An AI cover is not automatically cleared just because a tool can generate it or a plan includes a commercial license. Before making or sharing one, check the permissions for the song, any source recording, and the voice you are imitating; then check the generator’s terms and the destination platform’s rules. If you cannot establish the needed permissions, use a voice you are authorized to use and material whose rights you have checked, or keep the experiment private while you resolve the questions.
Which Rights Questions Apply To An AI Cover?
A cover keeps a song’s underlying composition, such as its melody and lyrics, while changing its performance or arrangement. An AI voice conversion may also use an existing recording as its input. Those are distinct materials to check: permission to use a voice model does not by itself establish permission to use a song or recording, and a generator’s commercial-use term does not answer every rights question about the input.

- The recording: If you upload a released track or other recorded performance, check whether you are allowed to use that recording as input. Using a different recording does not resolve questions about the underlying song.
- The voice: Use a voice you control or have authorization to imitate. Do not present an imitation as a real artist’s authorized performance if it is not.
- The service and destination: Read the generator’s current terms and the destination platform’s rules. A service’s permission for a particular use does not necessarily clear the other materials involved.

A prompt can set musical direction, but it cannot grant rights or create consent. Keep the request focused on the musical qualities you want, and name a real person’s voice only when you have authorization for that use. For example:

- Unclear rights: Do not upload the recording or identify a real singer as the target. First find a permitted source and settle the rights and consent questions.

What Do Streaming Platform Rules Add?
Platform policies can impose additional limits and may change. Spotify announced on September 25, 2025 that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it. The announcement also described a music spam filter for mass uploads and duplicates, and support for DDEX AI disclosures in credits. Music Business Worldwide’s report on Spotify’s policy announcement covers those points.
On August 11, 2026, Spotify announced an “AI Persona” badge to label artist identities that may be AI-generated rather than a real person. Spotify’s announcement describes that transparency measure. A badge or disclosure does not itself establish permission to use a song, recording, or voice; check the current platform rules for the release you are considering.

- The voice owner has authorized the imitation and use, where the voice is identifiable as theirs.
