Overview

Typecast turns text into expressive, context-aware speech. The Studio is built for making and refining voiceovers, while the API serves content automation, app services, and conversational agents. Voice cloning and commercial use are supported, though API free-plan audio is noncommercial and requires attribution.

Key features

Studio voice generation

The Studio advertises more than 700 AI voices, with controls for emotion, speed, and dynamics. Generation and playback are unlimited across Studio plans, so creators can iterate without spending credits on previews. Downloads do consume credits, however, making the allowance—not the ability to generate—the practical ceiling on finished output. The free Studio plan provides 3,000 lifetime download credits, roughly five minutes, trial voices, three projects, 1 GB of storage, and requires attribution. That is enough to evaluate the workflow, not to support regular publishing.

API and integrations

The API is intended for creator narration, audiobooks, podcasts, conversational agents, AI tutors, and AICC. Its stated streaming TTS latency is 170–210 ms, a relevant consideration for interactive speech. SDKs and integrations include Python, JavaScript, Zapier, Google Sheets, n8n, and Make. The API supports automation, but it is a distinct plan track with its own monthly quota, concurrency limits, and commercial-use terms.

Formats and security

Generated audio formats are MP3 and WAV. SSML is not supported, which may rule Typecast out for workflows that rely on SSML markup. The privacy policy describes access controls, encryption of unique identifying information, security software, physical access controls, and breach-notification procedures.

Pricing

Typecast is freemium, with Studio and API plans priced separately. Studio generation and playback remain unlimited, but downloads spend credits.

Free (Studio): Free; 3,000 lifetime download credits (about five minutes), trial voices only, three projects, 1 GB media storage, and attribution required. This is an evaluation tier, not a recurring production allowance.
Basic: 5.00 USD per month; 30,000 credits/month, one voice-cloning slot, 5 GB storage, and 1080p video exports. It is the lowest-cost paid Studio option for modest output.
Plus: 19.00 USD per month; 40,000 credits/month, one voice-cloning slot, 30 GB storage, and 4K exports. It mainly adds storage and resolution over Basic, with a smaller increase in credits.
Pro: 29.00 USD per month; 75,000 credits/month, two voice-cloning slots, 50 GB storage, and 4K exports. This better fits heavier download needs or a second cloned voice.
Business: 69.00 USD per month; 200,000 credits/month, ten voice-cloning slots, 100 GB storage, and 4K exports. The higher quota and cloning capacity suit larger production needs.

The Studio plan details give no seat counts, so teams should confirm whether the account arrangement fits before choosing a tier. The free API plan includes 15k credits/month and concurrency limit 2, but audio is noncommercial and attribution is required. That makes it unsuitable for a commercial service despite its recurring quota. Lite (API) costs 15.00 USD per month for 200k credits/month, with $0.075 per 1k credits, overage at $0.09 per 1k credits, concurrency limit 5, and 50 custom voice slots. It is the clearer fit for a developer needing paid API access and a defined usage allowance; the overage rate matters if demand exceeds quota. Support handles additional pricing and product questions, and enterprise inquiries are offered.

Platforms

Typecast is available on web, iOS, and Android, with device syncing for its mobile app. Developers can also use the API. The combination supports Studio work across mobile and web alongside programmatic speech generation.

Who it's for

Choose Typecast if you need a large expressive voice selection for narration, or an API with named integration options for automated and conversational speech. It is less suitable if your project depends on SSML, if you need substantial free Studio downloads, or if the API free plan's commercial restriction conflicts with deployment. Its separate Studio and API quotas also mean buyers should match the plan to the way audio will actually be produced.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 700 advertised voices and controls for emotion, speed, and dynamics give narration room for deliberate delivery choices.
Pro: Unlimited Studio generation and playback make script iteration practical before committing credits to downloads.
Pro: Python, JavaScript, Zapier, Google Sheets, n8n, and Make integrations give developers and automation users several routes into the API.
Con: The free Studio allowance is only 3,000 lifetime download credits, about five minutes, and uses trial voices with attribution required.
Con: Free API audio cannot be used commercially and requires attribution; commercial developers need a paid API plan.
Con: No SSML support limits workflows that need markup-based speech control.

Alternatives

For a different route to text-to-speech, compare Text-to-speech tools and AI voice generators.

Google Cloud Text-to-Speech is worth considering when character-based API pricing suits the workload: Standard voices have 0 to 4 million characters free, then cost US$0.000004 per character (US$4 per 1 million characters).
Voicebox is an alternative with Android, iOS, API, desktop, Linux, and self-hosted platforms; its maintainer describes it as a spare-time side project.
Fish Audio may suit users seeking a free tier with 8,000 monthly credits and up to seven minutes of generation, though each generation is capped at 500 characters.
NaturalReader is an option for readers who want a freemium service across mobile, desktop, browser extension, and web.
Speechify offers a free plan with 10 voices and a maximum speed of 1.5x, making it an alternative for those limits.
Altered Studio has a free tier with three minutes/month of Voice Morphing, 10,000 AI Tokens, local voice cloning, and noncommercial attribution licensing.
LOVO AI offers a free plan with limited features and five projects; its Pro+ tier includes 20 voice generation hours/month and unlimited projects, with custom pricing.
TTSReader is another freemium option with Android, iOS, web, desktop, and API platforms.

Verdict

Typecast is a strong fit for creators who want expressive, adjustable narration and developers who need an API with automation integrations. Its main advantage is the combination of a broad Studio voice library and a separate API; its main reason to look elsewhere is the credit cost of Studio downloads, alongside a free API tier that cannot be used commercially.
