Overview

VMware Workstation Pro is a desktop hypervisor for running virtual machines, containers, and Kubernetes clusters on a local computer. It is best suited to developers, IT professionals, students, and enthusiasts who need configurable environments for development, testing, or learning. Its strongest case is broad local virtualization without a subscription; the trade-off is that free users rely on community and self-service support.

Key features

Workstation assigns virtual CPU, memory, and storage to each VM, allowing one physical machine to run multiple operating systems. Snapshots provide useful rollback points when changes go wrong, while nested virtualization and GPU acceleration extend the workloads it can support. Advanced networking and custom VM configurations suit users who want control over their environments, rather than a managed service.

Encryption, virtual TPM, and UEFI Secure Boot give VMs several security options. Workstation can also connect to remote vSphere or ESX servers to manage VMs and physical hosts, and migrate local VMs to a private cloud. That makes it a more natural fit for VMware environments than for someone who only needs an isolated desktop VM.

Workstation Pro 26H1 for Windows is a 64-bit application and adds remote connectivity to ARM-based ESXi servers. Broadcom says product updates and security patches will continue.

Pricing

Workstation Pro costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan covers personal, educational, and commercial use on 64-bit Intel or AMD (x86/x86-64) PCs with Windows or Linux hosts. It requires no subscription or license key, so it suits individuals and organizations that need local virtualization without a recurring license charge.

There is no free trial because the product is free. The key limitation is support: users are not entitled to Broadcom Global Support Team assistance and instead rely on community forums and self-service resources.

Platforms

Workstation Pro runs on Windows and Linux hosts and supports x86_64 guest architecture. The desktop management interface is suited to working directly on a host computer. Workstation Pro 26H1 for Windows is a 64-bit release, and its new remote connectivity targets ARM-based ESXi servers.

Who it's for

Choose Workstation Pro if you need local VMs for development, testing, or learning, or want to run containers and Kubernetes clusters alongside them. Its snapshots, security options, custom networking, and nested virtualization are valuable for users who need to create and reset varied environments. It is less suitable when access to vendor support is a requirement.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free for personal, educational, and commercial use, with no subscription or license key required.
Pro: Snapshots, nested virtualization, GPU acceleration, and configurable networking support varied local workloads.
Pro: Encryption, virtual TPM, and UEFI Secure Boot provide security controls for VMs.
Pro: Remote vSphere or ESX management and local-VM migration offer a path into VMware private-cloud workflows.
Con: Free users do not receive Broadcom Global Support Team support and must use forums and self-service resources.
Con: The free plan is for 64-bit Intel or AMD PCs running Windows or Linux hosts, so it does not cover other host platforms.

Alternatives

For container networking rather than desktop virtualization, Canal is a free Apache-2.0 open-source project available on Linux, macOS, and self-hosted platforms. Calico Open Source is another free option, with community-driven support and maintenance, in-memory data retention, and unlimited clusters.

kube-network-policies is a free Kubernetes network-policy implementation installable with raw manifests or Helm. Liqo and OVN-Kubernetes are also free alternatives. Aviatrix Kubernetes Firewall is a paid product with a 30-day free trial. For reference and example CNI network plugins under an Apache-2.0 license, consider CNI Plugins; DANM is a free Kubernetes network-management option.

Verdict

Workstation Pro is the right choice for developers, IT professionals, students, and enthusiasts who want capable local virtualization at no charge, especially when snapshots, security options, or VMware server integration matter. Look elsewhere if vendor-backed support is essential, or if your work calls for container-networking software rather than a desktop hypervisor.
