Overview

LinkShare connects advertisers with publishers and helps brands build customer-acquisition partnerships. Rakuten Advertising says its network includes more than 150,000 top-tier partners, with launch taking less than one month. That breadth is useful for teams seeking scale, although a large network still requires deliberate partner selection and program management.

Publisher membership is open to legal entities and individuals aged 18 or older, and use is for business purposes. Publishers can promote offers through websites, social media, video, podcasts, mobile applications, email and other digital media, subject to each advertiser program’s terms and policies.

Key features

Advertiser campaign controls

Advertisers get partner recommendations, campaign planning, custom promotions, commission rules and campaign-performance reports. These controls suit organizations that need to coordinate multiple offers and publisher relationships rather than run a single informal referral arrangement.

AI-assisted partner discovery

Partnership Discovery uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to recommend publishers from product categories and plain-language search queries. It gives a marketing team a focused way to find prospective partners without relying solely on manual browsing. Recommendations are a starting point, so suitability still depends on each publisher and campaign.

Attribution and commissioning

Advertisers can select first-touch, last-touch and other attribution and commissioning models. That flexibility lets a program reflect how it values discovery and conversion, but it also means the commission rules need to be understood by every participating publisher.

Audience activation

Audience Engine lets brands use existing data with partners to segment audiences, target advertising and personalize ads and offers. It is most relevant to marketers with audience data and a need to coordinate partner-led messaging, rather than businesses looking only for basic link tracking.

Tracking, privacy and support

Publisher promotional links must use Rakuten Advertising designated tracking links beginning with click.linksynergy. Transactions without those links may be treated as invalid and commissions can be denied, making implementation discipline essential. The publisher agreement addresses California privacy law, GDPR and other regional requirements, including consent, notice and opt-out duties. Advertisers can contact support by email or telephone; publisher support is available by email. Fraud prevention and API access are provided, and the service offers a partner portal with multi-touch attribution.

Pricing

Advertiser pricing is on request, so businesses should expect a custom commercial discussion rather than a published tier comparison. That approach can fit organizations whose network scope and campaign needs vary, but it makes budgeting and direct price comparison harder.

Publisher Network Access

Free. Publisher network access is free unless fees are separately designated in writing. Inactivity fees may apply after 12 consecutive months without commissionable activity. This is a sensible entry point for eligible publishers testing advertiser programs, but dormant accounts should not be treated as permanently cost-free.

Publishers also need to account for the tracking-link requirement and the agreement’s privacy obligations. Those are operating conditions, not optional add-ons, and failures can affect commission eligibility.

Platforms

LinkShare supports Android, iOS and web access, alongside an API. That combination covers browser-based program work, mobile-oriented operations and integrations into a brand’s existing systems.

Who it's for

LinkShare is a strong fit for brands and advertisers that want a broad publisher pool, AI-guided prospecting, configurable commissions and audience-based partner campaigns. Agencies can use the campaign and reporting controls when managing programs for multiple clients. Publishers, creators and influencers should consider it when they can operate as a business, meet program policies and implement the required tracking links.

It is less suitable for a small operator seeking a fully transparent self-serve price, or for a publisher unable to monitor inactivity, tracking and regional privacy requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros

Large stated network: More than 150,000 top-tier partners gives advertisers substantial scope for publisher recruitment.
Guided discovery: AI and natural-language search can narrow partner prospecting by category and product context.
Flexible measurement: First-touch, last-touch and other attribution choices support different commissioning strategies.
Audience Engine: Existing brand data can inform partner segmentation, targeting and personalized offers.
Integration coverage: API access, a partner portal and Android, iOS and web support accommodate varied operating setups.

Cons

Custom advertiser pricing: A price-on-request model makes upfront cost comparison difficult.
Strict link compliance: Non-designated promotional links can invalidate transactions and deny commissions.
Inactivity exposure: Publishers may incur fees after 12 months without commissionable activity.
Privacy administration: Consent, notice and opt-out duties under regional laws add compliance work for publishers.

Verdict

Rakuten LinkShare is recommended for established brands and agencies that value a large partner network, AI-assisted discovery, configurable attribution and audience activation. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of reach and campaign controls. Look elsewhere if transparent subscription pricing, minimal publisher compliance or a simple self-serve setup matters more than network scale.
