Overview

RawTherapee develops raw files from a broad range of digital cameras, including HDR DNG, and can also process JPEG, TIFF, and PNG images. Its non-destructive, 32-bit floating-point engine lets photographers refine an image without altering the original file, a useful basis for revisiting processing decisions.

Founded in 2004, the project releases RawTherapee as libre software under the GNU General Public License version 3. The combination of broad camera support and detailed development makes it a capable focused editor, but its scope matters: photographers who need asset management, printing, or uploading will need other tools for those jobs.

Key features

Raw development and masking

Multiple demosaicing algorithms and extensive development controls give users meaningful influence over how raw data becomes an image. That suits photographers who want to shape rendering rather than rely on a narrow set of automatic choices; newcomers should expect to spend time learning the controls. Masking tools are available, but layer editing is not, so it is not a substitute for a layer-based compositing editor.

Batch work and external editing

Batch processing and copying or pasting editing parameters across files reduce repeated work when developing a set of images. A command-line option also serves users who want to incorporate processing into command-driven workflows. For further editing, RawTherapee can send a processed image to GIMP or another editor in one click; it can also open raw images from GIMP as a plugin and return the edited image to GIMP.

RawPedia documentation and a community forum are the project’s support channels. They provide reference and peer help, while users who prefer a dedicated support service should account for that community-oriented model.

Pricing

Free: 0.00 USD per free. RawTherapee includes raw development and batch processing under the GPLv3 license, with no paid tier to unlock. The trade-off is functional rather than financial: it has no digital asset management, printing, or uploading features.

Platforms

RawTherapee is desktop software for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Version 5.13 was released on July 26, 2026. Its macOS 5.13 build requires macOS Tahoe 26.0 or newer on Apple Silicon, or macOS Monterey 12.0 or newer on Intel. On macOS it must be installed in /Applications; it refuses to start from another location.

Who it's for

RawTherapee fits enthusiast newcomers willing to learn detailed controls and professional photographers who want a dedicated raw-development stage in a broader workflow. Batch tools are particularly useful when similar processing needs to be applied across multiple files. It is a weaker fit for anyone who expects one application to organize a collection, prepare prints, or upload finished work.

Pros and cons

Pros: No-cost GPLv3 software runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, with broad raw-camera support and JPEG, TIFF, and PNG processing.
Pros: Non-destructive 32-bit floating-point processing, multiple demosaicing algorithms, masking, and batch parameter copying support careful, repeatable development.
Pros: Command-line use and GIMP integration give it options for fitting into a wider editing workflow.
Cons: No asset management, printing, or uploading means it cannot cover the full photo workflow on its own.
Cons: No layer editing limits its role when an image needs layer-based work.
Cons: macOS installation has a strict /Applications requirement, and the current build has different minimum macOS versions for Apple Silicon and Intel.

Alternatives

darktable is another free, GPL-licensed raw developer for Linux, macOS, and Windows; choose between these two based on which workflow and controls suit you, since both are no-cost cross-platform options.

vkdt is a free, open-source photography workflow toolbox for Linux, macOS, and Windows, worth considering if that toolbox approach better matches your workflow.

Hasselblad Phocus is a free RAW-processing download for PC and Mac, an option for readers seeking a free processor on those platforms.

Nikon NX Studio is free desktop software for macOS and Windows; Nikon camera and file-format support varies, so it is an alternative for users whose files it supports.

ON1 Portrait AI, RAW Power, Corel AfterShot Pro, and DxO PureRAW are other alternatives; choose among them if their respective tools better suit your needs.

Verdict

Choose RawTherapee if you want a free, cross-platform raw developer with detailed processing controls and useful batch tools. Its focused scope and lack of asset management, printing, and uploading are the main reasons to look elsewhere or pair it with other software.
