Overview

Merchants can offer recurring subscriptions with automatic charges or recurring invoices, and set custom billing intervals or prepaid plans. That range suits different collection workflows, though stores should choose the billing mode that matches how they want renewals handled.

Customers can view, edit, pause, skip, or cancel subscriptions through a portal reached by magic link or Shopify account login. This gives subscribers a direct way to manage routine changes, while subscription discounts—including tiered and loyalty discounts—give merchants options for shaping recurring offers.

Key features

Payment and inventory management

Analytics and a payment calendar cover upcoming, skipped, failed, completed, pending, and scheduled payments. Payment recovery is supported, but merchants still need to attend to failed or pending payments rather than treating the calendar as a substitute for payment operations.

Inventory forecasting and the ability to skip renewals when a product is out of stock can help prevent subscription orders from colliding with stock shortages. Integrations include Bundler, Klaviyo, PageFly, Gempages, and Google Analytics.

API and data handling

The Merchant API lets merchants retrieve subscription details, update subscriptions, and create webhooks, useful for stores connecting subscription activity to their own workflows. Sensitive customer data is encrypted in the database using AES algorithms, with access restricted. Collected data is stored on secure servers in Toronto, Canada; personal data is deleted seven days after a merchant stops using the service and uninstalls the app unless retained longer for business purposes.

Pricing

Seal Subscriptions has a free plan and six monthly paid tiers, each with a 30-day free trial and 0% transaction fee. The free plan has a cap of 50 total subscriptions, making it a sensible starting point for a smaller store, but not a fit once that ceiling is exceeded.

Plan	Price	Subscription cap	Best fit
FREE	Custom pricing	50 total subscriptions	Stores starting with a small subscriber base
SUPERSALE	5.95 USD per month, billed MONTHLY	100 total subscriptions	Small paid deployments
RISING STAR	9.95 USD per month, billed MONTHLY	250 total subscriptions	Stores growing beyond the free cap
LEGEND	24.95 USD per month, billed MONTHLY	500 total subscriptions	Mid-sized subscriber bases
LEADER	89.95 USD per month, billed MONTHLY	2000 total subscriptions	Stores with substantially more subscribers
MEGA STAR	199.00 USD per month, billed MONTHLY	50000 total subscriptions	High-volume stores
SUPERSTAR	399.00 USD per month, billed MONTHLY	150000 total subscriptions	Stores with very large subscriber bases

The paid plans keep transaction fees at 0%, but their subscription limits rise in distinct steps. A store should compare its expected subscriber count with the next cap before choosing a tier; the lower-priced plans give up capacity, not the stated transaction-fee rate. Support tiers provide regular or priority support, with priority and phone support on MEGA STAR.

Platforms

Seal Subscriptions runs on web and offers an API. It is a Shopify app, so its fit is strongest for merchants operating a Shopify store rather than businesses seeking a standalone subscription platform.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for Shopify merchants who want customers to handle subscription changes themselves and need visibility into payment status and stock-related renewal decisions. Stores with a small subscriber base can start within the free plan's 50-subscription limit, while larger operations can move through paid caps up to 150000 total subscriptions. It is less compelling for merchants whose volume sits awkwardly between tiers or who need a platform beyond Shopify.

Pros and cons

Pros: Automatic charging and recurring invoices, custom intervals, and prepaid plans give merchants several ways to structure recurring sales.
Pros: A customer portal, payment calendar, payment recovery, and inventory controls cover both subscriber changes and recurring-order operations.
Pros: Paid tiers have a 0% transaction fee, and the Merchant API supports subscription retrieval, updates, and webhooks.
Cons: The free plan stops at 50 total subscriptions, and the paid plans use stepped caps that may force a higher tier as a store grows.
Cons: Personal data may be retained beyond seven days after uninstall when business purposes require it.

Alternatives

PayWhirl is another freemium option with a free plan and trial, but its Starter plan has a 3.0% per-transaction fee, with payment gateway processing fees also applying. Appstle Subscriptions may suit merchants who value a free tier capped by subscription revenue rather than a stated count: its Free plan covers up to $500 in subscriptions per month and includes pay-as-you-go and prepaid subscriptions with 24/7 human support.

Loop Subscriptions offers a free plan with 50 active subscriptions, a mobile-friendly customer portal, subscription alerts, and growth and revenue analytics. Recurpay is worth considering for development stores, which get a free plan with 0% transaction fees, analytics, a customer portal, and automatic payment recovery.

Subi Subscriptions is another alternative. RecurrinGO! is another alternative. Subbly may fit merchants looking for an alternative with a paid Lite plan at 19.00 USD per month and a 2% + $0.19 per transaction fee. Subscribie may appeal to users who want open-source software they can host themselves if they have the skills.

Verdict

Seal Subscriptions is a good choice for Shopify merchants who want customer-managed subscriptions, flexible recurring billing, and practical payment and inventory oversight without a transaction fee on the stated plans. Choose it when its subscription caps match your scale; look elsewhere if you need a non-Shopify platform or your growth would push you into a tier whose capacity you do not need.
