Avid.

Who it's for

Pro Tools is a strong fit for producers and studios that need extensive recording, editing and mixing tools, or for audio-post professionals who can use Studio or Ultimate's video and timecode workflows. Intro suits casual creators willing to work within tight track caps. Artist is a more capable starting point for smaller music sessions. Users who need neither high track capacity nor advanced audio-post features may be paying for more workstation than their projects require.

Pros and cons

Pro: High track limits in Studio and Ultimate support sessions far beyond Intro's and Artist's modest caps.
Pro: Recording, MIDI, detailed editing, mixing and spatial rendering bring music production and audio post into one workstation.
Pro: Studio and Ultimate include video tracks and timecode, with Ultimate extending that to 64 tracks and video editing.
Con: Intro's 8-track caps and Artist's 32 audio-track limit can constrain projects as they grow.
Con: Full audio-post workflows and the largest video capacity require the $99.00 USD per month Ultimate subscription.
Con: Installation and activation require internet access, and the minimum RAM requirement is 16 GB.

Alternatives

For another workstation with a free plan on macOS and Windows, compare Reason; its Reason+ plan includes the latest DAW version, Reason Rack and sound packs. If broad platform coverage and a one-time purchase are more important than Pro Tools' audio-post tiers, DefleMask is a freemium option, though its free Legacy edition is unsupported and described as a demo. Bitwig Studio is worth considering if Linux support is essential and a paid DAW with a free trial fits; its Essentials plan includes 51 instruments and audio and note effects, with unlimited audio, instrument and hybrid tracks and scenes.

For Apple users who want a free option, GarageBand runs on macOS and iOS and supports up to 255 tracks on Mac. Ardour is another freemium choice with Linux support. If chiptune tracking is the priority, Furnace is a free option. Logic Pro is an alternative for users considering Apple's creative software subscriptions. For a modular synthesizer and tracker, consider SunVox.

Verdict

Choose Pro Tools if your work needs its combination of detailed audio production and mixing, especially when Studio or Ultimate's video and timecode features matter. Its generous upper-tier capacity is the main reason to choose it; the monthly cost of Ultimate and the tight limits on cheaper plans are the reasons to look elsewhere if your sessions are smaller or your work does not involve audio post.
