Overview

Retool brings app building, workflow automation and data connections into one product, with deployment in Retool’s cloud or a customer’s own infrastructure. Its AI-native builder produces a working app from a description that users can refine, a useful starting point when standard software does not fit a team’s process.

The platform reaches beyond browser-based tools: teams can build native iOS and Android apps or progressive web apps, and use workflows for scheduled or webhook-triggered tasks. That range is most valuable to teams able to define and maintain their own applications. Retool is less compelling for buyers who need a fixed, ready-made product rather than tools to build with.

Key features

AI-assisted app building: A written description can generate a working app to refine. This accelerates the initial build, but the generated app is a starting point rather than a substitute for shaping it to the task.
Mobile capabilities: Native apps and progressive web apps extend Retool beyond desktop workflows. Mobile apps can take photos, scan barcodes, capture signatures and read NFC tags, which suits operational work involving those inputs.
Workflow automation: Scheduled and webhook triggers, custom error handling and automatic retries cover both routine runs and failure handling. These controls matter for teams relying on automations as part of an operating process.
Data connections: Connections include REST API, Google Sheets, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Firebase, GraphQL, Snowflake, Salesforce and Slack. Retool says queries run against customers’ own data sources and that it does not store their data, a useful fit for teams building on existing systems.
Deployment and controls: Retool runs in its cloud or can be self-hosted in a customer’s VPC, with Docker setup. Role-based access controls, audit logging, SSO and independent workspaces address access and oversight needs; the product’s self-hosting option gives teams control over where it runs.
AI usage: Credits are pooled across the account, renew monthly and do not roll over; paid plans can add credit packs. AI agents are billed hourly and do not use that pool, so teams should distinguish agent costs from credit allowances.

Pricing

Retool is freemium, with a Free plan and paid plans. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and supports up to five users. It is a reasonable way for a small team to start, but teams above that cap need Team or a higher plan.

Team is 10.00 USD per month, billed at $10/mo per builder and $5/mo per internal user. It adds users beyond Free’s five-user limit, 5,000 workflow runs/month, a staging resource environment, app release versions, additional agent hours and 1,000 AI credits/month. This is the entry paid tier for teams that need more seats and a defined workflow allowance; the separate builder and internal-user rates make the user mix relevant to the bill.

Business is 50.00 USD per month, billed at $50/mo per builder and $15/mo per internal user. It includes audit logging, rich permission controls, portals and embedded apps, unlimited resource environments, unlimited modules and 3,000 AI credits/month. It suits teams that need stronger permissions or embedded experiences, but its per-user rates are higher than Team’s.

Enterprise has custom pricing. Technical support from Retool’s Support Engineering team is an Enterprise feature. The Free plan is capped at five users, and Team and Business carry different builder and internal-user rates; compare the seat mix as well as the plan’s features. AI credits renew monthly without rollover, while agent hours are billed separately.

Platforms

Retool supports web, iOS and Android, and offers API and self-hosted options. It includes database and backend capabilities, custom domains, and both cloud and self-hosted deployment. The mobile options are particularly relevant for teams whose tools need device inputs; self-hosting is suited to organizations that want deployment in their own VPC.

Who it's for

Retool identifies developers, business engineers, analysts and operations teams as builders. It is a strong candidate when those teams need custom apps over their own data, automation alongside those apps, or mobile tools that use device features. Teams without capacity to build and refine their own software, or with more than five prospective users but no paid-plan budget, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Apps, workflows and data integrations sit in one platform, reducing the need to split a custom internal tool across separate products.
Pro: Native mobile apps can use photo, barcode, signature and NFC inputs, which supports work that a web-only builder would not cover in the same way.
Pro: Cloud and VPC self-hosting options give teams a choice about deployment location.
Con: Free is limited to five users, so it does not cover a larger team without moving to a paid plan.
Con: Team and Business charge builders and internal users at different rates, so costs depend on the team's role mix.
Con: Monthly AI credits do not roll over, and agents are billed hourly outside the credit pool, making usage budgeting a separate consideration.

Alternatives

UI Bakery is another freemium option with a free plan and web, Linux, Windows and self-hosted platforms; consider it if those platform options better match your environment.

Claris FileMaker is a paid alternative with a free trial and support for Android, iOS, web, desktop and self-hosted platforms; it may suit buyers seeking that broader platform mix.

Noloco has a free tier with unlimited team seats, 50 active clients, 2,000 records and 30 AI credits per month. It is worth comparing when those seat and record allowances fit the intended use better than Retool’s five-user Free cap.

ToolJet offers a free cloud plan for two builders and 50 end users, with two apps and 100 AI credits/month. Consider it when those free-tier limits suit a smaller app-building setup.

Windmill has a free and open-source plan with three workspaces, 50 users and 10 GiB of workspace object storage, making it an option to compare for teams interested in those allowances.

Budibase is a freemium alternative with a Pro plan at 19.00 USD per month, including one creator, one workspace and 2K Budibase AI credits.

Jet Admin has a free plan with 1 GB storage and a Pro plan at 20.00 USD per month; compare it if those storage and plan terms suit your needs.

Appsmith offers a free plan for up to five cloud users, with five workspaces, three Git repos, Google SSO, three standard roles, public apps and community support. It is a relevant comparison for teams whose requirements fit those cloud-plan limits.

Verdict

Choose Retool if your developers or operations team needs to build custom apps and automations on existing business data, especially when native mobile capabilities or self-hosting matter. Its main advantage is the breadth of app, workflow and deployment options in one platform. Look elsewhere if the five-user Free cap is too restrictive, per-role paid pricing does not fit your seat mix, or your team wants ready-made software rather than a platform to build on.
