Overview

SketchUp’s range makes it possible to start with browser-based modeling and step up to desktop design or tools for scanning, construction, and visualization. Millions of pre-built models and materials in 3D Warehouse, alongside more than 600 Extension Warehouse extensions, broaden the work the core application can support. The catch is choosing the right tier: Free is noncommercial, and specialist features are split across plans, with some restricted to Windows.

SketchUp is part of Trimble, which was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Westminster, Colorado. Trimble says more than one million industry professionals use SketchUp.

Key features

Modeling and visualization: SketchUp supports parametric modeling and animation tools, with render-engine options. Studio adds photorealistic visuals, rendered animations, and 360-degree panoramas, but those advanced visualization workflows are Windows-only.
Models and extensions: 3D Warehouse’s large library of ready-made models and materials can speed up project work; Extension Warehouse’s more than 600 extensions can automate workflows or add functionality. That reach is useful, though the plan determines whether Extension Warehouse access is included.
Collaboration and administration: Users can share securely, view and comment in real time, and collaborate through Trimble Connect. Go includes unlimited cloud storage. Team administrators can manage users and licenses, while large teams can use volume pricing, SSO/Federation, and standardized renewals.
Learning and support: Free self-paced training through SketchUp Campus, YouTube, and a community forum offer ways to build skills. English support runs Monday to Friday, 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT; German and French support runs 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. MT.

Pricing

SketchUp is freemium. Its free browser plan is a useful way to begin, but it is not for commercial use. Paid plans are quoted per user per month with annual billing; subscriptions generally auto-renew for an equal term. Annual purchases can be refunded within 14 days, and monthly plans within 7 days of initial purchase. A 7-day trial is offered.

Free — 0.00 USD per free: Browser-based SketchUp for Web, Trimble Connect cloud storage, and 3D Warehouse access. It is suitable for personal or noncommercial learning, not paid work.
Go Annual — 10.75 USD per month (billed annually): SketchUp for Web and iPad, unlimited cloud storage, and Photoreal Materials. This is the lower-cost paid option for essential 3D design when web and iPad are enough; it gives up desktop modeling and LayOut documentation.
Pro Annual — 33.25 USD per month (billed annually): Desktop 3D modeling, LayOut 2D documentation, PreDesign, and Extension Warehouse access. It is the practical step up for professional design needing desktop tools and documentation.
Studio Annual — 71.58 USD per month (billed annually): Revit importer, point-cloud modeling, photorealistic visuals, rendered animations, and 360-degree panoramas for advanced visualization and BIM workflows. Its Windows-only limit rules it out for teams that need those workflows on other platforms.
Pro Scan Annual — 41.58 USD per month (billed annually): Scan Essentials and point-cloud import for a Windows-only scan-to-3D workflow.
Pro Civil Contractor Annual — 41.58 USD per month (billed annually): 3D-to-field workflows, Trimble Site Contractor integration, and field-data import for stakeout and excavation work.
Pro Advanced Workflows Annual — 49.92 USD per month (billed annually): Scan Essentials and Revit importer for interoperable workflows; this plan is Windows-only.

Education users have a separate free SketchUp for Schools option with an eligible Google Workspace for Education or Microsoft Education account. It runs on Chromebooks or any internet-connected computer and includes lesson plans, 3D printing, community support, and Google Drive or OneDrive cloud storage.

Platforms

SketchUp runs on iOS, the web, and Windows, with plan differences that matter more than the broad platform list. Go is web and iPad only, while Studio, Pro Scan, and Pro Advanced Workflows include Windows-only workflows. Check platform fit before committing if your work depends on advanced visualization, scanning, or interoperability.

Who it's for

SketchUp suits designers, educators, and professionals who want 3D modeling with a path into documentation, visualization, or construction-oriented workflows. Free works for noncommercial exploration; Go fits web-and-iPad design; Pro is the stronger choice for desktop design and 2D documentation. Teams benefit from collaboration and administrative tools, while education users with qualifying accounts can use the Schools plan without a subscription.

It is a weaker fit for commercial users who need desktop tools at no cost, or for teams whose required advanced workflows must run outside Windows.

Pros and cons

Pro: A free web plan and a low-cost paid web-and-iPad tier make it possible to start without buying desktop software.
Pro: 3D Warehouse, extensive extensions, and Trimble Connect collaboration support work beyond basic modeling.
Pro: The specialized plans address scanning, construction fieldwork, and visualization rather than forcing every professional workflow into one tier.
Con: The free plan is not for commercial use, so paid work requires a subscription.
Con: Advanced visualization and several specialist workflows are Windows-only, narrowing their usefulness for mixed-platform teams.
Con: The gap between Go and Pro is substantial: desktop modeling, LayOut, PreDesign, and Extension Warehouse access begin at the higher-priced Pro tier.

Alternatives

Compare 3D modeling software if you want to weigh more tools in the category. Consider Houdini for its freemium model and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Rhino 3D is another option, with Windows and macOS support and a permanent commercial license. Choose Blender if free, open-source software that works offline matters more than SketchUp’s plan structure. Onshape is worth considering for browser and mobile access, though its free plan is noncommercial and makes all documents public. Shapr3D offers a free tier limited to two projects, with paid Pro available annually. Spline has a free tier with limited personal files and watermarked web exports. SelfCAD offers free basic 3D modeling with limited tools. Creo is a paid alternative with a floating-license option.

Verdict

Choose SketchUp if you want a flexible 3D modeling tool that can grow from web or iPad design into desktop documentation, collaboration, or specialized workflows. Its model library, extensions, and range of plans are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if commercial work must remain free, or if your essential advanced workflows need to run beyond Windows.
